When I was a child I did have holidays in Jaywick in the 70s and 80s but in more recent years whenever i have returned to that area I have only really gone to Jaywick twice and I was shocked at how it looked. Shattered childhood memories and not somewhere I would want to go back to.

50 years ago, my working class family went on holiday to Jaywick sands. I can remember the name of the place we stayed, it was called " Sunbeam Ave" we used to hire a four wheeled bike, with 2 people side - by - side. I loved it!!!. My dad, mum would go to the club during the day, and we would play games at night...the toilets were outside. I'll never forget Jaywick. How sad to see it all go...R.I.P

In 2020 and 2021 I was delivering mobility scooters sold online for a living all over the UK. I had the unfortunate job of delivering right in the heart of the shanty town twice. It is every bit as bad as the media states and I was getting a lot of attention being in a relatively new hire van. It didn't help that the customer handed me £100 cash in broad daylight to pay for his battery upgrade with pretty much half the street watching out there window. As I was taking my tools back to the van on the main road near at the sea front after making some adjustments there was a gang coming my way making a lot of noise with large dogs. I didn't bother packing things away, I jumped straight in the van and got out of there. After going around a couple of corners I stopped and sorted things out and took the opportunity to get a few pics on my phone. If I go back there it will be in a rusty MK4 Golf or a rat van to fit in with the population. I still show off the pictures and talk about the place to this day. I might have been somewhere worse but I can't remember where.

I believe you can squarely put the blame on TDC for the miss givings of Brooklands. I also feel this incessant need to lump Jaywick with Brooklands courses confusion and is to blame for some of the problems. Had TDC completely sepperated the needs of Jaywick and Brooklands, I think we would have had a different outcome and the money to deal with the problems in the 70s and 80s. People don't seem to remember or report the fact that TDC offered people that owned plots during the 70s in Brooklands £50 a plot and the Jaywick resident association rejected the offer, which quite frankly was insulting as the plots started at £50 in the 30s. After that, the TDC decided to put mains sewage into Brooklands and told residences to bring their homes up to building codes for the time. An almost impossible task as these were simple 2 room buildings for the use of holiday homes. The question should be, what can the TDC do now to recompense the poor decision-making of the 70s and 80s. I believe they should find every owner of every plot and work out who owns what and sort out the bad landlords by enforcing the building code onto them. When they can't, compulsory purchase them. All abandoned plots owners should be giving the same choice. All owners that live in their own homes, should be helped with grants. Once the wheat from the chaff has been sorted out. Clean out all the empty plots and rebuild council housing on them, with a new mix of commercial properties to rent. Where their is commerce, there is always hope.

It desperately needs investment and a decent transportation. . . And modern homes. Once this change happens everyone and their mother will want to live there.

From 1950 to 1980 best holidays ever even with lack of water laid on and outside toilets …someone benefits from this deprivation now as then, and yet the beach has been improved beyond imagination…..sad disgusting neglect .

Jaywick does have a nice quiet beach and I'm sure the residents enjoy it. It also has a good community.

The Brooklands end of Jaywick has always been the worst but Jaywick Village is and has always been very good

I have had some good times in Jaywick during the summer months.
