People complain that this episode has too many stories crammed into a single episode, but overall it actually works and makes logical sense. Honestly, Bumi's change was tough at first, but on second watch, it makes sense, a century of war would turn anyone bitter and hardened. It's an interesting approach but works well.

Exactly, years of war would make anyone rather cynical, bitter, and hardened. Bumi has had to make hard choices all throughout his reign as Omashu’s King.

honestly I agree with the choice to make him bitter rather than just goofy, but I don't like how they threw in the lettuce leaf as an extremely lazy reach to tie for the show, if you're going to use that joke, use the whole joke. lol they could have made his whole arc this episode better. but again I don't hate it as much the second time through as well.

Also in secret tunnel part. Love is brightest in the dark. In the animated the love representation they used was the love from couple (or supposed to be together like Aang and Karata) but in the live adaptation the representation they've chose was the love of siblings. It worked and made sense that love is in any form and can work both ways in the tunnel

I was "ugly crying" during the funeral scene. The Leaves from the vines makes the magic. And the acting was so good! The Irohs and Zukos line is SO good and gets even better, always hits hard. Katara is definitely very flat. She gets just a little better in the last episode, but stile cringe.

I think people may misunderstand what happened in the flashback. That wasn’t the Leaves from the vine episode we had from s2. That was the INITIAL loss/funeral. We are most likely getting a second one in TALES OF BSS..IF we get that. The scar-less zuko seems to be lost on people. He’s definitely worked into the role though…I expect a full song but it’ll never be Makos voice, and in honor of him we may not actually GET the song. The emotional strings they are pulling here tho work perfectly. We know what LFTV MEANS but it’s how they are building it up :) giving us backstory and context before the anniversary.

Great reaction overall and review on the positive and negative points raised, but Zuko choosing Aang over Iroh would definitely NOT be him. Heck, in 'the Storm' episode of the animated show, he doesn't choose to catch Aang over his own crew even. That is what makes Zuko great, even at his most villianous, he still has a modicum of moral compass.

Hey Avatar Meesh and Avatar Dee, how it been. I hope you two weekends were great. "Happy Monday!"This was a great episode as Aang and Iroh are prisoners of Omashu. I like how they reacted the moment that Katara freezing Jet. I like how we get a flashback of Iroh at the funeral of his son Lu Ten. It is interesting that we get an interaction with Iroh and Ozai. But we never got it in the animated series. I like that we got Leaves From the Vine. Katara and Sokka go through the secret tunnels only to stumble upon some carefree traveling bards Chong, Lily, Moku from the Cave of Two Lovers episode. Which was a hilarious and cool moment. We got the introduction of the Badgermoles. The interaction between Iroh and the Earh Nation soldier was interesting because I got his anger towards Iroh for losing his brother. It is sad because in war, there will always be casualties in which both men are similar positions because both he and Iroh lost a family member, too. My only issue with this episode is how they mishandled Bumi character. I like that we got Zuko and Iroh vs. the Earth Nation soldier fight in episode 7 of season one, which was great. As well Zuko making a decision earlier in the episode who to go after between his uncle or the Avatar which as well is a callback from episode 7. In which unfortunately leaves Iroh getting stabbed. As we get a flashback of Zuko being banished by his father with the fresh scar as the two begin the search for the Avatar. The Aang and Bumi fight was great as well. I just love the fight scenes of the show. But anyway I hope you two have a wonderful day. Stay safe, take care and stay amazing you two. I get the impression that the final scene is trying to place Bumi in the light where we see him in the animated show. So going forward he will be the crazy mad genius we all know and love. That's my prediction of what the creators seem to be going for, but they wanted the serious war torn king and they attempt to give him a small character arc that wasn't present in the animated show.

About the end: well, they changed it and didn't at the same time. The Zuko & Iroh stuff throughout the season is the best part of the show! All of the changes involving them work really well. The other changes are hit or miss for me. I keep seeing a lot of people thinking that the song the hippies are singing when Sokka and Katara enter the cave is an addition to the secret tunnel song, but it's not. I think this is because we're anticipating the Secret Tunnel song so much that we forget they had several other songs. I liked the changes to Bumi. It was always kinda weird to me that Aang didn't recognize him sooner with the same crooked eyes and snort. Also I don't think he ever actually intended for the fight to be "to the death." At least in my head, I like to think he would have earthbent himself down into the floor, or cracked the stone above himself to survive. I think he just wanted to try to teach Aang a lesson but wouldn't actually sacrifice his life.

