I also want to thank everyone who has done the art course for the videos I've been able to make on this channel for the past year. Because of this art course's success, I have been able to take on fewer client projects and make art videos and painting tutorials on this channel for free. I don't take that for granted, and I wanted to thank everyone who has contributed in a way that matters. However, I had no idea that this course would be over 2 times bigger than the original. (OOPS?) I intentionally made the project more complex to focus on more advanced techniques to continue where Master Sky Painting left off. Glad to hear you’re enjoying it. I’m glad that there were so many design issues that popped up in the process parts of that project. I really wanted to show in practice how to pinpoint and solve those visual problems when things are not working. In a KZfaq video so many of those usually end up getting cut out for retention but in the course I was free to prioritise getting all of the information in without thinking about the platform restrictions. Having full creative control over my own course was also freeing. I didn’t need to skip anything that I deemed important for the process.

Thank you too! I remember being so nervous when releasing the first part of this art course. It was so much easier the second time now that I can notify people that I made a bigger version of the thing they already have 🐻💖 I also invested in new production gear used in my videos since and in the making of this new course. That also gave me some confidence, and I’m really happy about how the project came together. I know this might be gross to people who romanticise hating their artwork, but I love how the painting in this project turned out. I want to print it in my workroom to remind me of this whole experience. 🌅🐻

You sold me. I have been a sketcher for years but finally started to draw again and I have decided to give the digital media a try and I have been finding it difficult to switch to the digital due to the feel of it. I have enjoyed your videos for a few months now and I am going to give it a try.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko Ай бұрын
I haven’t mentioned this in a while, but there’s nothing wrong with a mixed-media approach. I love painting digitally, but I would never stop drawing with a pencil. Digital drawing just doesn’t give me the same accuracy as pencil on paper, but for painting, I prefer the flexibility of digital painting. Painting also doesn’t have the faff that traditional tools have. Sure I love the depth of colour in my oil paintings but I rarely have the time or patience for washing the brushes and frankly my hands already have the damage of years of washing the toxic chemicals off them. I’m not advocating one approach or the other but just saying it’s worth considering that maybe a combination of different ways to make art could be the right choice for you. Especially if you’re already familiar with sketching traditionally there’s no reason to “start from scratch” instead you can leverage your existing skills and just pile new techniques in the mix. This experimental approach has always opened new creative possibilities for me and I’m sure you could find something interesting that way as well 🐻

The reason why clouds were the subject in the first part was because they allowed me to cover the entire composition checklist in shapes that anyone can do. For colour theory, white is the most difficult colour for beginners to paint. In this course those fundamentals are assumed and they are applied to more complicated subject. For beginners I recommend doing the Sky course first as all the composition, blend mode, workflow and layer mask techniques apply to all kinds of painting. Not just clouds. ☁️⛅

I bought you Mastering Sky Painting Secrets course and this additional course is so gracious of you, thank you! If it's different, I will be buying it ASAP.
@angrymikko
@angrymikko 24 күн бұрын
That one is different because it has to fit that platform's time limits. Those are also edited by the staff working there. I think it's suitable for anyone who doesn't have much time and wants to get started quickly. For my own course, “Sky” and “Building,” I wanted each lesson to be as long or short as necessary. Some parts are just faster to show and explain, while others benefit from different examples that show how they apply to the painting process itself. Those lessons just are not possible in the way Domestika produces their videos. I am not criticizing them because they know their target audience and make their content fit that need to the best of their ability. My own approach comes from years of teaching concept art and its pretty easy to tell when students need more in-depth look at something and when I have found a way to explain a concept so that everyone immediately gets it. Planning and shooting videos with a big company was definitely a great learning opportunity for me. They were super effective with their planning and gear and it was a privilege to be able to witness how that company moves through complicated processes like a well oiled machine.

And if i buy (A) i should start with the fundamentals course right ? Thanks!
@angrymikko
@angrymikko Ай бұрын
I highly recommend starting from Sky Painting and THEN moving on to Building on Fundamentals as the latter builds on the skills in the former lesson. Both are designed in a way to fit both ways of image construction. There are no lines in the first Sky art course and in the second they are completely optional. The sketching happens without lines and the lines used as a tool are not part of the final piece at all.

