Should you be learning English alone? In today's English lesson, I give my opinion on whether you should be teaching yourself English or not. First, we will identify which type of English student you are. Then in the second part of the lesson, I'll talk more generally about the potential risks and frustrations that autodidacts (people who teach themselves a subject) encounter.

I agree, at some point, you have to get some outside help because it is so time-consuming if you learn everything on your own you spend lots of time finding answers when a teacher can tell in a sec.

I learnt English almost alone but I always had a good English teacher during my school education. I had some problems with grammar at some point of course but I asked my English teacher to explain and clarify me a few things especially with using mixed conditionals with continuous form and after that I kept learning English alone again. I was extremely motivated to get to know as much as I could. Now it's time for much more difficult dutch language. Greetings for you Jade :)

Even more, to study a language s prosody = rhythm, stress, intonation, probably needs 1 or more teachers or mentors/advisors, especially when 1 is surrounded by different dialects or smaller variations--- again, which to choose? Ms. Joddle, please help us to clarify these questions. Thank you very much.

I comment on my particular situation, as this seems to be a casuistic analysis. I was born in the 80s, and many of my fellows started learning the language even in kindergarten. And it wasn’t a bilingual school. Those sort of schools here in BA even teach subjects in English. I mean, you get a bilingual diploma which is recognized in the UK. Even in public schools you’ll have like 12 years of English lessons. And in Europe everybody speaks (or at least writes and reads) in English. And all the former colonies (like India, Pakistan, Nigeria) have an acceptable level of proficiency thereof. So, who are the targets of these lessons? I’ve seen hundreds of English institutes around me disappear. They became museums or demolished properties. Many native speakers comment here, and others remember old times and teachers, unresolved platonic loves. Can you share your analytics with us? Or with me? Thanks in advance.

Of course, Jade learning English alone is good for me. Are you not teaching alone?. Risk of learning! Oh no Jade, I am well protected by my pronunciation IPA in case; Yes when walking outside with my phone recording my speaking, people around doesn't exist for me. Oh wait, Jade, It is true when at home recording my reading with a micro, I imagine you as the ancient teacher with a stick ready to hit me on my head. And then I am afraid of you and read the text without mistake. By the way, I am following you for a long time, you are advancing at a giant pace in teaching English; I noticed this in this video. Oh Jade, please unveil to us your secret. Student JJ.

@@JadeJoddle yeah, that’d be the next step..i have started sounding more neutral now, and from here i’d be picking brit sounds so that my accent improves further but to the right direction .. as i am also trying to avoid sounding like American speakers. Having an identifiable British accent is my ultimate goal :)

@@shakti.rathore Please remember that spoken sides of all languages require us to learn prosody = rhythm, stress, and intonation. Hope fully Ms. Joddle can also teach these--- she would be the 1st ? youtube English teacher to do so.

You can study British Received Pronunciation dialect 1) pronunciation 2) prosody 2A) stress 2B) rhythm 2C) intonation (or one can study any other- Hindi, US English, etc.) These are the elements of speaking in every language or dialect. Hope that you can find these- perhaps from publishers like Assimil from France. Good luck!!
