So glad there’s still a desire to learn Cantonese, it seems like the mandarin had become so important that people disregard Cantonese nowadays. But it’s still such an important and beautiful language.

Totally! Very admirable! I’m impressed too that you can get that type of pronunciation so well in the beginning. I’m a Cantonese speaker also and even then, I get a lot of pronunciations incorrect. Usually results in my parents smacking me over the head or mocking me that my Chinese is so bad. I can’t share this video with my parents or they will set you as the standard as to why I can’t be like that and brownie points - you can speak mandarin!!! Cant compete until I get to your level lol

No offense, but I always find it ironic when a native speaker claims to know what a second language learner would find more or less difficult. I also notice that people are usually biased towards thinking their own language is the hardest to learn, or has the most subtleties or nuances.

@@katherinetutschek4757 i speak 3 languages daily. I am as fluent in all 3. I would say english is my main but my mother tongue is cantonese, so it's sort of my native tongue AND my second language. I would still say it's a hard language to learn.

Katherine Tutschek if you look at the official website thing about the average amount of hours it takes for an English native speaker (I’m talking about English only) takes to learn languages, group five (~2200 hours, hardest to learn) includes cantonese, mandarin, Japanese and I think one more language but I forgot. the writer of the comment could have also come to the conclusion that cantonese is hard from other people they know who are learning canto/personal experiences etc
@katherinetutschek4757
@katherinetutschek4757 3 жыл бұрын
@@penguin-tc1cx It's possible that Sweet Honeydew knows other ppl who have learned Canto or Mandarin as a second language, and I don't know if she grew up overseas and has the experience of learning her native language as a second language (like many overseas Chinese), but I've lived in Hong Kong for over a decade, and pretty much everyone there assumes that Canto is necessarily harder than Mandarin for native English speakers to learn. They aren't basing this opinion on real experience or that of their friends, their reasons for thinking it are "Cantonese doesn't have pinyin" (even though it actually does), "Cantonese has 9 tones" (though technically it's more like 6-7, whereas Mandarin is 4-5), and "white people are clueless when it comes to anything about Chinese language or culture." I admit that the expat culture in Hong Kong doesn't do much to change local people's minds in this regard, but it annoys me when they make blanket statements about white people. It's right up there with "all white people can't eat spicy food or organ meats". I think the official language ranking you mentioned is a good guideline, but individual aptitudes also play a role. If the girl in the video says she finds Canto more difficult that's completely valid cuz that's her experience. Personally I learnt Canto and Mandarin and didn't find one more difficult than the other (I grew up speaking only English). They take time to learn, but I wouldn't say they're "hard" per se. I actually find tones easier and less intimidating than grammatical gender and agreement, so something like Polish or French seems harder to me than Chinese. But my point is that everybody's different, and I feel like while people in Hong Kong have good intentions, their assumptions about white people's experiences and abilities can come off as more insulting and condescending than they realize.

Cantonese is considered to be closer to the traditional ancient Chinese language, whereas Mandarin was not an "authentic" Chinese language in old history. You would find that Cantonese is better suited when reading the old Chinese poems.
@chiupolini
@chiupolini 3 жыл бұрын
Can't say mandarin is not "authentic". They are both authentic. It is just that Mandarin is the old Chinese which got influenced by the northern tribes whereas Cantonese is old Chinese influenced by the southern tribes. Historically the changes in power, followed by a blending of different tribes with the Chinese culture took place with much higher frequency in the north than that in the south, the changes in the norther "Chinese" are also more pronounced, which resulted in the present day "Mandarin". If a guy from Tung dynasty could now talk, neither a Mandarin speaker or Cantonese speaker would understand what he says - until he writes it down.

All Chinese languages (like all other languages) retain some features from the original and change in other features. Cantonese sounds similar to Middle Chinese but it won't be 100% the same. Just like Hokkien may retain some Ancient Chinese features but it won't be 100% the same. Geographic isolation ensures some variation between the languages, keeping some features but changing in other features.

