Your extra twist through the split makes it look sooooo much better than everyone else's version. It also makes the braid/knot tighter and neater. Thanks for a great step-by-step.

You are so welcome and am glad you enjoyed our leather craft tutorial. There are so many neat things that can be made in leather. Although I have been making leather goods for close to half a century, I am still in awe of the many leatherworking skills I can still yet learn when I see the amazing handmade products that other crafters show on the internet. Here are some thoughts in an article of when I first started handcrafting leather goods: leathersmithdesigns.com/blogs/leather-craft-on-shoestring-budget/

@LeathersmithDesigns
@LeathersmithDesigns Жыл бұрын
With this type of weave, many people don't add anything else to secure the end. However, we add a rivet for a little extra security. However, you are correct, a chicago screw is much strong than a rivet and easier to replace than having to drill out a rivet. Sometimes when we use chicago screws on other projects, we might add a drop of thread Loctite threadlocker to prevent the screw from accidentally loosening. We also sell chicago screws (screw posts) at leathersmithdesigns.com/leather-fasteners-spikes-studs/

@@pankaj19800 Pankaj if you are in India, just find out where the leather tanners are and buy direct. However, the little pieces of hardware are best bought from specialty shops like in this video links. They are specialty items and may not match, so best to buy these from one store with customer support.

Very beautiful. What is the length of the slots and the distance between them?
@LeathersmithDesigns
@LeathersmithDesigns 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video. You can see what slot lengths work best for your leather. For the braided leash we made in the video, we used 9 oz thick leather and made the slots 2 1/2 inches long. On the dog leash clip end, we made the slots 1 1/2 inches apart. On the handle end, we made the slots 18 inches apart. You may want the handle on your leash to be smaller or bigger than we did depending on your preferences.

I put information on measurements for the slots in this article leathersmithdesigns.com/blogs/braided-leather-dog-leash-diy-/ . These are just the measurements and placements we used on the braided leather leash that we made with 8-9 oz leather. They work for us but you may try different measurements depending on how tight or loose you want the braid or on how big of a loop you want for the handle. We make different length leashes. I can't remember what length we made the leather leash in the video. For our 6 foot long leather leashes, we cut the leather 87 1/2 inches long before we assemble it. We use the sturdy flat swivel snaps on our leashes which you can see at www.leathersmithdesigns.com/swivel-snaps-leash-clips/

I have a dumb question: other than aesthetics, what other reasons to put braids on a leather leash?
@LeathersmithDesigns
@LeathersmithDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
There might be other reasons for braiding the leather leash end but my own understanding is 1. another style for aesthetics 2. an alternernative way to attach the clip and finish the handle without using rivets or sewing. Although it is not required in this type of braiding, I still like to hold down the end with a rivet.

Do you use bridle leather? Thanks for video!
@LeathersmithDesigns
@LeathersmithDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked our video. We make the long 6 foot leather leashes from vegetable tanned backs and the shorter lengths from vegetable tanned bends. We hand dye the leather, dip it in pure neatsfoot oil, polish it with a couple coats of resolene and finish it with some dubbin water repellent. It is not bridle leather as it is not stuffed with oil or finished with waxes from the tannery. Bridle leather would also make a beautiful leash. Here is an article on us doing the braid: www.leathersmithdesigns.com/blogs/braided-leather-dog-leash-diy-/

If you mean how long should the slits be in the leash, this is what I did in the video. I used 9 oz thick leather (9/64 inch thick) and cut all the slots 2 1/2 inches long with a utility knife. The slots can be shorter or longer depending on how tight or loose you want the braid to be. Is it ok to use braided leather for a large breed of dogs?
@LeathersmithDesigns
@LeathersmithDesigns Жыл бұрын
My personal feeling is the braided leather dog leash is just as strong as the unbraided leather dog leash. However, I have not tested them side by side to see if one is stonger than the other. I would suggest the 1 inch width as opposed to narrower for large breed dogs.

I'm sure this would probably be a good tutorial But you cover what you're doing too much with your hands. I understand you need to do what you're doing but for a tutorial, I wish you would try to keep your hands from covering what you're doing because I can 100% get the handle side of the lease no problem at all it looks great but I can't at all see what you're doing for the other end. Anyways off to look for a more clear video thanks anyways.🙂🤷‍♂️👍✌️
