Hugh Nibley Teachings of the Book of Mormon Sem 1 - Lect 1
The Book of Mormon- Like Nothing Else
Full Lecture Series: / nibleybookofmormon
Lecture 1 Text: maxwellinstitute.byu.edu/publi...
Free Book of Mormon: mormon.org/free-book-of-mormon
Hugh Nibley was a brilliant man, a real Renaissance man competent in Music, Art, History and Science. He had a photographic memory and often quoted ancient texts verbatim in their original languages during his lectures. The former dean of the Harvard Divinity School, George MacRae, once lamented while hearing him lecture, "It is obscene for a man to know that much!"
Nibley was famous for his research into ancient documents dealing with religious practices and lifestyles and their relationship to modern religion. He became fluent in 12 languages because had to, as the texts he was studying had yet to be translated into English. This list includes Hebrew, Greek, Egyptian, Classical Latin, Coptic, Arabic, Russian, German, French, Dutch, Italian, and Spanish. He also studied Old Bulgarian, Old English, and Old Norse.
Nibley's rigorous defense of Mormon scriptures earned him a worldwide reputation as a scholar. Nibley was praised by Evangelical scholars Mosser and Owen for his ability to draw upon respected historical sources to provide strong support for Latter-day Saint beliefs.
At the time of this Lecture series, Nibley was Professor Emeritus of Ancient Scripture at BYU, having retired in 1976. He can be viewed as the Godfather of LDS scholarship. He published 19 books and also published dozens of scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals on topics without direct reference to Mormonism. It is a rare treat to hear him speak, as he passed away in 2005. If you enjoy this lecture, please forward it on to others you thing would enjoy it as well.
We have a few more of his lectures on our KZfaq channel, or you can get the entire lecture series on DVD here: bit.ly/Va2GrC

Hi Anthony my name is Ken. I was watching this priceless video of a priceless man and saw your beautiful comment and wanted to reach out to you. I am a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Hugh Nibley played a significant role in my journey to find my Savior Jesus Christ and His True and Restored Gospel! I like you thought while watching his lectures and reading his writings what a truly wonderful man he is! Overflowing with knowledge, wisdom and integrity and a truly generous heart! Then one day I was struck with the thought as though it was a bolt of lightning “ if Hugh Nibley loves The Book Of Mormon and believes that it is revelation given to us from our Father In Heaven and that through reading and pondering and praying about The Book Of Mormon I too can receive personal revelation of it’s truthfulness that’s good enough for me! So I did as Brother Nibley taught me and I really read the Book Of Mormon with a sincere desire to know of its truthfulness ( before I had been reading it for curiosity!) and I truly pondered on the question of “what if the Book of Mormon is true!? And wouldn’t it be wonderful if it is True!!!” And I realized that what makes Hugh Nibley the man that he is is because HE KNOWS THAT THE BOOK OF MORMON IS REVELATION GIVEN TO HIM FROM HIS LOVING HEAVENLY FATHER AND THAT BECAUSE THE BOOK OF MORMON IS TRUE THEN JOSEPH SMITH IS A PROPHET AND IF JOSEPH SMITH IS A PROPHET THAN THE GOSPEL THAT HE RESTORED IS TRUE!!!! And most importantly that I CAN KNOW FOR MYSELF THAT THESE THINGS ARE TRUE!!! Jesus taught us that “By their fruits ye shall know them” and I simply came to the understanding that if Hugh Nibley with all of his knowledge, wisdom and integrity knows that The Book Of Mormon is true, that Joseph Smith is a Prophet and that The Restored Gospel is true then I MUST take the time and sincere effort to find out if it’s true!! I did and the answer to my question of “ Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it is true!!” was far more profound than I could have imagined at that time!!! Anthony I hope and pray that you can take this journey yourself and receive all the blessings that our Heavenly Father and His Son and our Savior Jesus Christ have in store for you and for all of His children who sincerely read, ponder and pray about the Book Of Mormon! It is the key to everything and nothing would bring more joy to Hugh Nibley’s heart than to know that your respect and admiration for him was your first steps in your journey to discovering these truths for yourself! May God be with you my friend and please reach out to me with any questions, Ken.

I was so blessed to be taught by such a refined and intelligent man. Coming from being myself from Jewish background I've really loved diving into the Latter Day Saint works. A good rabbi friend of mine had said that the two faiths that support that of the Jewish faith being Christians and Mormons who both speak of the things from Torah as fact and not fantasy. I asked if he meant that Mormons and Christians wouldn't be in the same category and he said no, the latter is superior because of it's Jewish roots are showing.

