Leatherman vs Victorinox : How To Strip Electrical Wire With Each Brand

For many years I never saw anyone show the proper way, or at least what I consider to be the most effective way, to strip insulation from electrical wiring using a Leatherman multi tool. Well it seems that I have been using the wire stripping function on Victorinox knives incorrectly for quite some time myself, as has been pointed out to me by one of my viewers, Theoren Morris. I want to thank you sir for setting me straight on this. It is not overly complicated, though I do wish they would change the wire stripper notch geometry a little bit to make this a more effective process.

I've seen that "half stop method" in so many videos in the last couple of years... As you said here, considering the knives with more layers, I really do not think it was designed to be used that way. It's a nice hack that might work in some situations, but I also believe that the "score and pull" method is the way to go.

NOW you tell me - after I have already filed my Victorinox notches into Surge-like 'V' notches.

The frayed wire cutter on the back above the crimper (on the surge), works well for stripping wire. You gotta find the sweet spot of not applying too much pressure to cut the wire, and then you can just pull the wire and move the tool in opposite directions and wallah.

Guilty of using the SAK wrong, thanks for the rundown! I'll probably stick with using my leatherman though for those occasions.

I use the knife on my Leatherman to score before using the stripper to pull the insulation.

Lets throw the Victorinox SpiritX in the comparison. The SpiritX has a V-notch and the round U-notch. The V-notch has nothing to counter against. Bute with the round U-notch you can hold and press the wire against the handle and use the scraper, which is right netxt to it, to score the insulation.

Is The Leatherman V-notch supposed to be sharp out of the box? I got my first Leatherman, a Rebar, a couple weeks ago and the V-notch is completely dull! I can't score any wire insulation using this method with my new Leatherman. Have you sharpened the V-notch? If so, how did you do it? Good video demonstration anyway, thanks.

Mine personally was sharp out of the box but it may be seller specific ╮(. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)╭ It was also just a standard wave, a 1999 one at that so... might be worth emailing leatherman some models might be different

Pre scoring works on larger gauge as you demonstrated but this video shows how effective it is on the gauge the tool seems designed for kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m8-citOEksfQYWQ.html. Hope it helps.

I think I've seen official Victorinox instructions illustrating the "wrong" way of stripping wires. I wonder if this was their intentions at the design level, or an afterthought years later

The critical thinker in me wonders whether this was the intended methodology from Victorinox or if this is simply its users/customers finding an alternative viable solution. Still good content/knowledge to disseminate, but a thought to keep in mind.
