LEARNING THE PERFECT FLIP TURN

This week we decided to take it back to one of the most basic skills in the pool; flip turns. Having a working flip turn automatically distinguishes you from the crowd during recreational pool time, not to mention having a masterful turn that scorches competitors during a race. It is, simply put, one of the most important building blocks to learn for swimmers of all levels.
That is why we decided to focus so heavily on it this week. There are three main components to think about; Your approach into the wall, your foot placement, and how you push off the wall, turning to your stomach. The thing that many people forget about with good turns is that you are trying to absorb the forward momentum that you have coming into the wall. Any lag or loss of momentum means that you are not flipping with maximum efficiency.
Give a few flip turns a try at practice at let us know what you think! Recommendations for our next video topic? Let us know in the comments below!

Any drills for focusing on how to breathe the weaker side for freestyle? I always favor my right side for breathing and I can't do bilateral breathing because of that. Awesome vid as always.

More cross-over turns--why aren't yours as good as Ashley's? Not giving you a hard time, I am having a horrible time with it. Another video to demonstrate how to improve would be good, versus already having the perfect turn (like Ashley's)

Shallow on detail guys! Seems to me the hardest details a novice swimmer faces is on the front end of the flip...hands at the waist....slight body dolphin to initiate the flip...hands remain pointed from whence you came and where you’re going coming out of your turn and after a slight “back pull” for additional leverage to get the legs over your tuck, your arms pivot and you should find yourself on your back, legs bent, feet against the wall arms extended above your head. At this point you spring towards the other end and roll over. (What we take for granted in learning at practice over years and literally tens of thousands of tries has to shared...in super slow motion and underwater.)

I will freely admit this is something I just never bothered to learn how to do properly. Looks fun though, and a good way to make sure you don't cheat and grab extra air at the wall. Thanks for the video, I'll probably finally make the effort. 😂

How about a video on minor freestyle changes that can help drop seconds? Someone who is not seeing a drop in say 100s or 50s in practise, what can they do?

Thanks for this amazing video ! But what can I do to prevent using the hands while turning ?
@PhlexSwim
@PhlexSwim 6 жыл бұрын
This just comes with practice. You will notice that you engage with your hands a lot when you dont have as much speed going into the wall and you aren't getting into a tight enough ball. Think about coming into the wall faster and getting into a much tighter ball. That way you will spin quicker and not need your hands to guide you. Some great examples of good hand placement in the montage of the video.

Hey there! First off, congrats on taking the plunge into swimming (pun intended). What we would recommend is isolating these two skills before you join them together. Grab a kickboard and do some kicking until you feel really strong after a few weeks, do the same with a pull buoy and pulling. Then start slowly working on a few strokes or even a lap of kicking and swimming smoothly at a time. The more patience you have with it the easier it will be. We promise you will get there! Look into local masters programs as well, they are guaranteed to help!

Well, for sure every one does things differently. Interesting to me is that you don't seem to use that little dolphin kick just before starting your flip, and you don't seem to put any effort into using your arms in kind of a bicep pull that also can help speed up the spin. Seems to be some agree to disagree on these points.

The demonstrator is demonstrating a MAJOR error that should be easily fixed. As the swimmer initiates the turn, the palms must be turned over so that they are facing the bottom of the pool and can press on the water. If you watch the video from above, you can easily see the swimmer's palms facing the "sky" which leaves the swimmer's hands/arms in a weaker position for aiding in rotation. Just as you'd not lift a heavy box with the backs of your hands as you are weak in that position, you turn your palms to make your arms stronger. TRY IT! You'll like it. When you do it correctly with palms originally facing the bottom of the pool and pressing on the water, you'll rotate faster. Your hands actually anchor in a position with your fingertips facing the direction you WILL be going. Your head actually comes around to your hands and your hands end up around your face or the top of your head. You are so much stronger in that position that it will feel as if your hands are doing almost nothing. Depending on the person, the simple move of turning your hands with palms facing the bottom of the pool and pressing on the water will take 0.1 to 0.3 seconds off of each turn. In addition, you'll feel as if you are in far greater control of your somersault.
