Hey Michael, I found you on tiktok a few months back and love your videos. They remind me of time with my grandpa and great aunties, and I really appreciate your perspective as another biracial ~30 yr old person! You totally inspired me, and I started taking toisanese classes last week. My grandparents are no longer with us, but I would love to be able to speak with more of my extended family in the future like you do with your po po. It is hard but I'm trying to be patient since it is still new to me. Thanks for the content you post 😊

Hey I am happy for you! It's nice to know that you are taking the initiative for what you feel is best despite what society may think! I wish you well on your journey! Most importantly that fact that you are willing to learn and connect embodying that spirit is the most important! You got this! Where are you taking toisanese classes? I should get on that too lol.

0:52 so humble..."...sik teng siu siu...". It's way more than siu siu. Love your channel and your efforts with Cantonese. Well done. Your use of CHE is hilarious - love it. This is the first time hearing someone speaking it with a NY accent; it's awesome and really cute 😁👍. I was fortunate enough to learn it from my grandparents and parents, but maintaining it is always a challenge. Finally, mamma mia, you look much younger than 30.

Very relatable. You're getting better in Canto. Also because you're actively trying & practicing, I'm sure PoPo is proud. The tones are hard but achievable. Keep going at it

first generation children from two distinct cultures ususally regret the early process of assimilation to american culture . you have managed to outcome these early denials and learned the best of both Chinese and Italian languages. So proud of your personal developments.

Thank you, reading your comment made me really grateful. I believe everyone feels this when they are a little different. I would imagine first generation Chinese Americans would feel this as well. I think everyone has different but similar paths to learn about themselves. Thanks for your support. You are viewing some of my past videos with my Grandma and family and I've stopped filming with them due to personal reasons. Wish you and your family well Jack!

Honestly your videos with your popo are actually helping me learn more Canto. The captions and listening to you guys speak Canto mixed with English is helping me learn more words. I understand way more than I can speak so I'm loving watching your videos and learning about food and learning Canto at the same time.

Hi Michael, When I was young, I only spoke English to my parents even though they spoke to me only in Cantonese. So although I can understand fluent Cantonese, I have a difficult time speaking it. Now, I wished they forced me to reply back to them in Cantonese. When my mom suffered from dementia, I had to speak to her in Cantonese, so although I struggled with it, I got better as I used it. My inflection was sometimes “off” so sometimes she couldn’t understand what I was trying to say. It was a little frustrating to say the least! Now that both my parents have passed, I don’t speak it anymore and I am afraid I will lose it. I hope my sons take the initiative to learn the language like you have done. I love hearing your Popo speak. It reminds me of my mom as she came from Hong Kong as well. How long did it take for you to become fluent? You speak it so well!

Hey Dora, thanks for sharing your unique special story. I'm sure it was tough for you and you did not know any better when you were younger so it's not your fault. I'm sending positive energy to you and your family and your sons. I don't by any means call myself fluent but i started becoming more serious about it when I was 22-23 and now I'm 30. So everyone is different it was just a time for me when I was interested in learning. For sure I could have done more at certain times or less. Be well

I don’t care if you’re good at speaking Cantonese, I just care if you have the motivation to learn this disappearing language. You know, when the Chinese government, Singaporean government, and the Taiwanese government all want to let Mandarin take over their country and make it the only Chinese language existing, we need to preserve Cantonese as a cultural property.
