The Great War

The Great War

Күн бұрын

After defeating the Russian Army in the early weeks of the war, the German and Austrian generals hope to push the Russians back with combined forces. But, like Napoleon 100 years earlier, they underestimate their enemy and his tactics and so the tides are turning on the Eastern Front. On the Western Front, the last frontline gaps are closed and the British army is entering a small town called Ypres, which will eventually be the symbol for the carnage in Flanders for the next four years.

This series does a good job at informing the viewer that the portion of the war on the Easter Front matched and often surpassed the war on the Western Front in terms of scale, brutality, gains and loses. I'm so tired of documentaries that focus all attention on the war on the Western Front as if the war in the East was a sideshow and not much more than a prolonged skirmish. Same goes for World War ll. All attention is given to Western Europe while the war in the East was actually bigger and bloodier.

+Mr.Science I believe that Stalin was a party to the invasion of his own country from his partnership with Hitler at the very beginning of the War in Europe. It could be said that by partitioning Poland in collaboration with Hitler and taking the Baltic States, they were well deserving of the Karma they got in 1941, and I'm referring to the leadership, not ordinary Russians who had no say in any of this. Also, it's quite possible they would have lost in their struggle with Germany without the massive amount of aid they got from the West. Nevertheless, for better or for worse, they did make a huge contribution to Germany's defeat.

+abc64pan The war in the East was only bigger and bloodier because of how the Soviets chose to fight the Nazis. If they could throw 16 million men into a meat grinder for 3 feet worth of ground, they did it without blinking and reaped very little reward for huge loss of life. Regarding WW2 that is. Had they given the slightest bit of concern for the men they ordered to their deaths as most Allied Generals would take into account, the casualties would have been infinitesimally smaller. Not to mention alot of the deaths were because they were shot by their officers for "desertion". Of course that doesn't stop some Soviet sympathizers from implying, that since the Soviets lost more men, they contributed more. Which again, is just utter nonsense especially considering they didn't give a single damn between 41-45 about the causalities. Failing to take that into consideration while looking at which front is "more widely known, or loved" is just choosing to be blind of the facts. Of course none of this even begins to take into account the tons of material sent from the United States of Awesome to the poor Soviet bastards. I hope I'm not busting your "The Soviets Won WW2" bubble. But no one single handedly won WW2. Not even the United States which factually speaking did more work than any other nations having spent the war fighting not just the Nazis *and* Italians in Europe *and* Africa but the Japanese in the Pacific. Last I checked, the Soviets didn't do much against Japan. Hell it took everything just to get them to "maybe" promise to help the US if they had to invade mainland Japan, which thankfully we didn't because The Bomb. But most assuredly, the Soviets didn't win anything by themselves.

Russians never liked giving up their land, yet only after conceding some land does the Russian army become truly fierce.
@sergeantassassin3425
@sergeantassassin3425 6 жыл бұрын
Well, keep in mind that, barring certain circumstances, land is easier to retake if you have more forces, supplies, and equipment than not. Russia, somehow, has never really had a shortage of people to throw into the meat grinder of warfare (I legitimately don't know how they manage to have so many bloody troops with such little usable soil for crop growth). Furthermore, if you can coax your opponent further into territory that YOU are more familiar with, you gain a decisive tactical advantage over them. Battles of attrition are my favorite battles, because you can really tear an enemy apart slowly and lengthily over the course of months, forcing them to commit greater and greater numbers of men, resources, supplies and equipment to a front they're simply not going to win, but can't give up now because they've already thrown so much at it. Get the hook into your foe, then bleed them for everything they're willing to give, take it all from them, then watch as they limp back to HQ broken and disillusioned.

Here's something that might explain the differences between Western European countries and Russia when it came to giving up land. Western Europeans had highly developed and more densely populated provinces, so when one of them came under occupation by an enemy force the economic effects were significantly bigger. You also had the problem of larger amounts of people living under occupation by a foreign country giving way to more demoralization and unrest in the country. Given that western Russia wasn't the focal point of their economy or population they could afford to let the enemy occupy it giving way to overextension and attrition in the enemy lines with a considerably smaller impact on their own troops and population.

That has always been the main reason for westward expansion for Russia since the XVIII century. The country lacks any natural barriers in the West, which is why having a large enough buffer zone is important in case of a European war.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the croses, row on row, That mark are places; and in the sky Marks still braveley singing, fly Scares heard amid the guns below. We are the dead.Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and wher loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up the the quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye breaks faith with us who die We shall not sleep though poppies grow In Flanders fields. this coment took an hour to do that meens that I set aside 1 hours of my life that I will never get back plz if you want more info serch up in Flanders fields and you'll find any thing a bout this poem

Federico Valsecchi Thank you so much. This is actually a world map, so, in the future we will hopefully be able to show maps of the rest of the world too. Tough it's tough research to "historify" modern maps like we did here. So, slowly but steadily we will improve on this front.

I've just started this series today, so trying to catch up. I love it. Very in depth and with the week-to-week episodes, you hear of a whole lot more that gets missed in 3-4 hour documentaries or even mini-series documentaries. Last year I bought a 100th anniversary dvd box set, and this series puts it to shame. So far so good, but man, Austria-Hungary comes off as the Gomer Pyle of the warring nations. I wouldn't want them on my side at this point.

A friend on FB linked me to your Between 2 Wars and I found out about this series from that. I am thoroughly enjoying the presentation. You briefly noted the ethnic diversity of the Austro-Hungarian empire which, I understand, was quite extensive. When you consider that other nations, Germany, France, Britain, Russia and Italy, were dealing with (essentially) one language in the army which would simplify command and control on one level, I believe the Austro-Hungarians had a mostly Germanic officer corps, with rank and file of the common army being Poles, Croats, Ruthenes, Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes, Serbs, Italians and Rumanians, which probably spoke different dialects if not languages making command and control very challenging and does not mention, as you pointed out, that some of these 'minorities' were disaffected. Add to this the presence of three religions (Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox and Islam) among the troops with all the accompanying religious prejudices, and you've got a mess. It is small wonder that the Austro-Hungarian army did not fare well during the Great War.

It is interesting that Russia was the only nation willing to give up ground when necessary. All the other nations seemed to think any violation of their territory was simply not allowable. That's why Belgium refused to allow Germany to march through their nation even though they had practically no hope of winning a war against them
@TheGreatWar
@TheGreatWar 8 жыл бұрын
+TheStapleGunKid It's also apparent when you see how Moltke freaked out when the Russians entered East Prussia and how parts of the German military built up their legend after the armistice by repeating that the enemy never invaded German soil in the West.
