Folks from red states think the difference between their state and CA is like night and day. Having lived in CA and TX, I can tell you they're not all that different. The big cities are all flaming liberal, and the rural counties are all conservative (thank God for Texas' 254 counties vs California's 58). CA has Pelosi, TX has Beto and the Castro brothers. CA has high income taxes, and TX has high property taxes and fees. CA was Republican until the nineties, TX was Democrat until the nineties; they both show influences of the previous parties. The one thing TX has on CA is a respect for the 2nd Amendment, which is what I hope is bringing a lot of Californians to Texas.

Born, raised, in California. Spent my youth on the beaches. Could have taken over the folks' house. But, as a frequent visitor, it was clear the entire L.A. area had turned into a 3rd world nightmare! It was so nice 25 years ago, and has become truly ugly today. Filth, decay, homeless, traffic, almost everywhere outside of one of those exclusive zip codes. Even 25 years ago there were days you were warned not to go into the water due to e-coli. Now, just imagine where all that human waste, used needles, etc. , power washed off the sidewalks goes ... into the storm sewers, into the L.A. River, and out into the ocean!

I lived in California (SF Bay Area) from the late 1996 until 2012. Worked in the tech industry as a software engineer and then entered into management. Despite having a high tech salary, the place was outrageously un-affordable. Housing in the area I rented was massively expensive. Despite my area having a median salary of around $97,000 (my salary at the time was $136,000), the median house price was just over $1 million. So a ratio of 10 to 1. I rented for the duration of my stay and to keep costs down, I lived in one bedroom apartments for the majority of the time. Eventually, after seeing how classmates of mine were living in other areas of the country and could afford very nice homes despite having lower salaries than mine, I finally opted to move out of state. And it has been one of the most cathartic experiences. I now own (fully own, no mortgage) a 2700 sqr foot house in a beautiful community that cost me less than $400,000 here but would be upwards of $2 million where I used to live. But the real eye opener was discovering that when you factor in taxes and other costs, even my lower salary where I live now provided me more after tax income than my high salary did in California. Now why is this problem so pervasive in California? Simple. Insufficient supply and too much demand. But the elephant in the room is the lack of supply is 100% self inflicted. It is due to the copious anti-development and government regulations in place in California that made housing construction very difficult. Zoning new land in California for development is nigh impossible due to the extensive environmental regulations. And getting permits for construction for buildings larger than two stories is a massive chore due to the earthquake threat. The end result is precisely what you are seeing here. The state is now not affordable and people are either living in their cars or on the street, or they opt to move elsewhere. Like I did. Sadly, I think at this stage the situation is too far gone for an effective resolution. The politics are too entrenched and people are simply fed up. The end result is an exodus of the middle class. This will have dire consequences for California in the coming decades. Once businesses realize they cannot hire the personnel they need to run things, they will opt to move to other states. This has already been happening and will accelerate. The government will move too slowly to compensate for the exodus and the erosion of the middle class will create a very disconnected situation whereby you will have the uber rich and then everyone else.

California's so called "booming economy" is because of the huge amount of money coming from the state and federal government. In fact, Obama and Hillary visited San Francisco 27 times to fund raise and they'v e been sending back billions in federal funding for politically connected donors. This is totally unsustainable and the phony economy is going to crash big time just like in 2008.

Switzerland here: This is a VERY good explanation of Switzerland. You could really say, California is run like Switzerland in a lot of ways. There's a lag in homelessness, but this country is catching up fast. Our effed up liberal city Basel just decided to allow begging (by government implanted illegals, who get placed by a Mercedes, have iPhones, etc.), longer hours for disturbances and noises in neighborhoods, and even more effed up: people allegedly voted YES for that. Since Trump has started talking about voter fraud, I seriously can't stop asking myself anymore, if these vote results here PRO more waste, more homelessness, more noise, more division, REALLY is the result of voter manipulation ... I know since the early 90s that Switzerland was infiltrated, but I couldn't point my finger at what it was. It's now obviously CLEAR. Oh, and don't forget: you guys are lucky to have gotten rid of Obamacare, because this sh*t has been implemented here in Switzerland in 1997. Pure rip-off. A family of 3 pays around $800-$1000 a month of premiums. My retired parents pay around $1600 A MONTH - just because they are OLD and a 'higher risk'. And it's mandatory! And who brought that shit? Our liberal sociopaths. High salaries are of no worth, when they rip you off from all sides with hidden taxes, fees et al. We can't save. It's a month to month living. You get higher salaries so otherwise they couldn't rip you off. And I absolutely shake my head at my fellow Swiss always chanting "We're still better off than other countries." Blind. We never had homelessness. Never saw any of that while growing up in the 70s/80s. My parents could buy a 5 BR condo, take us to Greece once a year for vacation, pay taxes on ONE months' salary, my dads' employer paid 13 months of salary plus another month of gratification/bonus. Health insurance was voluntary and cost for a family almost nothing. Switzerland has been infiltrated by the marxist sociopaths, I now know. And to me the big turn around started in 1993. The government here is a mess on all levels. We're facing the same shit everywhere. It's time to remove ANY sociopaths from office. When liberals speak about helping in an area, you know exactly, that that is the exact next area, where they bring detonation. There ARE good things in Switzerland, no doubt. I can see that and appreciate that. But these are all areas, that do not help make lives easier for the average Swiss people, like Tourism, public transportation. Reallyawful

