These are my personal hints and tips that work for me,I am sharing them to give you an idea of what could possibly work for you. I am not saying they are the best way or the way you should do them, please take that into account, there are many fantastic pilots doing such movies on KZfaq that may well work better than mine, what ever works for you is all that matters.
Marc.

I am a complete beginner. Just recently started ground handling at the beach after watching this terrific video and following Marks suggestions. This video has been responsible for getting my training wing up into the air above my head this afternoon (after spending a fair bit of time building a wall and playing with brakes and risers as Mark suggests) - much to my surprise - admittedly after a little fluffing about and pulling the wrong riser/brake numerous times! So great to see my wing overhead and actually flying. I don't think I've come across a clearer, more detailed video for a raw beginner - and I've watched many. So a a HUGE thank you Mark and Sian from this trainee PG pilot for literally getting my wing into the air! Thank you both for your great work with these super clear videos.

Man! I wish I watched this a long time ago. I struggled to understand how to grab the brakes getting into the reverse launch configuration with the result being a clean config when I spin around. There are so many different methods and websites to look for weather before flying. Can you please create a very simplified method how a newbie can review weather? Covering - paragliding maps free vs commercial websites and merits/demerits what all to check (direction of wind, knots, any other things) Lastly providing some readymade checklist for beginner pilots to start with?
@leavesleyaviation
@leavesleyaviation 2 жыл бұрын
There is no simple way at looking at just one weather site really, I check 4 or 5 each day for my students and try to build a picture myself for the following day. Were also lucky to have a weather stn on top of one of our best hills that gives wind speed and direction with a camera too. A big thing to remember is most weather sites wind speed is at sea level NOT hill level so you need to work out the height of your hill and get some practise in knowing how much to add to the forecast, ie when my local area forecasts say 10mph I double it and this is roughly what it will be on the hill top.

Very clear, excellent video! You are a good man! Suggestion: assuming strong wind conditions…when going to take “an hour break”, perhaps it would be a good practice to put the other tip of the wing under the other tip (the one you already had folded in your video) and the harness on top of both of them, in case the strong wind changes direction during your brake. Thanks very much for the great videos. I've enjoyed watching them. Its been hard finding nearby instructors so I find myself mostly ground handling every day instead of flying. I know that will pay off down the road anyway. The other day, I was ground handling with fairly strong gusty winds. I was doing pretty well facing forwards and doing wingtip touches and recoveries. But a couple of times, I felt the wing drop back some, I released all brake pressure completely, but I still got dragged backwards. Any troubleshooting ideas to prevent this?

Thanks tom, it's so hard to say without seeing the situation buddy but your spot saying it will pay off in the end. Ground handling is the key. ps, if the wing is an older wing they do tend to hang back and fall back more than a crispy newer wing so it could be that.

@@leavesleyaviation Thanks for the reply, Marc. I got back out there some and I think I've found the problem. As the wing goes back, it felt to me as though it was a lot further back in the power window than it actually was. So, thinking it was about to drag me backwards into the street, I pulled the brakes to kill the wing, but that just pulled it further down into the power window and would really start pulling me backwards. Whereas, in reality, the wing hadn't really dropped that far back and what I needed to do was really lean forward and get as much weight in my chest as possible, and perhaps let the wing pick me up a little and "pendulum" backwards under the wing. It was more my perception that the wing was further back than it was, and my reaction to it was probably helping to make that my actual situation. Thought I'd share my self-assessment as it might help someone else.

Great video Marc! These are helping remember so much as we’ve not been able to fly for a few months. Is the field your in available for students to practice GH without being up on the hill? I really want to get my wing out (finally) and have a practice GH in a flatter area to build my confidence for when I’m on the hill (this is Jess Clarke btw) 😊

Heah jess, no that field was the farmers that let me use it just for the day because it was too windy on the hill to film. Not long now I don’t think🤞🙏🪂