Hi! By far, this is the most emotional and interesting episode so far. They have been able to combine various stories from different seasons very well, making them flow in a very organic way. Personally, I see a lot of sense in the construction they decided to give to Bumi, taking into account the more serious and solemn tone that the series has compared to the original cartoon. If he suddenly sees his friend alive after a hundred years, and also still a child, it is perfectly logical that he would be partly resentful and confused, since even if Aang did not voluntarily choose to lock himself in the iceberg for a century, that does not mean that was absent and abandoned the world to its fate. Furthermore, although the lessons it seeks to teach them are different from those of the cartoon, in my opinion they are more necessary and useful for the context: Aang is still just a very innocent child, so he urgently needs to learn what it means to be at war and its implications, since not all problems will be as easily solvable as racing with courier cars. I love your reactions, I can't wait for episode 5!!! Greetings from Argentina!!!

Utkarsh was fantastic as Bumi I thought. If he'd just portrayed the crazy old goofball from the cartoon I don't think that would have translated well to live action. I first saw him as a recurring guest on Critical Role last year and I was really impressed by him. Still some "wooden" acting moments from the kids but that's just kind of how it goes with child actors. Honestly though, these kids overall I think are better than say... the Harry Potter kids.

The only real "complaint" i have is that by far boomie's arc is done better in the animated series. I don't mind that they did it differently and i can appreciate it for what it is. But the whole thing about boomie was that none of his challenges made any sense at first. He wasn't there to teach Aang to earthbend or make tough choices, but to look at things from different perspectives and to be creative when coming up with solutions (which like the rest of the show should point to the end)

About your concern about new viewers not getting the impact of the Iroh and Zuko scenes I think the live action did a great job with conveying the bond between them. I watched it with my mom and aunt who haven’t seen the cartoon and they both got emotional during the funeral and the end on the boat. So I think the live action is able to stand on it’s own without relying on prior knowledge of the source material. *** Spoilers for anyone who hasn’t seen the cartoon *** Even with them showing how much Zuko loves his uncle early on I still think the betrayal later on is still believable. It’s one thing to prioritize Iroh when he’s injured and the avatar is still somewhat far away. It’s another to do it when he’s with his sister and being told he can have what he wants more than anything.

It’s ok if you like the funeral scene, but I think they ruined the whole theme behind it. You might say that the theme is there’s a cost of war and losses, and zuko is like his son figure. But the reason why this is better in season 2 is because of betraying iroh. Iroh felt like he lost his son again, and having those episodes fall closer together makes more sense. Same goes for the secret tunnel and how toph ran away and learned how to bend by meeting the badger moles in a tunnel.

I liked how subtle they were in making Shu a girl with a single pronoun change. It was subtle and it changed nothing to their story, but I'm sure means a lot for representation. And considering The OG Show creators struggles with Nickelodeon being inclusive with LGBTQ prior to 2010 and the cinematic atmosphere the show was created in of that era, it would have been hard for them to show a same sex couple then even if they wanted to. I'm willing to rewrite this as cannon in my head but it doesn't ultimately matter for me if people still still with the Shu being a guy from the og cartoon.

@@stormgirl09 I can respect story purists liking remakes to align with og content. I think why I love this change is because it was a single pronoun change from him to her. Their story otherwise was exactly the same. It didn't make it more special or less. Their love was still a beautiful tragedy. I think that has value in media because at least when I grew up Gay relationships were spectacles to be put on show and flamboyantly contrast the conservative side of the story. This was probably missed by so many yet the love remained. The value in the love being so equal it doesn't even register as different. I wish my generation had been capable of mainstreaming that concept. For those in the know, the last 10 seconds of Korra was so mind-blowing and so difficult to execute. Today, it wouldn't even register but I remember people crying at the representation letting that kind of love be seen on such a popular franchise. Change happens with continuous relentless effort to be seen and accepted. It pushes back when others say to be reasonable, and it requires people to be unrepentant in making a spectacle for the dream you want fulfilled to be publicly seen and supported. I grew up in a conservative religious background that did not tolerate "woke" anything let alone "the gays"! it took effort to open my eyes, and I needed every nudge to get me here. I can't imagine my current self holding the same views. This alteration, could have helped me when I was younger so I hope it can help others.