GDK of course, an accusation does not necessarily equal truth. I witnessed someone in my family accuse another family member of molesting them. I believed them (as did most family members). Then one day (years later) I heard the accuser laughing and telling a friend of theirs that they lied about the molestation. I mention this to demonstrate what I said earlier, that is, an accusation does not automatically equal a truth. All evidence indicates the accusation against this man is false. You should take care when leveling accusation against someone.

Thanks Keith Peterson, for that. GDK you need to do a little investigation that is truly unbiased by personal feelings against the LDS church before jumping on somebody else's race pony. @millwork3319

This response is 5 years later, however, the answer is that those teachings were developed by the heads of the movement that went west. I have asked that question a myriad of times over the years and never a concrete answer has been given. I’m 3rd generation RLDS and none of those teachings ever have been part of this church. After Joseph Smith’s murder his son continued in the church (RLDS) leadership and denounced the validity of those “doctrines.”

BobMcDanielRobertson Threats from a fat dead-eyed devotee of a marginalized 18th century fraud are always hilarious. "The modern educated Saints of God have answered every question and used SCIENCE, Geology and Geography...blablablah" Throwing up in your mouth doesn't equate to evidence. Secular Universities aren't rushing to add anything from the BoM fraud to their understanding of pre-Columbus America for a reason Bobby. 2 Nephi 2:22 and Alma 12:23-24 state there was no death of any kind (humans, all animals, birds, fish, dinosaurs, etc.) on this earth until the “Fall of Adam”, which according to D&C 77:6-7 occurred 7,000 years ago. It is scientifically established there has been life and death on this planet for billions of years. This stuff isn't convincing. It is indicting.

In his Temples and Cosmos, he answered me many questions....in for example; the worthy of all souls before and after the second estate, paradise, and Priesthood especially and fact that God is no respecter of mankind (any), it is vise versa. Time Israel endured in Desert for 40yrs was of God hence time for all children of Noah and Adam is of God. All things under and over heavens are of God and surely God's timing. Time to cry to smile to joy to sad etc- Definitely a good Nerd for me though.

@phoenixalchemist32 6 жыл бұрын
It really is a lifetime pursuit. Whenever you think you know it all, keep searching and you will find little gems of knowledge that tie into bigger things that you yourself may have already made a conclusion on. When that happens to me I think: "Gee, I am sure glad that was not a murder case that I had wrapped up so nicely and filed away so many years ago." These lectures really helped me to grow into a higher realm of knowledge and understanding at a time when I had given up on looking for answers. My eyes are getting bad and I cannot read very well any more. It is frustrating. So I started watching videos. I was amazed at the pictures that Dr. Nibley paints with his words. I can see them with my ears. Some people say they don't understand him at all, that all they hear is gibberish. I really don't know how to answer that except I am not them and that the Holy Ghost and what one already is aware of helps. I guess some might see it as putting syrup on a plate without any pancakes on it. The gotta make the pancakes for themselves first by doing the work required to hear his words and know what they mean...and there is a lot of steps in making pancakes when you cannot buy this particular batter ready-made at your local grocer. Even then you're not done. Then you have to mix it all up and apply the right amount of heat to it for the right amount of time. It takes practice, which is doing. There is not much effort or produce in wishing. That's why I said don't wish...go get it. I hope you do.

monstermuleymadness Also the Church has altered , obfuscated and essentially recreated portions of its history. . White simultaneously discouraging members to look outside of the collection of correlated materials it provides for members to educate themselves on Church History and related Issues THIS PRACTICE constitutes. an effective TACTIC employed by many other organizations such as the Jehovah's Witnesses, Scientology and others and is a form of INFORMATION CONTROL often combined with elements of. BEHAVIOR CONTROL as part of a Program of COERCIVE PERSUASION . Which is better known by another more ominous sounding name which you have most likely been conditioned to dismiss as unfounded in the case of Mormonism. , it can be much easier to recognize face practices when served in the program of an organization which you do not belong to in your case perhaps the Jehovah's Witnesses or Scientology would be useful for you to observe. Once you have done so and learn to recognize certain techniques it can be shocking When You observe them being applied within Mormonism Since the realization that the application of such technology within your own organization demonstrate a Deliberate and Convert Practice which Violates your trust, and as you may conclude to a degree your moral agency. . In studying the application of these techniques In other groups such as the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Scientology religion I notice these people have been conditioned to mentally shutdown critical thinking in regards to analyzing aspects of their own religious experience and organization and to reject thoughts that tend to undermine the assertion that they are being guided by the one true God in the one true Church. Since this Violates our entire belief system in which our reality is vested we normally will reject this. After all, we Know that Mormonism is mainstream and that the Lord is in charge We are not another Off the Wall totally out there weirdo Church like Scientology or the Moonies your know. Those poor manipulated victims who believe In some leader who alone has authority to speak for God and give Revelations which could be difficult for members to follow who have possession rational thinking abilities. But we're in the true church so I must trust in the Lord CTR & Follow the Prophet he knows the way. 3x Despite the effectiveness of Coercive persuasion techniques by these organizations, many people wake up when they recognize stark contradictions in the scriptures, doctrines practices and history of the given organization .

