This project has two parts, leatherworking for the net and 3D printing for the supports. We started with the leather. We were also using a laser in one of our projects for the first time and learned a lot about both. After a lot of experiments (read: trial and error) we settled on a crisscrossing design for the leather net. We cut and engraved it in 7 different setups on the Glowforge. We used tape to help w/ these setups and keep everything spaced evenly. Once we were done with the laser cutting it was time for another first! Hand stitching leather. Also super satisfying. Throughout the leatherworking we were working on our clamps.
We had modeled the clamps before we went up to see Bob and thought that making them would be a cakewalk, especially when we found out that he had the MOARstruder (which honestly was amazing), but of course we ran into complications. After remodeling almost everything and a lot of fiddling it functioned great. We didn’t finish or paint anything because the black PLA with the super thick layer lines actually looked pretty nice. We also really liked the brass accents we used for the thumb nuts (and also the heat set threaded brass insert, even though you can’t see it much).

I love the way you guys cut together your videos. You show all the mistakes and goofs, which is a huge part of the process of making anything. And you guys deserve way more than 55k subs. Great vid as always guys! Just a quick tip from a leatherworker... When punching for stitches, use a piece of scrap leather, or plastic cutting board, instead of a piece of wood under where you're punching. You won't dull the chisel nearly as fast then, and don't need to wrestle the punch out quite so much. Nice job on the build!

Hey y'all, loved the vid and collab! Pro-tip on cutting threaded rod: if you thread a nut on both sides past the point where you cut, taking it off post-cut re-aligns the thread and helps with the whispy bit! This still works if you wait till after rounding off the threads to remove it too. Ancillary pro-tip depending on the kerf of your cut and thread angle, if you cut the part of the thread that overlaps the saw kerf first, you can usually avoid creating the whispy bit of metal. Hope to see more videos soon!
@EvanAndKatelyn
@EvanAndKatelyn 6 жыл бұрын
yes we actually had brought a nut over to do just that! But since we wanted to round over the sharp edge anyway we rounded it first, and then realized we didn't need the nut. Didn't know that about cutting with the angle - thanks!

18.28 - I'm sure someone has mentioned this by now, but if you put a nut on the rod first, then make the cut, when you unscrew the nut it will reshape the threads nicely, easier and quicker than sanding.

Haha yeah, Evan is not meant for a basement shop! 😋 In some doorways he literally had to duck, totally was having an Elf moment 😋 Also thank you! We've been playing more and more with overlapping audio to keep the pace quick so its cool that you noticed! 😁

depending on the type of plastic you use to 3D print you may be able to use an acetone nail polish remover to smooth those layer lines out and make it look that little bit more professional!

next time you want to 3d print something and you want it to be stronger than pla, you should look into aluminum casting... you can use sand casting or lost pla casting (lost pla requires more equiptment)

i've only watched a playtrhough (because i don't have a switch) and i can assure you that Star Allies is a great game! (it would be better with your voice in it though) also, an idea for a video somewhere in the future: maybe you can make a proper Nintendo Switch dock (i've heard that the Nintendo branded one might actually scratch the screen)
