I Love Larry more than anyone else. But I think the only logical GOAT talk is by position. Larry was the GOAT at small forward. But he wasn't the GOAT at center, power forward, shooting guard or point guard. Nor can he be expected to be. But saying he was a better player at small forward than Wilt or Kareem was at being a Center is an apples to oranges comparison.

@@clevelandbci9562 I’m not biased to the Celtics, I would never pick Bird over Jordan or Magic, ever, that is because they are my bias, my fav and my top 2. But if you ask me, who would be the greatest, Larry Bird without any doubt, not even LeBron can compete with Jordan, and Larry Bird gave both of my favourites a hard time, Magic even had Kareem and Jordan eventually beaten everyone but Bird.

LOL. I Larry as much as the next white guy. But nobody, I mean nobody was as good of all-around player as Jordan. MJ was an elite scorer and defender. He was quick, the most ethletic player and he always wanted the ball with the game on the line and always would back it up. only weakness people use is could he gaurd a big man in the low post. I say yes he could. But Bird is a top all time imo.

It's a pick 'em between Bird and Magic. Both excelled at almost everything and had a sixth sense for court awareness that hasn't been replicated since. They made their teammates better by finding unique ways to get them the ball. Jordan had less court awareness but had athletic ability that hasn't been replicated since. Man, I miss old school basketball. :(

This is not before Jordan, Bird beat Jordan 17-11 in the regular season, and 6-0 in the playoffs. Jordan hated Bird because he couldn't beat him. Bird has the 2nd highest win% in the history of Basketball (Magic was #1), the last player to win MVP in 3 *consecutive* years, and the first ever to make 50-40-90.

Seriously, if you guys want to get into NBA you couldn't have picked a better starting point. Bird played during the golden age of basketball. When you watch his videos, you'll see Magic, Jordan, Kareem, Hakeem, Dominique, Pippen, Isiah and the Bad Boy Pistons and more. Basketball back then is just so much more fun to watch. You'll also see how much more physical the game was back then, and how much more team oriented, and the different style of play. (You may also be surprised at just how many people who watched multiple eras will put Bird ahead of Lebron. 👍😊)

I've been an NBA fan since the mid 1970's and coached youth basketball for years. My personal top 5 are: 1. Michael Jordan, 2. Larry Bird, 3. Magic Johnson, 4. Kobe Brant, 5. Julius Irving. I’ve seen everyone over the last 45+ years. IMO, these players had the best BALANCE of FG%, FT%, clutch play, great offense, great defense, makes teammates better, great team play, shares the ball, passing ability, finishing, coachable, high basketball IQ, finds a way to win, has all areas of the basic fundamentals down pat, seeks high % shots first, knows where teammates are on the court at all times, able to score while being fouled, played against tougher competition, played against great defenses. No one today (not even Lebron, and that he flops brings down his value) has ALL of these attributes. To me, only Michael Jordan and Larry Bird have ALL of these attributes. Though today's players have a lot of talent, most players lack most of these attributes and no one has all of them. Defense and team play aren’t nearly as good today as in the 80’s/90’s. Great video. You guys did a good job.

Larry Bird was 34 -11 vs Jordan. Bird also 6-0 vs Jordan in the playoffs. Both coaches often switched up and had Jordan guard Bird vise versa .You can literally watch them play head to head. Watch the videos titled: How Larry Bird Schooled Michael Jordan. Larry made Jordan look like Everyone else.. Also check out the games for yourself. Do a little research on Bird,Jordan and that whole era of Basketball and you will see why people consider Bird and Jordan the best of the best. All in all it is a team sport so it is a silly argument. In my Humble Opinion, Larry Bird was the whole package.

There was no answer for him affecting the outcomes just by being in the building. His game wasn't about dunks, super teams or the money. His was about winning and making opponents look foolish along the way! Im not trying to disrespect you guys, but I definitely witnessed some. Good day sirs

How many other players have you seen that told their opponents what the play was and where they were going to shoot from before the play even happened. Byron Scott describes it the best. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/npiZrKlmyc3NeaM.html Additionally, Bird accomplished all this while playing hurt his entire career, the worst of it playing with a bad back after, get this, shoveling gravel while building a driveway at his mothers house. The crazy thing about Bird is that unlike most of the all-time basketball greats, whose style tended to match the style of the era, Bird was one of the all-time greats despite the physical defense and inside grinding style working against him. Imagine poor Shaq trying to play with today's "looked at me wrong" fouls and flopping. He'd be fouled out in the first quarter (a fault of the soft rules, not Shaq in my view). But Bird would be ruling the league and playing better than ever. He would be unstoppable.