First, I would like to say at the outset that I have great respect for Mr. Nibley. Around minute 7:30 he begins to make the argument that the Book of Mormon's origins are superior to that of the Bible and he gives a couple of reasons why. 1. There are thousands of manuscripts and none agree and 2. He states that there are editions of the Bible, and thus, if a new edition comes out that means the previous editions were wrong. I would like to state that the origins of the Book of Mormon are not as clean as he leads his students to believe. The Book of Mormon is much more complex than a book handed to Joseph Smith. Namely, the book is complex enough to have its own preface which explains no less than 4 strains of Plates: the Small plates, the large plates, the brass plates, and the Plates of Ether. Mormon and his son Moroni had the difficult task of abridging this much larger work. So, Mr. Nibly at best has grossly understated the difficulty of producing the final product of the Book of Mormon. As for the second point about the Bible editions: the Book of Mormon that most people are reading right now is the 1981 edition or the new 2013 edition. When JS gave the original work to the editor/printer there were corrections made. We still have this original printer's document. The most famous change being "white and delightsome" to "pure and delightsome." So, my thesis is that while Mr. Nibly is somewhat correct, he doesn't go into the details of the actual truth.

It is amazing really what we do to determine what is and what is not true! We are here on Earth and have been given the free agency to determine truth from error. That's a pretty huge responsibility most of us don't ever think about...its taken for granted. We have writings we can look to that are 2nd and third and maybe even 4th hand with no writings that were originally written by Jesus Christ Himself....someone else recorded His words or their experiences and their historical observations, what they were inspired to write and perhaps even through the Savior Himself....and then a group of people even took it upon themselves with no authority from God what so ever to change and translate original works back in the 400AD time...and today other groups of people take it up themselves to interpret scriptures and rewrite them into modern form....so He never wrote any of what we call scriptures canonized or not!...and what he said has been rewritten edited, interpreted, summarized, and made into plays and movies and so on....but there are no original writing that were recorded by Jesus Himself. It's pretty amazing really about how we each determine what is truth and what is error.

