Incredible job John. Any experienced hunter knows what you go through. It's hard enough to simply spot and stalk let alone film it. The community truly appreciates your hard work. Thank you and your friends and family for providing this fabulous video work. Happy holidays to you and yours.

I always look forward to your walks through the woods during PA rifle. Truly awesome to see what good property management can do for the herd. The number of deer you ran into is what I imagine when the old timers talk about what the “good old days” were like. Thanks for taking the time to bring us along!

Great video as always. I like the real sense of emotion which comes through in your videos. Real people! Our camp, like you and your crew use a combination of sitting and still hunting in the big forests of British Columbia, all depending on the whitetails and conditions. Falling in the creek, getting wet, getting hung up or wacked in the face by brush, well if you haven,t had this happen then you still have a ways to go on the quest to be a bush country hunter. About the shot. That is your call, you were there experiencing it first hand. The rest of us are watching an edited video on the 52 inch. Great video sequence, loved the tension and excitement but none of us has the right to a judgement.

While it’s a true bummer that over the past 5-10 years or so, the leatherwood gang hasn’t been where/what they once were w/ the whole gang or at least 80% of the guys tagging out w/ nice bucks, but I definitely am always happy when I see my homeboy Johnny do what he does best!! I wish Shane, Hunter, Trevor, Toth, and Smith would be in more content, but John will always be the glue that held this channel’s foundation together, bringing it success!! Thanks for the video and all your time, effort, dedication, and most of all “realistic information/tips” that you have provided to many of us, especially myself on my 10 year quest after a big NJ/NY buck!! Probably would have never pulled off harvesting the three 3.5-4.5 y.o. bucks I managed to harvest in recent years after many seasons of tag soup!! Thank you John!! Keep doing your thing and I would definitely not mind helping you out in the future whether for content, helping record you so that you don’t have to be multi-tasking, or trip assistance as well. Least I can do to help and learn more from the man who single handedly made me the hunter I am today, starting at age 17 when I first found this channel.

Thanks! Yeah its been a big change the last 10 years. Toth became a father this year and Shane had his second. It's just been tough with us all to hunt together anymore. We used to put every ounce of energy into archery and rifle but we just don't have the time. And when we do it's tough with the camera. Hopefully when kids get older some of the guys might get back into it.

That's the way it goes for me. If I'm hunting does, bucks show up. I had a spike show up and came within 5 yards of the tree that I was sitting in. I had taken a buck 2 days before and needed to fill a doe tag before going after buck #2. The spike spotted me in the stand, but couldn't make me out. The breeze was in my favor. It stood there and stomped, did head bobs and everything it could to get me to move. After a few minutes, he finally walked away down the hill. Not 10 minutes later, a 3 pointer did the same thing to me. I was whispering under my breath, "Go back in the thickets and bring out ya Momma!"

Now that life has dealt you a different hand and your time is limited- I’m grateful for what you do manage to get out. I know you have to balance home and outdoors, but I also know you’ll get out in late season with the smokepole. Filling a tag on this big buck with the flintlock, would be a blessing for sure. Make it happen. Thanks for putting out great homegrown content.

I remember back in the early 2000's ish right in the height of rifle season November in Missouri it got unseasonably Hot and it didn't even feel like deer season at all. So I drove my truck out into the middle of the CRP climbed up in the bed of the truck and sat my butt down on a beer cooler. I know don't judge, I wasn't drinking and hunting but that was the only thing I had to sit on. On top of not seeing a single deer, not even a doe and I wouldn't have shot a deer even if one came out. The horse flies were absolutely brutal and I finally went back to deer camp and broke into that cold beer cooler. That was one of the worst deer seasons that I can ever remember.

Its absolutely fun to walk em up,fun in a more engaging and adrenaline filled over traditional sittting! Even more so when you win of course! Ive done it with bow,gun deer and turkey plenty! Good times, still attempt still hunting too just not like i did in younger days. There are ways to spook less deer and win the game more inline with keeping them around to win more games imo! Sane game different methods though. Nice deer though. 140-150class ? Idk but beams looked long,4" brows,9" g2? 6" g4 on left? Nice 9 or does he have a g4 on left? Just talking lol or bsin with my opinion of deer and methods but that way is excitement when your in em. gg's

if its a legal buck to harvest in your state, up to you! What's up with the location, did you have permission where you shot the deer?

You boys never seen thick before. Come down to eastern North Carolina in the pine plantation clear cuts. Watch where you step now. We got fire ant mounds knee high, big diamond backs and briars that you will literally be picking out a month later(me right now) if your deer runs any distance. Come on back now ya hear!

Great job John, I can't imagine how hard it is to film and stalk, up and down the hills. I think it was asmart choice not to shoot, way to much "stuff" between you two, and if you happened to hit him, he may have run off and you may have not found him.

i see a lot of encouraging comments to this video but I have to keep it real. You had a shot, That was not that thick. i cannot believe you didn't shoot???

That was way to thick to shoot through and it would have been unethical and irresponsible to even try to do so... it only takes a twig in the wrong spot to deflect a bullet and alter where it impacts an animal...

Remember that when the camera is in manual focus, it can literally make branches dissappear. The camera is that good. From my angle I looked through my rifle several times. Trying to find a hole. Now, I could have took several steps to the left and maybe had a shot. But I doubt I would've gotten a half step before he bolted. I was taking my chances being partially conceled by the tree and letting the camera be exposed to my left. If he would've walked past that tree and stopped I would've shot in a heartbeat. But when he moved he did not stop.

Unless you were actually standing next to John during this encounter you don't know anything about what was available or not. The cameras give the viewer the illusion of a clear shot. Watch the video again see how far away the buck actually was. Tons of stuff the bullet could have struck on the way to the buck.