@angrymikko
@angrymikko 27 күн бұрын
@IIIredbawlzIII the ram is weirdly tied to the storage of the unit. I have 16gb on M1 iPad because I have the 1tb version. I included several different sizes of the procreate file for different devices so make sure you are opening the smallest one. BUT this file is only there to demonstrate the layer structure lesson. All of that information is clearly visible and narrated in that lesson as well. The procreate file is not at all important to derive that information in that segment as the process is outlined in the workflow tutorial as well. If you do have any questions about this though then by all means don’t hear to ask me. I’ll try to help with any issues you might have 🐻

@IIIredbawlzIII maybe it works for general public but at least to me it would be a better strategy to advertise that the higher priced ones have more than extra storage. If you are already confident in using masks in CSP, then you can still use all the composition, workflow and design elements in literally any program. However, if your main pain point in art is the UI of CSP, then I don't recommend these courses. I’ve used CSP, Procreate and Ps for work, and the features used for painting in all of them are the same. If you prefer using CSP, then I see no good reason to put any effort into learning the UI of another application. In my opinion, it is better to focus those efforts on learning composition because that is the longest road in art. As an exception, of course, I can understand why someone would like to switch programs just because of cost reasons. If I painted just as a hobby, I’d have no reason to pay, for example, Adobe Cloud services.

CSP is a good app. If it didn’t have that subscription model I’d use it more too. At the end of the day these apps are just tools and what matters is how you use them. in these art courses the techniques regarding the tools are really simple and fast to teach. That leaves the rest of the course to discover actual image construction techniques that make a painting work.

If I have this Gumroad course and your Domestika course. With which one do you suggest I begin with?
@angrymikko
@angrymikko Ай бұрын
Master Sky should be the place to start and then move on to Building on Fundamentals. Domestika courses have their own production rules which make them short and in my understanding very project oriented so it’s a bit different audience too. They have a pretty strict time limits for lessons but for my own course I can decide those on my own since I did all of the editing too. If you have access to all three I’d suggest doing them in order of: “sky” “building” and then domestika since you can use all the techniques making the project as challenging as you like.

In both of the courses you make the artwork from scratch. The procreate file given in the first course (in various sizes for different devices) is merry to show the layer structure outlined in one of the lessons. That is shown fully in the lesson video as well and as such the file itself is not at all necessary to complete either of these projects.

@@angrymikko thanks for the quick response! I went ahead and purchased (yay) last night and figured that aspect out. I know some courses rely on their examples so I wanted to be sure, but I’ve wanted the course since you originally relased it. Just an fyi for anyone who has a gen 8 ipad you need the mini-example for looking at the layers. I don’t have the option for a lot of layers if I want bigger projects so mostly I’ve learned to use a small amount of layers wisely, hopefully that works in this case because the type of atmospheric/landscape type painting you do is what I’ve wanted to learn since forever, but digital painting is hard for me for some reason. I haven’t had my ah-ha moment…yet. Wish me luck with your course and thanks for all your hard work! You really are a great person/teacher. Oh and I love the color palettes. Will help until I get better at color theory. Please also keep in mind I am an abstract artist and really have very little skill at drawing or painting (people,places, things, animals, etc you name it). I am well and truly a beginner, a very determined one. So hopefully this course is the key.
@angrymikko

Don’t worry about layers. Both of the projects use a LOT of layers but both of them have plenty of layer management tricks to get around hardware limitations. In the second project I intentionally pushed the resolution and complexity to the limits of my hardware to show in multiple areas like screen layers and environment groups how to manage the workflow so that you can keep the relevant selection and editing options open. Even when you hit those layer limits. ☝️ Glad you’re enjoying the palettes! Seriously I’m happy I made them but those were… a lot 😅 Super handy for getting started though : )

I highly recommend doing these in the order of “Sky” THEN “Building” sky subject is used to teach all the fundamentals of digital painting from scratch. “Building” uses and expands on the techniques learned in the first course and they’re applied to more complex building project. To keep the information as easy as possible to implement the same lessons are not repeated in these two courses and the content was planned to teach digital painting from zero. Despite sky being the project topic in the first project it really is just a vehicle to teach composition and techniques for all kinds of art. This is clearly stated in several parts of the first project. The checklist method taught in “Sky” is referred to every time a composition problems are highlighted and fixed in “Building”. Hope that answers your question.

@angrymikko 13 күн бұрын
@Nihhuz Hey there. The brush is the first one in the Sky Master Brush set. You can find that download in the bottom of the course materials. I recommend using that for the block-in phase and if you’re having trouble between 2 & 3 I’ve included the entire process between them in “extra materials” where you can see the block in come together. Don’t worry about making mistakes in that part as the composition errors covered are meant to look for them after your block in is done. It’s important to not take that phase too seriously. Work at 100% opacity with as big of a brush you feel comfortable with. I didn’t edit out anything in the block-in bonus materials part because I wanted to show that I did 2 whole block-ins before I settled on the 3rd one. For colours you can use any of the palettes that come with the course but they can all be changed when you start “How to choose colours”. I hope this helps and if you have any questions let me know 🐻