I think you missed that Aang was showing Bumi that he uses the carved rock Bumi gave him 100 years ago to "call a friend", Appa. He was reminding Bumi of their childhood friendship as if to say, "it hasn't really been 100 years for me. I'm your friend and you can rely on me, because it hasn't been 100 years for me at all and I haven't forgotten." Also, I think it makes sense to shift to Iroh and Zuko already having a closer bond here because they really have been at sea together for 3 years. I think it gives them more opportunities with the characters. I don't think you need to have the knowledge like an OG fan, because I think it creates a large moment of sympathy for Zuko. It get's new viewers invested into wanting to know what happened between Zuko and his father, and it answers why Iroh is with him. It also gives us a moment to discover that Iroh has committed an atrocity, or is at least perceived to be a butcher by other nations, but is seen as a coward by the Fire nation.

Cool of you like it but I think this adaptation blows. rarely did I find any changes superior. I find myself cringing and most parts that normally had my emotional.

Y'all REALLY need to quit constantly comparing this to the OG show. This is an ADAPTATION, and constantly expecting it to be 1:1 with the cartoon is going to lead to nothing but bitterness and disappointment. It was always going to be it's own thing, and it stands on it's own quite nicely. It's entirely unrealistic to expect them to keep everything totally the same, to hit the same story beats, and to not mix and match story points. These last two episodes are a perfect example. Mixing the Jet, Mechanist, and Bumi storylines all into two Omashu-centric stories makes perfect narrative sense, and leads to some great character development for the whole gang. The constant bagging on Katara is just one example. Her actress is doing a great job with the character, and is going out of her way to highlight Katara's softer, more vulnerable, side. She's working through the emotional trauma and baggage of Kya's death (given that we've seen it in flashbacks at least twice so far, it's clear that the writers/directors wanted us to focus on it), and will come out a much stronger person on the other side. "But she was much more fierce in the show" I hear you say. Yeah, and Sokka was a sexist, overbearing jerk. Noone seems to have an issue with them dropping the sexism and instead focusing on Sokka being overbearingly overprotective, and dealing with his emotional issues therein, but everybody is bitching because Katara isn't sassy. Both of them are dealing with stereotypical masculine/feminine emotional trauma in a fairly stereotypical way. Funny how people only get mad about the girl not going full gurrlboss. Gee...I wonder why that could be? I genuinely love your reactions, but the constant "they changed that' and "they did it different in the cartoon" stuff is really dragging your reactions down.

Yes it’s an adaptation, which means of course people are going to compare this to the original. It’s just natural, especially since they just watched the original series. They themselves have said *multiple times* that certain stuff won’t translate to live action and that they know things won’t be a 1 to 1 copy. That doesn’t mean they aren’t allowed to point out some differences/changes, EVERY reactor has done the same because again, it’s just natural when dealing with direct adaptations. Katara’s actress seems cool in interviews and a genuine fan of the show, but her portrayal of the character is just off. Everyone else is alright or genuinely good. Katara’s acting stands out as being subpar. Katara is a main character yet side characters with only a few lines give off more believable performances.

I get it why many people got disappointed with the tunnel scene coz it supposed to be Aang with Katara. But imagine the world today, post something "inappropriate" and people will cancel you. Imagine the criticisms they will get from casting children with a romantic scene. So for me the sibling love is the best choice they made.

Poor Bumi. I wanted to hug the poor guy throughout this. I felt so sorry for him. I mean, like, who WOULDN’T be like that after a century of war? Aang is still a child, still too young to fully comprehend the chaos and devastation of a Hundred Years War. Also…did Bumi go senile after so long? Seems like it.