So you believe all the following... teachings of LDS officials through the years. These teachings are documented from Mormon writers, NOT anti-Mormons. Atonement "Jesus paid for all our sins when He suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane," (Laurel Rohlfing, “Sharing Time: The Atonement,” Friend, Mar. 1989, p. 39.). "We accept Christ's atonement by repenting of our sins, being baptized, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and obeying all of the commandments," (Gospel Principles, Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1979, p. 68.). Baptism Baptism for the dead, (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. II, p. 141). This is a practice of baptizing each other in place of non-Mormons who are now dead. Their belief is that in the afterlife, the "newly baptized" person will be able to enter into a higher level of Mormon heaven. Bible "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly. . ." (8th Article of Faith of the Mormon Church). "Wherefore, thou seest that after the book hath gone forth through the hands of the great and abominable church, that there are many plain and precious things taken away from the book, which is the book of the Lamb of God," (1 Nephi 13:28). Book of Mormon The book of Mormon is more correct than the Bible, (History of the Church, 4:461). Devil, the The Devil was born as a spirit after Jesus "in the morning of pre-existence," (Mormon Doctrine, p. 192). “According to our teachings, Satan and an army of supporters were cast down to earth from the premortal spirit world. They are spirit brothers of ours, and are real persons having spirit bodies” (Joseph F. Merrill, Conference Reports, April 1941, p. 49). “On first hearing, the doctrine that Lucifer and our Lord, Jesus Christ, are brothers may seem surprising to some-especially to those unacquainted with latter-day revelations. But both the scriptures and the prophets affirm that Jesus Christ and Lucifer are indeed offspring of our Heavenly Father and, therefore, spirit brothers. Jesus Christ was with the Father from the beginning. Lucifer, too, was an angel ‘who was in authority in the presence of God,’ a ‘son of the morning.’ (See Isa. 14:12; D&C 76:25-27.) Both Jesus and Lucifer were strong leaders with great knowledge and influence. But as the Firstborn of the Father, Jesus was Lucifer’s older brother. (See Col. 1:15; D&C 93:21.)” (Jess L. Christensen, “I Have a Question,” Ensign, June 1986, p. 25). "A plan of salvation was needed for the people of earth so Jesus offered a plan to the Father and Satan offered a plan to the father but Jesus' plan was accepted. In effect the Devil wanted to be the Savior of all Mankind and to "deny men their agency and to dethrone god," (Mormon Doctrine, p. 193; Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 8). God God used to be a man on another planet, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 321; Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, vol. 5, p. 613-614; Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, vol. 2, p. 345; Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 333). "The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s . . . " (D&C 130:22). God is in the form of a man, (Joseph Smith, Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 3). "God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!!! . . . We have imagined that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea and take away the veil, so that you may see," (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345). God the Father had a Father, (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, vol. 6, p. 476; Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses, vol. 5, p. 19; Milton Hunter, First Council of the Seventy, Gospel through the Ages, p. 104-105). God resides near a star called Kolob, (Pearl of Great Price, p. 34-35; Mormon Doctrine, p. 428). God had sexual relations with Mary to make the body of Jesus, (Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 4, 1857, p. 218; vol. 8, p. 115). This one is disputed among many Mormons and not always 'officially' taught and believed. Nevertheless, Young, the 2nd prophet of the Mormon church taught it. "Therefore we know that both the Father and the Son are in form and stature perfect men; each of them possesses a tangible body . . . of flesh and bones," (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 38). God, becoming a god After you become a good Mormon, you have the potential of becoming a god, (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345-347, 354.) "Then shall they be gods, because they have no end; therefore shall they be from everlasting to everlasting, because they continue; then shall they be above all, because all things are subject unto them. Then shall they be gods, because they have all power, and the angels are subject unto them," (D&C 132:20). God, many gods There are many gods, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 163). "And they (the Gods) said: Let there be light: and there was light," (Book of Abraham 4:3). God, mother goddess There is a mother god, (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 443). God is married to his goddess wife and has spirit children, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 516). God, Trinity The Trinity is three separate Gods: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. "That these three are separate individuals, physically distinct from each other, is demonstrated by the accepted records of divine dealings with man," (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 35). Gospel, The The true gospel was lost from the earth. Mormonism is its restoration, (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 182-185.) Consists of laws and ordinances: "As these sins are the result of individual acts it is just that forgiveness for them should be conditioned on individual compliance with prescribed requirements -- 'obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel,'" (Articles of Faith, p. 79) Heaven There are three levels of heaven: telestial, terrestrial, and celestial, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 348). Holy Ghost, The The Holy Ghost is a male personage, A Marvelous Work and a Wonder, (Le Grand Richards, Salt Lake City, 1956, p. 118; Journal of Discourses, vol. 5, p. 179). Jesus The first spirit to be born in heaven was Jesus, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 129). Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers and we were all born as siblings in heaven to them both, (Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 8; Gospel Through the Ages, p. 15). Jesus' sacrifice was not able to cleanse us from all our sins, (murder and repeated adultery are exceptions), (Journal of Discourses, vol. 3, 1856, p. 247). "Therefore we know that both the Father and the Son are in form and stature perfect men; each of them possesses a tangible body . . . of flesh and bones," (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 38). "The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood--was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers," (Journal of Discourses, vol. 8, p. 115). “Jesus was begotten by his Father as literally as he was conceived by his mother” (Bruce R. McConkie, Doctrinal New Testament Commentary 1:144). "Christ Not Begotten of Holy Ghost . . . Christ was begotten of God. He was not born without the aid of Man, and that Man was God!" (Doctrines of Salvation, by Joseph Fielding Smith, 1954, 1:18). "Elohim is literally the Father of the spirit of Jesus Christ and also of the body in which Jesus Christ performed His mission in the flesh . . . " (First Presidency and Council of the Twelve, 1916, "God the Father," compiled by Gordon Allred, p. 150). Joseph Smith If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation. There is no salvation [the context is the full gospel including exaltation to Godhood] outside the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 670). Pre-existence We were first begotten as spirit children in heaven and then born naturally on earth, (Journal of Discourse, vol. 4, p. 218). "The Father, Elohim, is called the Father because he is the literal father of the spirits of mortals (Heb. 12:9). This paternity is not allegorical. All individual human spirits were begotten (not created from nothing or made) by the Father in a premortal state, where they lived and were nurtured by Heavenly Parents” (Encyclopedia of Mormonism, 2:549). Prophets We need prophets today, the same as in the Old Testament, (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 444-445). Salvation "One of the most fallacious doctrines originated by Satan and propounded by man is that man is saved alone by the grace of God; that belief in Jesus Christ alone is all that is needed for salvation," (Miracle of Forgiveness, Spencer W. Kimball, p. 206). A plan of salvation was needed for the people of earth so Jesus offered a plan to the Father and Satan offered a plan to the father but Jesus' plan was accepted. In effect the Devil wanted to be the Savior of all Mankind and to "deny men their agency and to dethrone god," (Mormon Doctrine, p. 193; Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 8). Jesus' sacrifice was not able to cleanse us from all our sins, (murder and repeated adultery are exceptions), (Journal of Discourses, vol. 3, 1856, p. 247). Good works are necessary for salvation (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 92). There is no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith as a prophet of God (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p. 188). ......

