When I was in the Navy in the barracks, I chose the bunk closest to the huge wall fan that ran 24/7. I loved it, I could sleep through world war III.

Dang! I'm gonna guess it was some kind of industrial fan with the speed control on the side of the motor housing. However, I ended up imagining it was one of certain models of KDK/Panasonic fans (primarily the metal-bladed models sold in Southeast Asia that were manufactured some time around the 70s and 80s, and I imagined one of the models that was released 1977) that had a distinctive sound when running on high speed. That distinctive sound is what I can describe as a constant C# that kinda sounded tinny. I don't know why, but I really seem to like that sound.
@dj330366 жыл бұрын
Well, this was an old barracks that was built during World War II. It literally filled the whole wall from floor to ceiling. It was belt driven, with the motor on the floor on one side and a big wire cage surrounding the whole fan. No air conditioning in that South Texas heat haha. I lived there for about six months before we were moved into a more modern barracks and this place was torn down. VT-23 N.A.S. Kingsville Texas

I can never sleep in complete silence. The rustle of the bed sheets, traffic & birds outside, even my own breathing & heartbeat all keeps me awake. So I have a big fan running on low just to create a little background noise, the advantage of a large fan is there is no tonal noise witch would get in my head after a while. Takes me a hell of a lot more than 60 minutes to fall asleep though.

I tend to sleep worse when I am in a job, and the worst I had was going nearly 60 hours straight without a single second of sleep and going back to work two more shifts in that time. I only just stopped short of hallucinating at work in front of customers, and amazingly.......I made no mistakes! I used to be able to sleep with the bedroom windows open at night, but no chance these days due to bad neighbours slamming car doors, dogs barking, lunatics speeding on nearby roads with music pumping out, car and house alarms going off, emergency vehicles and so on. Modern life is terrible for your physical and mental health.

Great review! I'm a night shift health care worker. I've slept with a fan noise since childhood. I struggle without it. I'm moving to a much busier street with older windows on the home, and I'm tired of stepping around a box fan all the time. This is a great solution and I appreciate the comparisons between 'real' fans and the noise machine. The power usage comparison was never anything I considered, but is certainly a huge bonus. Thanks for taking the time to make this video and share with everyone! I'm ordering myself a device right away.

My tinnitus becomes deafening without background noise. It is the worst kind of tonal noise(for me it is a high C note) that I can hear more and more the longer I sit in silence. It gives me a physical headache, and I have to have a TV or something going or I will just lay wide eyed all night fighting insanity.

The small speakers makes it sound tinny and unrealistic, which is why I never liked these. Thankfully, I have an air purifier to create pure soothing white noise, while also having the benefit of cleaning the air. For $50 it's better to just get a portable desk air purifier than this, especially if you intend to use it all year round and not just the summer. It won't have all those other noises, but you only really need the fan white noise to relax and sleep.
@armanelgtron45336 жыл бұрын
Tinny? Personally I thought it sounded like it had too much bass...maybe I'm listening through the wrong speakers.
@racers1155 жыл бұрын
If you heard it in person you wouldn't call the sound coming out of it tinny by any means. This is a true tuned system and like the bose effect, can produce low soundwaves despite it's small size. Another thing to keep in mind that this unit pulls just a fraction of the electricity of what either a desk air purifier. If it's something you are using every night for at least 8 hours per night, then yeah that can add up in the electrical bill. Also this is very easy to throw in a suit case when you are traveling which cannot be said for most desk size air purifiers.

I have the Lectrofan Micro, and it's great when I'm traveling. At home I have a HEPA air cleaner running all the time so I've gotten used to having the sound of a fan in the background. When I travel I've found I miss that sound - especially in places like motels where there might be more traffic noise, the sound of other people coming and going, etc. The Micro has fewer sounds, but there's one I really like and that's all I need. ;) The Micro also has a built in rechargeable battery, so it doesn't absolutely need to be plugged in to work.

