As the head of language research, training and testing for EF Education First -- the world's largest language school -- Dr. Christopher McCormick oversees the instructional design and delivery of EF's language programs. His work focuses on online language learning, educational mobile applications, and digital media for accelerated language learning. His language abilities span English, Spanish and Russian, amongst others. Dr. McCormick holds a B.A. with honors in French and Russian from Tulane University, and a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin.
TEDxPhnomPenh was held at Pannasastra University on June 9, 2012.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDxevents are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

“The best aspect of language learning is it teaches you humility. Trying to be yourself in another language strips your personality down to its most basic elements. Languages are complicated and subtle. They are beautiful systems. Approaching a new one can seem to be an impossible task but it is good to do things that seem impossible” - Christopher McCormick

Wonderful talk. As an Iranian professional English teacher who speaks French fluently and has an excellent command of Arabic I strongly believe that learning foreign languages has broadened my mind and has changed my vision of the world and has made a strong version of me.

The more languages we know, the more opportunities we can discover the world. Languages are like magical strings to connect many people together. It's so appropriate to the sentence that "you speak the language he know, that goes to his head, but you speak his language, that goes to his heart". Thanks for this clip.

Once you know how to speak several languages, it just makes senses that it is so limited to have just one language. Because it does open your mind and help you to see the world in a different way. But, for most people it is a question of being scared to learn a new language... because like for all the rest, we are not equal when it comes to learn a new language. For some of us, it will come faster and others will need more time.... but in the end, people should just remember than anyone can learn a new language and it will definitely help him/her to see the world in a different manner, it will be good for his/her career and it might give this person the interest to learn another language and understand the world in a better manner.

Learning (learnt) english, german, esperanto, french, spanish, dutch and japanese. Plan on learning swedish and norwegian sometimes soon when I am better at japanese, dutch, spanish and french (my skills are currently still quite bad there. I will have to polish them first) Might learn hindi, arabic, portugese, korean or bengali someday when I'm satisfied with that. Languages are just the best! They just change your perspective on life and everything! I can't imagine being monolingual to be honest - which would also mean I couldn't understand any ted talks video now, because english wasn't my first, but my second language after all. Being monolingual for me would be like not being able to connect to the whole world. I couldn't even write this message here now or wouldn't know so many awesome people without language learning. So many experiences. It changed my life for good even though the effort is tremendous - but if I hadn't spent the time on so much language learning (and still do) I'd probably die full of regrets with things I always wanted to do or always wanted to learn, but never did, just because of laziness or whatever. Don't you be that person! Start living your dreams today instead of saying "someday I will do this or that..." Fight your laziness and just go for it and learn a language! ^-^

English is my first language. I'm learning Spanish, french, Russian, and Hebrew. When I was very young and could hold s very brief conversation in Japanese but once my friend who spoke Japanese moved I completely forgot how to speak it. What I do realize learning different languages is how long-winded and versatile it is.

I am an English learner from India. I would like to say that Learning a second language is not be hard. We can learn it like a mother tongue We have to listen and try to speak. If we told about vocabulary make sure you Note down the words whenever you see/hear new words, Learning a language is the process of consuming. I am also a Biginner in the English language. But it's working in my opinion.

you said "I've learned Japanese and French at the same time" where "I learned" would be more normal and "I ain't just love" but ain't means "are not/am not" "don't/ Do not" makes more sense "but I would also love to learn" there were a few other mistakes but not many but what you wrote was completely understandable and your grammar is perfect. just words choice for tense was not quite right

Thank you so much for your wonderful Ted Talk on learning languages. I nearly fell off my chair when you said your hometown was Ft Worth, as it is mine as well! I was a child of the 50's, and I so loved going to the FW library. It felt like church to me. Ive lived my entire life in TX, but FW is my favorite town. I just moved back last summer, & it's so good to be home! The only language classes I've ever taken were college Spanish. Unfortunately, I retained very little. I'm very motivated to learn French, as I want to go to Paris in 2020, and want to learn the language & more about French culture before I go. Which type of class would you recommend for a student in her upper 60's? Thank you so much! D

One language is a one minded approach. It isn't until you learn another language that you realize how messed up English is. We have so much freedom with it, you can express in a multitude of different ways and basically say the same thing. In Spanish, german and other more direct languages there is one way to say it. Given there are slangs or sayings that go with all languages but its no different then people up north in the USA to people down south. Same language just spoken differently. There are many dialects of Spanish that have indian words mixed in with them and only people in a certain area can speak it or understand that saying. Its how they can tell if your a foreigner or not, all in how you say "hello" or "thank you". Shei Shei

Amazing! Learning language isn't just plainly memorizing empty words for just pointless speaking. No! Learning language is discovering a brand new unexplored world with different and intriguing people. What they think? What are their values? What they like and what they don't? What is their culture and why? Learning language is a vividly human act of connecting fraternaly with our brothers and sisters separated by tongue. Adios, Auf wiedersehen, arriverderti, tchau and Good Bye.

Hi! So I can recomend you some youtube channels. For begginers try "Butterfly Spanish" and also spanish playground. They have short series called "Buena gente" where they talk slowly. If you like pidcasts try duolingo spanish podcast. (it is half in spanish half in english and stories are interesting) Do what best work for you. As long as you pay attention you learn. Good luck😊💜

I live in Indonesia. True that most people here don't speak English. And I'm curious about the result of that free tests you gave to people in under-developed countries. At what rank is Indonesia?

It's true, but Indonesians in the cities are more likely to understand/speak English, meanwhile those who lived in villages/ rural areas barely knows English. But I gotta say, Indonesians actually speaks way better English than Japanese (no hate intended)

mmm as a Spanish speaker, I think there are many Spanish speakers learning English so I don't really get his point.. to learn a language doesn't make you open minded or something like that... people who are learning English. They don't act like that, they still thinking in the same aspect, they just translate their beliefs to another language.. nothing will change...

He says quickly, but children from day one are listening for up to 2 years before they utter a word. Yes they are good at it, but not in the short term. Adults, short term, but timid But who am I as a humble internet user to oppose him

But children a little older than that learn a second language much more quickly. It seems like it helps to not be reading yet and not think in terms of "words".

The old European joke: What is a multilingual? someone who speaks many languages. What isa bilingual? someone who speaks two languages. What isa monolingual? an American !
@jayedavidson8414

Sure... But Europe has access to those languages. It is a rich person making fun of a middle class person for not having a not having a pool. It's blithe snobbiness while at the same time lacking the historical understanding of American unification.
