I started learning Japanese at 16 when I went on a summer exchange program to Tokyo, and 6 years later I have gone back for a year long college exchange program, graduated with my degree in Japanese, and am moving to Kyushu as an ALT :) Learning a second language has literally changed my life and I have met so many amazing people and learned so much about myself because of that decision I made 6 years ago! You had awesome advise in this video and I hope it inspires more people to pursue a second language :)))

For me routine is important! When I was in China, upon knowing my next job was going to be in Japan, I spent a few months studying through my phone in Starbucks of all places. I could call in, grab a coffee before work and break out the study. Now I'm actually in Japan...it's actually more difficult finding that good routine.

I've tried to learn many languages over the years and the main thing that i have a problem with is staying motivated, because it can sometimes feel like you're never going to reach a fluent level and you want to give up. Whenever I feel like this I always look over my past study notes to remind myself how far I've come. It always makes me feel good to look back on the days when I was learning how to count, or learning how to introduce myself, or learning the alphabet.
@xNagisaChan
@xNagisaChan 8 жыл бұрын
It is really hard to become fluent in a language if you don't actually live in a country where said language is spoken often. It is the repetition and daily use of a language that really helps you get fluent in it. The more you use it, be better it gets!

That is really not the case for everyone. I have had been introduced to English from a very young age and I have been learning it almost as long as I can remember. My sister was always better at it than I was, because she was bent on learning stuff. I got better at it than she is because I got interested in it, I watched a lot of movies, tv shows and our country never has anything dubbed to our language but subbed. The drive to learn something comes from you it is not so easy to learn something that you do not generally love or like.
@xNagisaChan
@xNagisaChan 8 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to say, but although you are easy to understand, you aren't "fluent" in at least typing English. You have a lot of spelling mistakes. (better at it THAN I, dubbed/subbed, almost, generally) I do agree that a big part of learning a language is the drive and curiosity to want to know more, but I must say from personal experience, no matter how "fluent" you are at a language, you'll notice how much you can actually improve when you live in a country that speaks that language, for a prolonged period of time. English isn't my native language either, and I thought I was fluent at it, until I moved to America. Now, I notice I still make silly rookie mistakes by literally translating stuff from my own language, among other things.

I am best at speaking not at writting. Because everything I writte I have to check twice or maybe even more. The problem is I see mistakes I make only when I finish writting. When I am in a hurry I do not check the grammer, I should change my approach to this problem by checking the spelling but I am lazy. Thank you for correcting me.

Learning Japanese has been one of the greatest decisions I ever made in my life. What started out as just a whim decision, has given me the chance to meet so make so many new friends, become best friends with the most amazing person in the world, countless new experiences, play video games and manga I would never be able to get otherwise, and the chance to live here. It really opens up your world to learn a new language. Definitely give it a shot, and try it for yourself!

Awesome advise! My husband and I took our two children to Japan last October, and we learned a decent amount of Japanese before the trip but dropped it right away when we got back to the USA. Well I decided I want to become more fluent so I have started speaking to our kids in Japanese whenever possible (while also studying more) and my husband, who just started learning Spanish is now speaking to them in Spanish. And we speak to one another in those languages as well, as much as we can. It's been amazing and I feel like I am learning it better because even though I am the only one speaking Japanese in the house, I am learning from myself, and my kids are learning through me. (And hubby)

I think that the most important thing to learn languages is to understand what you're learning is not a code but LANGUAGE, which is a communication tool for you and your friends. No matter what silly mistakes you make when you practice it, it is ok. Even native speakers don't speak theitr first language correctly. 開き直りが大事。

love the new camera quality! and great tips. my English boosted when I changed the language in every electronic device to English. watching tv series helped a lot too! now I'm doing the same thing with Japanese ^^ Oh the videogames tip doesn't work if you set japanese in non-JP games. The only thing that changes on the PS4 is system text (there's no japanese data in PAL/NTSC games). a notable exception is Pokemon on 3ds where you can choose 日本語 as the game language. I'm playing it right now and I'm checking every other word on Jisho.org (

i minor in Korean language, and its easy to work hard and study the writing and grammar, the only true struggle is speaking the language itself. practice makes perfect, its really hard when you don't have a native to practice the language with, but i'm still trying to familiarize myself more with conversational skills and the informal forms by watching more youtube videos.

Great video, Micaela! I'm learning Japanese, because, well, I was born in Japan, but adopted and moved to the U.S. as a baby. Eventually, I plan to move to Japan, so learning Japanese is a must for me. I also would like to connect with my heritage as well. Maybe after I'm confident enough in Japanese, I will take on learning Korean. But first, Japanese is my main priority. At the moment, I try to surround myself with Japanese. My iPhone is in Japanese, as well as the set language I have on KZfaq. I also listen to tons of Japanese music and I like to watch J-dramas and Anime. I also have a PS3 and Japanese Nintendo 3DS, both of which are set in Japanese. I'm graduating with my B.A. soon at my university, so hopefully soon, I hope to follow my dreams of moving to Japan, and truly surrounding myself in the language. For my up coming last semester at my university, I have really been thinking of enrolling myself in a Japanese language school, for just something to do in my spare time. I took 5 semesters (2 1/2 years) of Japanese language in college, so I do understand some Japanese. However, since my sensei spent most of the time on reading and writing, my reading and writing skills are better than my speaking skills.

Beautiful video I agree 100% only problem not a lot of people think the brain is a muscle and needs to practice everyday. Then the excuses come in etc. But to all the people who don't make excuses. This is really good advice, the whole changing your environment around you in that language you're learning is very helpful. Brings you to a realization that hey" this is a language people use everyday and I am becoming part of that" cheers to the language learners who actually put in the work.

Dont know if its just me, but now that I know Japanese to a decent extent and learning Korean, I find that I have a different perspective on languages. I find learning languages in general to be fun. I get really interested in just learning how to say hello or how a sentence is formed in a another language. And I think studying anime for vocabulary and new words is useful.

Embarrassingly I've been learning korean for about 8 years and I have nothing to show show it. Japanese, Chinese, and a few others are out there too. I just barely have time anymore (or don't make time).

Just find some mobile apps to learn languages, then everytime you need to wait for something or whatever, just whip out your phone and start learning on the go.. every little bit adds up, you don't really need a dedicated learning time if you can do it consistently.

When this vid started I could've sworn I'd seen it before, but it seems you only uploaded it today. Anyway, I'm moving to China (yes, China) in August to teach English in the hopes of (eventually) saving up enough money to move to Japan and enrol in a language school over there (probably KCP International). Here's hoping for the best ~

Right now, I am a French minor right now at my college and I am studying abroad in Paris next week. However, it is my third language and I speak English and Cantonese at home. The one thing I discovered was the grammar patterns that one can relate to. I know that Cantonese and French have different grammar differences, but sometimes, using the basic grammar structure was helping me in my French class in high school. Going on to the tv dramas that I have watched, I have watched Cantonese dramas with my family and it actually is a lot different from conversational speaking because people are reading from the written format, which is different. I sometimes find it a bit annoying and confusing since there is a reading - spoken way and a conversational - spoken way of Cantonese as I grew up and reading and writing Chinese is not my forte at all. I do agree on trying to at least put in some time each day on going over a few things that one had learned yesterday or on anything of the language that they are learning. I try to listen to my music or watch a news broad cast or even watch youtube clips of _______ Got Talent. I'll also try my best at speaking French to my professor so I can get a sense of speaking it more so I don't lose the touch of it at all.
