The SuperTool 200 had some key differences from the first generation of the SuperTool. It included a new lock mechanism first and foremost, but it also had a few other nuanced differences. It shares the same overall toolset with the original tool, not that different from today's variant. It's run was fairly short, produced between 2001-2005. Let's look back at the SuperTool 200.

This one e takes me down memory lane. Th ST200 was my first Leatherman. I got it for Christmas in 2003. I had gone off to college in Wyoming and almost every guy I met had a Leatherman on his belt. I didn't even know there were different models and just asked my parents for a "Leatherman" for Christmas. I used the heck out of it. I broke a screwdriver doing something dumb and broke the plier head trying to pry a frozen car door open one particularly cold winter day. I didn't even realize the warranty that LM has and just threw it in a drawer and bought an original Wave which served me well for many years. I later sent in the 200 under warranty and was thrilled to receive a brand new ST300. I've often thought about picking up a 200 to carry again, but I already have a Core, ST300 and Rebar so I doubt I'd carry it. If you get chance to picknup a Core you really should. I actually like it better then the 300. The pliers have a finer tip, the tools don't clump, and it doesn't suffer from the plier binding issues that the newer tools are plauged with. Thanks Ben 👍👊

Man, I wish they still had this in production. I like these simple but powerful tools rather than all the fancy stuff going around. I also like that strong lock mechanism.

I got this as a christmas present from the norwegian military in 2004 while serving at Fredriksten fortress. Got stolen from me a couple of years later. Always thought the locking «bows/curves» were too tight on mine, so I usually opened another tool to open the lock

Ben! I really love the ST200. In my opinion, I think it wins the award for most improved tool over a previous generation. One improvement you did not mention: changing the serrated blade from a spear-point in the original ST to a sheepsfoot in the ST200. This made the serrated blade in the ST200 much safer to use as a rescue blade. It's interesting to note that in the Core and ST300 the serrated blade is almost a reverse-tanto; whereas the serrated blade in the Rebar hearkens back to the ST200. I think the development of the lock mechanism from the ST to the ST200 to the Core is fascinating: the lock lever on the ST200 was clearly designed to solve a specific problem on the original ST: how does one lift the lock tab if all of the tools are deployed? The Core, on the other hand, represents a complete re-thinking of the entire lock mechanism -- which was then used on all of the Zytel multitools and now the ST300 and Rebar. It illustrates the benefit of taking a step back to rethink a problem rather than hyper-focusing on only one aspect of a problem.

Wow just checked mine - and it says Leatherman USA on the pliers. Still like new by the way because it was lost in a packing box for about 15+ years and I bought a Surge by the time it reappeared (about 3 minutes after I spend $200 plus on the Surge LOL). The Surge being my Leatherman EDC along with a SAK Hiker. Another great episode mate.

Another great video, Ben. Boy, you can sure see the quality that went into the manufacturing of that tool. I like the vintage tools better in the aspect of the stampings and markings...they put more time into that part of the tool.

May I suggest that you do a review of the Gerber Legend 800 multi-tool...this was released back in the late 1990s as the first true competitor to the original Leatherman WAVE. The Legend did have some very interesting features including a one hand opening knife blade, saw blade exchanger and Fiskars scissors, and is still produced today, but the version they manufacture today does not have the Gator grips and Simonds file that were used in the late 1990s.

Terrific review as always, Ben. The ST200 is one of my favorites with its crescent shaped locks, quality feel, and precision close. The only other Leatherman I know of that uses that type of lock mechanism is the Pulse, which is kind of the ST200's little brother I guess. For the most part those Supertools got bigger as they went. The ST200 is a little less than half an ounce heavier than the ST100 and a little less than an ounce lighter than the ST300. But the Core is actually about 2 tenths of an ounce heavier than the ST300. I think you'd like the Core, Ben. It has the same tools as the ST300, but the pliers head is slimmer. The outside also has a smoother appearance and feel because the handles are rounded on the ends and don't taper narrower near the pivot. The handles also don't have tool opening cutouts between the two halves or locks that stick out so far. The uniform handle dimensions are achieved by the insertion of what look like Zytel spacers on either side of the pivots.