I think living solutions was living accents in 2008 when I got a 12 inch box fan for $20 at an Ace hardware. I still have that fan and use it every night 365 days a year. About every 6 months to a year, I thoroughly clean the fan and oil the bearings. The casing isn't in the best of shape as there are several cracks around the screw holes and several plastic spokes are missing. I never thought it would last 10 years. My brother got a living solutions fan that has the same plastic shell molding as mine on the back, but it's different in the front.

I got a 'LectroFan about a year ago to replace a fan I used to have in a corner of my bedroom just for the noise. My favorite part is how easy it is to travel with... just throw it into a bag, and you can completely replicate the exact same sound experience from home anywhere (this was never really possible with the rather large fan I was using). It's also easier to clean and isn't an ugly eyesore (I never used the fan for its air moving abilities). I tried smart phone apps for doing this, but I never liked the ones I found.. they had terrible interfaces or were clearly using short recordings... my brain would pick these out and instead of sleeping, I'd get distracted listening for the end of the loop.

Those smart-phone apps are pretty good these days. I have used the same one on my Samsung tablet (which always sits beside my bed, anyway) for a few years. You can program the 'perfect' sound to help you sleep by mixing from a range of about 30 different sounds (running water, forest birds, wind, rain, beach waves, violin, etc.) The sound from my tablet is crystal clear for this type of noise (not much low frequency sounds) and it's a few years old, so newer devices probably have even better sounds. I can still see that this device would be more convenient for some people, at least for the price you bought it for, but there's no way I'd pay $50 for one, unless I couldn't use a smart-phone for some reason.
@gblargg4 жыл бұрын

I guess I'm very lucky since I experienced my tinnitus for just about two weeks. It was quite faint and it fortunately went away. It returns only occasionally and just for a few minutes. There's something wrong with my cervical spine but at that time I also had an inflammation of the Eustachian tube. Still I must say that listening to this kind of noise would make me crazy in about an hour. What worked for me, was a recording of a train from inside a sleeping car. Slept like a baby. When I find myself troubled, I play it even when my hearing is alright, very relaxing. No matter what, I understand that this can still be beneficial for a crapload of people.

What you should have done is matched the power draw of the LectroFan in decibels to a fan that produces the equivalent amount of decibals. That little fan you compared it to was almost silent. Also it's not just the watts that matters when it comes to impact on an electrical bill but the actual draw in AMPS. Turn the LectroFan to the highest volume setting, measure the sound decibels, then find a fan that will match that same decibel level at its highest setting then measure not only the watts but the actual power draw in AMPS and you'll see a notable difference in favor of the LectroFan since an actual electric motor the size necessary to match the LectroFan max volume setting will have to be big enough to power a large size fan and those types of electric motors draw plenty of amps. Otherwise you are comparing apples to oranges.

I rely heavily on a an app named White Noise by a company called TMSOFT on my Mac for its brown noise. I get distracted very easily and oftentimes drowning out the sound around me is the only way I can work. Likewise, there’s a great noise generator called Sleep Machine for iOS. Both of these apps have many more options than brown, white, and pink noise, including things like rain, air conditioners, and trains and allow you to mix them all together. A favorite of mine for sleeping at one point was a mix between a thunderstorm, airplane cabin, and distant train. This device is pretty cool, but I don’t think you mentioned it having an headphone jack. That’s sort of a dealbreaker for me. As a side note, ambient music can be great for sleeping. Check out the Disintegration Loops albums (and read up about how they were created, which is what makes them particularly interesting).

Everyone are different but I find that I need quiet space both externally and internally, otherwise I feel like the world is very soul destroying and oppressive. Silence cleanses you and helps you hear your inner self and thoughts, which are normally drowned out by the noise of modern life. This confuses the people that know me well, because I am a musician and also love some forms of heavy Metal, Jazz and Classical etc. There is a huge difference between noise and music though, especially constant and repetitive sounds although some non-forms of music fall into this category, e.g. Hip Hop / Rap / Dance etc.