Just to give you a tip about 你 in Cantonese. Traditionally, they pronounced it Nei, which sounds more closer to the Mandarin pronunciation Ni. However, Hong Kongers have gotten lazy with their tones that some of the words that originally had the N sounds have now turned into L sounds. So when your Cantonese teacher was teaching you how to say You, it turned to Lei. The original standard Cantonese came from Guangzhou, but a large influx of the people in and around Guangzhou migrated to Hong Kong during its early days as a British colony, so Hong Kong Cantonese is just another version Guangzhou dialect, but influenced over the years from the British culture and British English words have mixed in with their Cantonese and thanks to Hong Kong's popular Cantonese entertainment, many newer generations of Cantonese speakers from mainland Guangdong province and from overseas now follow more of Hong Kong's way of speaking standard Cantonese. Other Examples of lazy Cantonese pronunciations with N sounds Milk 奶 Nai=Lai Patience 耐性 Noi Sing=Loi Sing Woman 女 Neoi=Leoi These 呢啲 Ni Di=Li Di Man 男人 Nam Yan= Lam Yan Lemon 檸檬 Ning Mung=Ling Mung New York 紐約 Nau Yeuk = Lau Yeuk Slave 奴人 Nou Yan=Lou Yan Work Hard 努力 Nou Lik=Lou Lik Twist 扭擺 Nau Bai=Lau Bai

Thanks for this explanation. My family is native Toisanese speakers but can speak the official provincial dialect of Cantonese, and because of this language root, we pronounced most of your attached word list traditionally vs lazy way. Consequently kids from Hong Kong made fun of us, but now I know it was coming from their “lazy” pronunciation issue, rather then our “so-called mis-pronunciation”.

@@suejmaryoung Nei is usually the correct way. It is the traditional way of pronouncing it in Cantonese spoken conversations and the older generation Guangzhou speakers pronounce it this way. I am a cantonese from Hong Kong, as you said, it is much easier for you to learn Cantonese because you speak Mandarin. Actually, many words are similar. You are recommended to learn Cantonese because most Chinese in the United State speak Cantonese. I 've discovered one perpetual phenomenon, most non-native speaker always sounds with different accent without exception. However, you sound great in Cantonese but to be honest, there is a lot of lovely foreign accent within . Work hard, 加油, add oil! you are amazing !

What makes Cantonese hard is not only the number of tones (the difference in tones are even subtler in Cantonese), but also the formality of words. Just like the song you picked, "喜歡你" (though spoken by Mandarin speakers) is formal for Cantonese speakers and we say "鍾意你" in daily conversations. Most Cantonese songs (99%) are written in formal words because that sounds more literary and cultured, but the fact is if you follow the lyrics to learn Cantonese, you would sound very awkward. We share the same written system with Mandarin speakers (forget about the difference between traditional and simplified characters), but we just speak in another way. So Cantonese speakers can easily understand Mandarin speakers, but not the other way around. Also there are quite a number of Cantonese characters, such as 乜, 嘢, 喺, 咗, 咁, which do not exist in Mandarin, but these characters are actually most frequently used. One more thing is the diversity of final particles in Cantonese, e.g. 呀, 吓, 喎, 咩, 咋, 啫, 嘅, 啩, 噃, 㗎, 啦, 喇, 嘩, 囉, 嘛 ... etc (and combinations like 㗎喎, 㗎噃, 咋嘛, 吓嘩, 㗎喇喎, 㗎囉噃). We put these final particles at the end of sentences. Sadly most Cantonese lessons do not teach learners about them, because even native speakers don't know how to tell the differences. You can say a sentence correctly without them, but this usually does't sound natural to us. Most people usually focus on 'tones' when talking about the difference between Mandarin and Cantonese. For me as a native speaker, tones are hard but still okay, it's the final particles that can drive someone crazy.

I hope you are aware that in normal spoken Cantonese conversations, 鍾意 is usually used to express liking someone or something, though it is never used for formal written purposes as you more than likely know that Cantonese dialect speakers write spoken Mandarin for official and formal purposes meanwhile regular spoken Cantonese does not entirely match formal Chinese writing system word for word. 喜歡 is used in spoken Cantonese conversations as well even 歡喜 is used in spoken Cantonese conversations, so it is fine using it in Cantonese conversations, but more often 喜歡 used for formal written purposes in the Cantonese speaking community and 鍾意 is used more often in spoken Cantonese conversations.

In the song, try to avoid the "lazy sound". Don't use 'l' instead of 'n' for 你. 轻抚你 (hing1 fu2 nei5), sounds better in the song. I do like the young generation use "lei5" in their daily conversation, but not here. I've been teaching Cantonese for over 20 years (not a professional teacher though)

She just has to understand the difference between the formal and layman usage I suppose, where these classic songs are usually taken "seriously" and would be pronounced properly. Most Cantonese songs would even have vocabulary or terms that is formal and hardly used in daily conversations.