Thanks for the video. The problem of the 300 lock is that it snaps all the way to the width of the tool, so to make way for the lanyard to exit, is a bit more difficult, unless they shave some of the width of the current lock, but then again the current locks teeth would interfere. If they remove the current lanyard ring and the washer next to the main blade, they could maybe fit a pair of scissors. That would be awesome

For some reason the last 3 Leathermans I handled had very smooth pliers. My latest is a Surge and the pliers were very stiff at first but after some cutting and squeezing they became veery smooth. It must be luck. They are also BO which has nothing to do with stiffness in my experience.

Hey Ben. Question: What's the oldest multitool/Pocket Knife you own? Do you have a preference to either newer modern tools or older more vintage tools?
@txtoolcrib
@txtoolcrib 2 жыл бұрын
As far as preference, I like a several of the older models. In particular, I think the SideClip is an excellent tool. The oldest that I personally own is the Leatherman PST from 1985, though I have owned older Victorinox knives in the past that were older than the PST.

I really like your videos, and your down to earth honest approach makes me trust your opinion, and this sometimes ends up being expensive… But that is a good thing. The only down side to it is that here in Germany most of this tools are ilegal to carry, unless the knife can only be opened with 2 hands. Since my favorite tool is also a Surge, I basically can’t take it anywhere outside the house, and can’t keep it in the car. Are you aware of any company that makes replacement blades for Leatherman tools? I think it would be an interesting business to allow people in Europe to make our tools legal and useful again, by selling mod blades that can be opened only with 2 hands. I contacted Leatherman about this, and their answer was that they don’t sell 2 hand blades for existing tools, and that modified tools loose the warranty. Why do I need warranty for something I can’t use? Just want it to be legal.

Wave 2H Supertool 300 Rebar Bond All of those have 2 handed blades. Bond is a slip joint one though.

@simonh6371 2 жыл бұрын
At least you in Germany can carry some multitools/knives with locking blades as long as they're not 2 handed opening, and as Chef Boi Arby points out you can carry a Rebar or Supertool 300, which I can't here in the UK since we aren't allowed to EDC any locking blade, even if it's a tiny 3cm Opinel. Also I'd like to buy a Swisstool but again I wouldn't be allowed to carry it under normal circumstances, but you can carry all of these in D.

@@simonh6371 Do you know if you are allowed to carry a Bond due its slip joints or does the design of the tool cause it to be considered locking.

@@chefboiarby304 thank you! I have a Swisstool that is legal to carry in the car, I was just inquiring to find out if there is some way to change the blades of the Surge to make it legal, because I really like it 😊 if not I will follow your suggestion and maybe get a wave 2h and still be able to use the bits and bit extender.

@@chefboiarby304 That's a really good question mate! Although Section 139a Criminal Justice Bill 1988 states that ''folding penknives with a cutting edge under 3 inches'' are legal carry, it doesn't further define or specify what a folding blade is. However in 1992 there was a case - DPP vs Harris - where a defence lawyer appealed a conviction, actually of a guy who'd been carrying a lock knife in central London. The conviction was upheld and it was further ruled that ''For the purposes of section 139 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988 a "folding pocketknife" is a knife which is readily and immediately foldable at all times simply by the folding process.''. By this definition the Bond, PST and even the Micra are not folding knives since the knife can't be folded away unless the handles are closed around the pliers. As this is a precedent any prosecutor will pull this out of the bag in any case to secure a conviction, whether it's morally right or not. So to err on the side of caution I wouldn't carry a Bond. Even the Rebar knifeless is illegal under the original definition of Section 139a since this outlaws the carrying in a public place of ''bladed or pointed articles'' and the reamer/awl on it is locking.
