Great picking pattern you’re doing, here. I’m about to play this song at my father Bill Staines’s celebration of life on Sunday, and he and Chris were very close friends for years. I always read this song as a loved one waiting up late for their significant other to get home from tour after a long drive, which I grew up seeing, with my Mom waiting until she saw my Dad’s headlights pulling into the driveway before she went up to bed. Good work with the cover. -Bowen

Thanks Bowen, I sure appreciate it. It’s funny you sent this, as I just listened to Chris’ version recently, and thought I’d like to actually learn it his way. But I’m not very adept with alternate tunings, and the to-do list grows ever longer. Maybe someday, as they say. Sorry about your father. I wasn’t aware of him, but just now spent some time scratching the surface. Quite a career, and great songs. Seems like he did things his way, and a lot of people loved him for it. Hard to beat that. I immediately recognized “Place in the choir” as I have little kids, and have heard various renditions. I had no idea he wrote it. Thanks again for the kind words, and for opening my eyes to your dad’s music. The best to you and yours in all you do. -Matt

I remember being in awe when I found out that Chris Smither was self taught. It kinda makes sense because his picking style is truly unique . I am in awe again. I also love the hat.

Great cover, Matt! Yeah, Smither has this style of plucking those strings that seem deceptive because he can simulate a bass line as well as hitting the higher notes. I'm glad you appreciate this song as much as myself. These lyrics are PRECIOUS! Thank you!

I've always loved this song... the melody, the message, everything about it. You do a great version of picking it in your own style, and you have a great voice!!! And...I love how you inserted your birth year in the last verse there and changed it up a bit to rhyme...lol 😂

That's a great take on that song. May have to cop that from you. :-). What brand of arch top? Sounds great! Reminds me of a Waterloo I played not long ago. Keep it up. Really enjoyed this!

It’s a Kalamazoo KG-21, which we’re made from 1935-1943. I think this is an early one based on the headstock and bridge. I haven’t been able to locate a serial number. It’s a cool guitar for sure. Thanks for listening, cop away!

Great cover! Could you post a tutorial or tabs to help beginers? I would like to learn this song the way YOU play it
@Midaddz1
@Midaddz1 Жыл бұрын
I’ll see what I can do, it’s been hard to accomplish much lately. It’s pretty straightforward, I’m playing out of D position with a capo on 5 strings at the 2nd fret, leaving the low E open. So basically drop E. Pretty much D, G and A. Thanks for listening!
