Getting enough exercise can be a real challenge if you're trying to avoid rehearsing the bad behaviors. I took my dog for a walk this morning and could hardly go two steps without her constantly pulling the leash. It was embarrassing not being able to control my dog at all so it made it difficult to walk her. I came across other videos saying to use a prong collar but I just knew there had to be another way. I followed each step in your video and I was SHOCKED. COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY! She Immediately started walking on the leash like a pro. No tension on the leash at all! Not only that I see a change in her attitude like she understands and wants to learn. I can’t say thank you enough! Awesome video!

Yeah, I don't understand the obsession so many people have with prong collars. I'd rather exhaust every method in existence that doesn't physically hurt/cause discomfort for the dog.

One of the best explanations of leash pulling on KZfaq. Makes it sound very simple. What I take from this is - get the excitement down and the focus up.

I know, I should send in a video of my Goldie, she is 6 and all over the place. We are close to the beach and she wants to get there as fast as possible to swim. She gets so exited seeing her harness and leash, that she is thirsty by the time I hooked her up, she will swirl around and give little jumps of excitement. I sometimes take her down without her leash and she is actually easier to handle and much calmer. This pooch does not get close to her excitement, I would love mine being this calm.😃

Our 13-month old lab unlearned everything over the winter and we have struggled all spring and summer. In 10 minutes today, Siri was loose leash via your small treat method as I walked along our path to the nature trails (full of geese). And once off leash she didn’t even stray far (not that she ever runs away) once she got her 100 yard run in!!!! I was so proud of her. Will keep working on consistency.

i love this video. My roommate got a half Catahoula half lab puppy. He is 5 months old. He is amazing considering the little training he has had. Most of it has been me. Twist is I just had a hip replacement and was taking him around the cul-de-sac sans leash with my walker. He has a propensity to stay close on his own. I took advantage of that and tought him "wait" very easily. "come" with a sweeping motion towards me has been successful even when he was running to a person he wanted to greet. On his own he stays close and waits if he is more than 15 feet aways or so (90% of the time). At our nearby off-leash park if i get up and move he comes to me with no commands. He waits calmly in the car until I give him the "let's go" signal that he can get out. It really didn't take much work to teach these. Wonderful pup. But...he is wretched on a leash and he legally must be leashed for neighborhood walks. I am off walker but not able to do the running or trotting backwards, etc in the video due to my physical condition. I know this is a lot, but do you have any alternative suggestions? thank you

thank you so much for these clear, easy-to-follow videos that give accessible techniques. my dogs are adults and rescues. they are wonderful. to learn more about them and how to work with them, I took them to a training class where they became reactive and basically a mess. I took only two sessions before the stress was too much for me day to day. I then tried some private sessions, but the trainer wouldn't put together a map for me -- we do this for that, we do this, for that, and then this will lead to the outcome you want. They just had me doing basics (which of course I do every day) such as look/focus, touch, come, and down. This didn't help with lead pulling or reactivity. I then started looking for videos with another training outfit, but their videos are up-sells into expensive courses that I don't understand how they fit together (they don't give enough information), and I need to know before purchase. And then, randomly, I found this video about 4 days ago. I watched it and started working the door as part of our training sessions (where we do focus, touch, come, and down -- we don't do 'sit' because they are greyhounds). Well, two days later, and neither dog will rush out the door ahead of me! I'm now working on the attention exercises, which has been great. Today, my partner walked our 'freight train' -- and he said she was amazing. Loose lead 90% of the time. And this is after only 4 days! I'm so thankful that I found these videos. Now I'll look for one that deals with dog reactivity. :)

Ja, we reduced out lab's food so he could have treats. There are some treats we won't give him because they're too calorific (looking at you dentistix that don't actually clean a dog's teeth, grr). But ja, we modified his diet so he wasn't getting too much.

Oh yayyyyy !! Thank you I forgot about the square walk.. I had forgotten all about this part.. my baby is 12 weeks and 35 pounds Pit Bull / Great Dane mix. I'm struggling getting her to even take a walk.. she just goes potty walks around the parking lot.. but to take her on a stroll.. she's nopes every time. I appreciate you.. this and this video enough. I haven't trained a puppy in 14 years. I lost my Service Dog 3 years ago and my ESA a year ago.. one was 13 the other one 12.. I knew there was one thing I forgot that was so crucial !! I'm so excited!! I found it.. Thanks also goes to My Creator for leading me here.. we had a rather " trying " day.. I did learn one thing today about her, she loves the rain ! I really wanted her to take a stroll with me so we could try to bond. We're struggling to bond too.. I really like her a lot she's so smart and cute but, still really biting, mostly by accident now? She's a cheeky Lil devil dog.. I pray we have many happy tracks on our life journey.. I'm really digging her vibe. Thank you again.. finally I feel like I have real hope for our bond to grow into that groovy kinda love 💘

Its not, its gonna take not getting far from your own door at first. This is great! It's valuable to see the trial and error to know what to do when my training isn't getting the desired behaviour right away. I see many videos showing training and the puppers doing everything right on the first try (due to the amazing dog trainers), but knowing what to do when it doesn't go right is the most helpful! I can get her through the front door and into a “sit”, and after that it is constant pulling in every direction! She can get a momentary loose leash if I reverse direction, then she charges in the new direction -even cheese won’t distract her!

A simple head collar solved the problem *immediately* with my dog Homer, probably a malinois-and-god-knows-what-else mix. He pulled like a sled dog when I first got him, but a Gentle Leader head collar put a stop to the behavior in just one walk. It was amazing.

This is good to hear! I have a puppy melanois who is pretty wild on walks and tries to chase everything. I've not started using head collars yet, but I think I will start soon seeing your comment :) Oh but im wondering if it must be gentle leader head collars or any head collars would do.

My dog is 10 months old. I've trained her to wait at the door before going out. She will sit in the hall behind me even with the door wide open untill I'm ready to go and she won't blast out the door. She will go out a little bit and wait for me to close the door. She is slowly calming down on walks. She doesn't pull as much as she did and most of the walk she doesn't pull. When I'm almost home I let her off the lead at the edge of my neighbours house to get her used to walking off lead. When we are approaching a pedestrian crossing or crossing the road she stops and with until I say "ok" or if I start walking again. I leave her lead loose when we are waiting to cross the road.

My dog is 11 months old and does pull all of us in my family and it is hard to train an overly excited dog but I can't drain his energy that much so how did you do it and what breed is she and way to go for training her that well so far

My Staffy mix is 6 1/2 months old. We’ve had him for almost 2 months. I haven’t figured out yet if he’s listening better to stop the pulling, or if my shoulder muscles have gotten used to the pulling.

@@jennalopez9772 my dog is also an overly hyper Cavalier King Charles. I have to bring her for two walks a day while walking fast and play with her toys with her a few times during the day. Otherwise she is so full of energy she will drive me up the wall. But in the last few weeks she has started very slowly to calm down. Any dog under two to three years old is still very much s puppy and will be full of energy though.