It's not just individuals and families that are leaving but businesses are leaving as well. That means the tax base is getting smaller and there is less and less work available. Then, when you consider the taxes are getting higher and higher that is a big turn-off. Thing is, the citizens of the state don't get much from the taxes. The main industry for economic support in California is the tech industry. If that starts to leave the state will not be in good shape. As California is a "sanctuary state." This means the homeless population especially in the major cities are smaller cities on their own. As more and more homeless are coming to California and be without jobs and income money to care for them will have to come from somewhere. That means taxes on those already here working will have to be raised. Problem with that is that is as people and jobs will be leaving the middle class tax base will not be able to support the state. Where will this lead?

I can relate to enjoying being out in nature by yourself, its both very calming, the nearest thing to being able to meditate, while still being able to walk around. I still live in southern CA, I would describe it as a beach town that was never meant to be bigger then Ocean Beach, Here are some of my thoughts on southern CA 1. I have worked a variety of jobs here and never once made nearly enough money to afford even the smallest studio apartment in the low cost areas, its expensive, like crazy expensive. We got people living out of their vehicles here. 2. People who move to San Diego move here for emotional reasons (beach, weather), but they leave for practical reasons like a job or being able to buy a house 3. It has variety, but never takes itself that seriously, and that speaks to the beach town mentality. That is why people here rave about the weather and Mexican take out. For example, we do not have any great sport teams, but people live here because they can ride their bike or surf 12 months out of the year, not for the team sports. 4. SD is an ideal city, if you are looking for a new city to move to, even if you do not know anyone, because you can show up and just spend the day walking around down town or the beach. Whereas in alot of other USA cities, are too cold, too hot or are simply not built for casually walking around. I suspect SD is a popular city for people who want to just go off, and do things by themselves. 5. All the things I just listed, makes SD a melting pot of people, with no connection to anyone else here, as if the whole city is just hanging out until they move away (as many do) or go to the beach, again. All those people who are renting a room in a house, are not thinking about starting a family, they are thinking how much longer till they can get their own place, or will they end up having to move.

Born and raised in San Diego California. Worked four jobs just to break even. Left with my family in '91 and moved to Michigan. I quickly realized I would take the worst California has over the best Michigan ever had. Now I live in Florida thank God!

I'm in Canton, Ohio. Back in the early 80's two of my friends moved their families to California. One was an engineer in the aviation industry, the other was a semi-truck driver. They both bought affordable homes. Property values went up as well as property taxes. Around 10 years ago, they sold their homes for far more than what they had bought them for and left California with a substantial amount of money. One moved to Arizona and bought a home. The other and his wife moved back to Findlay, Ohio and bought a nice home and both still money left over. California is a classic example of what happens when run by democrats, and now they are experiencing a mass exodus of Californians and businesses leaving and taking California's high income tax source of revenue with them.

As a conservative woman born and raised in southern California, in my experience, it's often the people who move TO California who are the REAL liberals. Often my most liberal acquaintances and former colleagues over the years have been from out of state (Ohio, New York, Connecticut, and Indiana, just to name a few). Many (most?) of us leaving are fed-up conservatives who've realized "Californian dreamin'" has become a nightmare. The state continues to pass laws that are not family or small-business friendly and the "sunshine dollars" we get paid are not worth never being able to afford a home (seriously, housing prices are a JOKE!) or build a legacy for our children and grandchildren. My husband and I can't wait to leave (God willing) next summer.