I'm a lifelong fan of the NBA, I'm 61, let me break down Larry vs. LeBron. LeBron has better physical attributes. Larry is a better shooter, better passer, has better court vision, a higher basketball IQ, better motor( constant movement). He out hustles LeBron, he was more dedicated to the game, he had more heart, he dove and faught for more loose balls in one season than LeBron has in his whole career. He played in pain and faced a tougher league and style of play. Most important, Larry is the greatest clutch shot ever! He played with no fear! If they played against each other in their primes, Larry would trash talk LeBron till he quit and take LeBrons lunch money like the school bully and send him crying to his coach. Ooh yeah, Larry's 3 CONSECUTIVE MVPs beat out the likes of Micheal, Magic, Akeem, Moses, Kareem ECT. In todays soft NBA Larry's would be a 35 13 10 average easily. ( His 60 point game was made with only one 3 pointer)

Larry Bird and Earvin "Magic" Johnson came into the NBA together in 1979. This was back when the league was struggling had no national television deal for live games,( they were tape delayed) and was about to go broke. Those men hoisted the NBA onto their backs and brought it into the light of live television. They set the table for Michael, Kobe and those who followed after them, they started the international fervor that is the NBA today. Oh they faced each other in the NCAA championship in March of 1979, Magic won and was named Most Outstanding Player for the tournament. Larry Bird in the game against the Pacers suffered a broken cheek, and a concussion came back to play with those injuries and had double vision as well, yet still came out and put the team on his back and took them to the win. That is who he was, and how he played. You wont see that today ever. Just sayin...

I watched Larry's spectacular career and his whole story seems like something out of a movie. Yes, there is "Hoosiers", but it's about a coach and an underdog team that he leads to greatness. Larry's story is about "the greatest Hoosier" and how he came to be known as Legend. A shy, small town boy from a basketball hotbed state like Indiana practices for hours and hours, working on skills he'd use to pack overflowing crowds into his high school gym game after game. Then he takes his relatively unknown, undefeated, mid-major team to the NCAA title game before going on to a legendary NBA career that was defined by his amazing set of skills, unmatched ability in the most clutch moments and a work ethic that was second to none. Larry grew up at a time, like others of his generation, when there weren't fancy basketball camps for kids to attend to improve their skills. He did it by practicing for countless hours. Just good old hard work that would lead to his now famously-known work ethic. Since high school he was known to begin every morning with 500 jump shots. He also had to hit 99 free throws in a row or he would start over. It's not coincidental at all that he led the NBA in free-throw percentage four times. He more than made up for not having the natural athletic ability of many of his opponents by being the most mentally and physically prepared player and by giving the greatest effort. Some fans are awestruck by quick, high-flying players and their over-the-top athleticism. I don't think it's a coincidence that the first NBA slam dunk contest took place in '84-85 which was Michael's rookie season and Dominique's third. Sure, it's hoops eye candy, but it doesn't count for any points. The ball still has to go in. Larry wasn't very athletic by NBA standards, but he averaged 24-10-6 over a 13-year career. He took the Celtics from a 29 win team the season before he arrived in Boston to a 61 win team his rookie year, and that was before McHale, Parrish, DJ and Ainge joined the team. The 60+ win seasons would happen five more times in the '80s, as we'll as three 55+ win seasons. Larry led the Celtics to five finals appearances in seven seasons ('81-87), including three championships. In those five finals he averaged 23-12-6, including a near triple-double in the '86 finals when he averaged 24-10-9 for what many consider to be the greatest team in NBA history. From '84-86 he won three consecutive MVP awards, joining Bill Russell and Wilt as the only players to have accomplished this and he did it at time in the league when there was Kareem, Magic, Worthy, Isaiah, Laimbeer, Michael, Julius, Moses, Barkley, Dominique, Drexler, Bernard King, Hakeem and Sampson among others. Larry didn't just put up great numbers in the regular season. In 164 career playoff games he averaged 24-10-6 matching his regular season career average. He was also 6-0 against Michael in the playoffs. It's often been said that Michael won the battle, but Larry won the wars. However, after the first game he played against Michael, Larry told Dan Shaughnessy, who covered the Celtics for the Boston Globe in the 1980's, "That guy is gonna be the greatest player ever, you watch.' Larry was selected to the All-NBA first team in each of his first nine seasons from '79-80 to '87-88 and made the All-Star team 12 times, the only absence being in '88-89 when he played in just the first six games of the season due to season-ending surgery on both of his heels to remove bone spurs. All twelve of the players who were on the '89-90 Eastern Conference All-Star team (Larry, Isaiah, Michael, Barkley, Ewing, Parrish, McHale, Dumas, Dominique, Reggie, Scottie and Dennis) are in the Hall of Fame, with nine of them being selected to the NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1996 and eleven of them being selected to the NBA's 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2021. Eight of the players who were on that year's Western Conference All-Star team (Stockton, Magic, Worthy, Hakeem, David Robinson, Karl Malone, Drexler and Mullin) are also in the Hall of Fame and are on both the 50th Anniversary team and 75th Anniversary team. Considering the incredible talent that Larry played against, his accomplishments are even more impressive. Larry had the NBA's first 50-40-90 season in '86-87, shooting .525/.400/.910 and improved on it the following season shooting .527/.414/.916. He also won three consecutive three-point contests, the only ones he competed in. He is undeniably one of the most clutch shooters in NBA history with a nearly unmatched work ethic, and he often played hurt. Charles Barkley once said, "Larry Bird can't run or jump because that was God's way of keeping the game fair." Maybe he's right because can you imagine a player with the basketball IQ and mastery of fundamentals that Larry had in an athletic body like Michael's or Dominique's?

Bird literally defied all logic. He was slow, unathletic, but his basketball IQ, and ridiculous level of skill enabled that unathletic hick from french lick to win 3 straight league MVPs, all during the same time as magic, and the showtime Lakers, the bad boys pistons, and Jordan's bulls present in the league 🤯. One of my favorite quotes from players who played against Bird was James worthy. Worthy said "I would much rather guard Michael Jordan than Larry Bird, because when you play against Bird you have to play the game as a thinker, you had to get inside his mind". That should give you a pretty good idea what type of player Bird was especially coming from a hall of famer like James worthy.

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, Larry's game reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, baseball, track & Field, soccer, poker, & strategic chess in his head, and that's what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched!

There’s video footage of LeBron James stating his top three starting with Larry Bird Michael Jordan and Dr. J. There will never be somebody with his core awareness he knew where people were going to be before they even knew themselves it was in sane Celtic Laker matchups back in the 80s and 90s was also a pleasure to watch Great reaction fellas

My all-time starting 5 always starts with Bird and MJ, in that order. Bird won 3 league MVPs in a row. Only Russell and Wilt did that and they are both centers. 6-0 vs. Jordan in the playoffs. Maybe the best shooter ever in the NBA. 10 boards a game all career. Prolific passer, and I mean goat material in that category. He was almost 6'10".

His rookie year was '79-80 and Jordan was drafted in '83. There are interviews with Michael talking about Larry. When they were on the dream team they were all gambling in Michael's or one their rooms and they all had to leave to play a game and maid came into clean the room and said they just left like over $10,000 on the bed as the story goes apparently. I do know for a fact though Michael likes to gamble and basically can afford it as he has a never ending cash flow lol. I love Larry but Michael is still my hero just cause I'm partial to him growing up in Chicago. Got to watch him take us to 6 championships and it just brings back my whole childhood. After winning the championship being a kid and lowering my neighbor's hoop so we could dunk and trying to jump across the driveway imitating Jordan's free-throw dunk lol.

Living in Cleveland as a Cavs fan and a 1980s Laker's fan, where Bird was pretty much hated but respected. Larry is by far the 2nd best player that I have ever seen. Only MJ might have an edge. He was basketball and they don't get anymore dedicated & clutch than him.

I remember well Larry's retirement ceremony. One thing I remember like it was yesterday Magic wore Larry's #33 jersey under his Lakers warm up jacket. He unsnapped his jacket and showed Larry and the two men had a good laugh and a huge hug. Larry and Magic were fierce competitors on the court and great friends off the court. Magic told Larry, " Damn I'm going to miss playing you, you challenge me in ways no other player can. You make me step up my game every time we meet".

Comparing Larry to Luka or Dirk is like comparing Patrick Mahomes to Robert Griffin. In both cases, the only common denominator is skin pigment. Lots of people compile their dream starting 5, but don't choose a player from each position. For example, they will select both MJ and Kobe. Assuming I can only select players at their natural position, or a position they're suited to play, here's my starting 5: PG: Magic SG: MJ SF: Larry PF: Bill Russell (career played at center, but could play the 4) C: Kareem caveat: I could just as easily choose Wilt as my 5, and wouldn't blame anyone for making that choice. Kareem gets the nod in my book, thanks to his longevity, scoring record, and rings. If I had to select a 2-deep roster, the backups would be: Isaiah Thomas Kobe Lebron Tim Duncan Wilt

Yes!!! This is being done in the '80s. That's why many of us say THIS the greatest era of basketball. Bird and Magic saved the league, Jordan raised the bar... and then I can barely tolerate it now. It was the beauty of the game. The emotions it brought out of you. Friends were friends but TEAMS were teams. As Bird and Magic would say, (Para phrase) "They're trying to take something I want"