I lived in Hawaii for 37 years before moving to Northern California 12 plus years ago due to Hawaii's over-population and high cost of living. We found NorCal (short for Northern California) to be much more affordable and yet we do not get any snow in the winter. Yes almost 200 K more state residents left California last year than moved into it but it still leaves 34 million residents and another 5 million (at least) illegals (95% from Mexico). Our 600 thousand dollar 5 bedroom, 3 bath two story home in a gated community that has a pool, pool house, playground, large park and a small lake inside it's boundaries would cost a couple of million in Hawaii so we are very happy to be here. I am a novelist and I have written and completed 13 novels since moving here 12 years ago. StocktonRob

It looks like you are from Stockton. I found this with a simple google search: "Stockton was rated by Forbes in 2009 as America's fifth most dangerous city because of its crime rate. In 2010, mainly due to the aforementioned factors, Forbes named it one of the three worst places to live in the United States."

#1 Problem from which sprout most other problems in California is the price of housing. It just doesn't leave enough to live on unless you have 12 working people sharing one house. The guy in the video said their property taxes were $7,200 a year. Taxes are capped at 1% of sale price plus 1% increase per year. That means they paid $720,000 or so for their house! No wonder they were having a struggle.

Ok on one hand who can blame them? Hey I’m one of many who have left another bastion of liberalism, the people’s republic of massachusetts, that I was forced to leave due to health issues, so I could retire, only due to the fact my taxes an insurance had reached a level after continuously being raised over 20 years, on our dream house we built after three previous homes. So we left and went to Sunny/rainy Central Florida! Were we go around like two kids, amazed at how less the cost of living is down here! My taxes and insurance, are less than just my taxes were! Not to mention NO HEATING BILLS! Plus even though everything in our new home is electric, and in mass we had only lights and refrigerators and one dehumidifier, our electric bill was higher! Without AC! Now we have Central HVAC, and all LED lighting, for LESS! The people are wonderful, even though we live in a 55+ Gated Community, where most are from out of state. But the only feeling I get from the friendly locals is how they are worried how we will vote! It seams like over the years too many loyal liberal democrats have left the mess they helped create behind, but then come down here, without learning their lesson! They still go and vote for the name with a D next to it, while having absolutely no idea who they are, other than demoncRat! Back in mass, even though I’m a Veteran, have never been in trouble, knew the Police Chiefs in all neighboring cities/towns, there was NOWAY I could get a Concealed Carry License, but here in Florida I had mine in two months! Plus the wife and I took the Sheriffs course, got to meet who I feel is the best Sheriff in America, Sheriff Grady Judd, who has been in National news, telling folks that if you feel the need to come into Polk County, with the intent on breaking in to, or invading one of our citizens, he hopes you are able to Blow Them right Out of your window! I know it’s the same way with the folks leaving californication! No one else wants their voting habits!

I was in L.A. back in the mid 1980's , man is was beautiful, a tourist dream. Or it was so for myself. So when I retired in 2015 we decided to take a cruise on the west coast, WOW what a change, when we flew into the airport and went outside the smell hits you, when you drive through to the ports the sights horrify you. I was thinking how could anyone allow this to happen. Please don't bring this with you if you decide to leave California. Please Please Please

They didn’t mention that often those cutting edge tech companies have to subsidize their new employee’s housing requirements by purchasing apartment/condo communities and allowing their employees to live there at reduced rates. Either that or pay them far more so that they can survive. California is a beautiful money pit...and you can’t eat scenery.

I grew up in So, Calif, but I finally moved out of the liberal state and mod to a red state in 2010, away from illegals, minorities, expensive housing, traffic and unemployment. My new 9 years old house cost less than 25% of my house in Calif.

I've done home care in and around SF and Daly City as i was surprised at the amount of people that are packed into 1,2 and three bedroom homes....And I'm not sure that most people realize that as they ogle the homes, past those walls live extended families literally stacked on one another...My wife works for a large property management firm in the downtown of SF and she says there are six people in two bedroom apts....crazy!!

California has great weather, beaches, and a lot of high paying jobs. But it is very expensive, and the people leaving are the ones who don't earn enough to live here comfortably. The cost of housing in many other states is half the cost in California. The exodus is economic driven.