As we examine the Book of Mormon we must evaluate the people’s living conditions with that of the Indians. What type of plants does the book mention? Were these plants in America at that time? What animals are said to be in the area? Did the Indians have the knowledge of metal working as mentioned in the Book of Mormon? What was their written language? Their mode of travel? How do these claims compare with archeology? The Book of Mormon mentions: • wheat (Mosiah 9:9) • horses (1 Nephi 18:25) • chariots (Alma 18:9-11; 20:6; 3 Nephi 3:22) • cows (Enos 21) • elephants (Ether 9:19) • silk (Alma 1:29; 4:6; Ether 9:17) • linen (Mosiah 10:5; Helaman 6:13; Ether 10:24) • money-pieces of gold and silver (Alma 11:3-20) • steel (2 Nephi 5:15; Jarom 1:8; Ether 7:9) None of these items were here before the Spaniards. #

The Book of Mormon is riddled with false prophecy, therefore, it is not inspired by God. For example, in the book of Alma it states that the Messiah would be born in Jerusalem, but this is wrong, Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Furthermore, the book of Nephi states that many precious scriptures would be lost through the years, however, with the discovery of many Biblical books at Qumran, the text we have are verbatim with the ancient texts, making the claim in Nephi false. So, you can throw away those for being wrong!

Mosiah 27:23 the limbs of Alma received their strength, and he stood up and began to speak unto them, And it came to pass after they had fasted and prayed for the space of two days and two nights, the limbs of Alma received their strength, and he stood up and began to speak unto them, bidding them to be of good comfort: Mosiah 27:23 so we can see that the 2 days was mentioned for alma to receive his strength for his limbs But that's a lie because alma was not speaking until day 3 in Alma 36:10 And it came to pass that I fell to the earth; and it was for the space of three days and three nights that I could not open my mouth, neither had I the use of my limbs. Alma 36:10 So it was a false prophecy that the mormon god gave unto alma to right.

I know this comment was made 3 years ago, but I would like to add a simple solution to your discrepancy for others to see when they come across your comment. In Mosaih 27:23 the reference is to how long the priests fasted until Alma regained his strength, which was two days and two nights. When Alma is is retelling his own story of how long it took him to regain strength of his limbs, he records that it was three days and three nights. The two passages are clearly referencing two different events: one-how many days the priests fasted, two-how many days Alma was without strength. I see nothing contradictory. I assume the priests began fasting after the first day for a miracle. Yet another evidence of the truthfulness of the book of Mormon!

Dr. Daniel Wallace, Dallas Theological Seminary, outlines how we got our Holy Bible. Hugh Nibley does a great disservice by minimizing the importance of the English Bible. 2 Peter 1:10-21 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son,[c] with whom I am well pleased,” 18 we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. Proverbs 30:5-6 English Standard Version (ESV) 5 Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. 6 Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

The Book of Mormon presents HUGE problems that cannot be explained away: LANGUAGE: 1 Ne. 1:2, etc., states that Hebrews who left Jerusalem and came to the Americas spoke Egyptian. It is a known fact that Hebrews spoke Hebrew, and their records were kept in Hebrew. Egyptians were their enemies! It is as absurd to think that Hebrews would have written their sacred history in Egyptian, as to think that American History would have been written in Russian. In Mormon 9:32, 34, it is stated that the language was "reformed Egyptian", and that no other people knew their language. There is no known language called "reformed Egyptian." Ask any linguistic expert. DESERT FRUIT: 1 Ne. 17:5 talks about ample fruit and wild honey being products of Sinai desert (called Bountiful). Not possible! DESERT TIMBER: 1 Ne. 18:1 talks about ample timber that these Jews used to build a ship. There is not ample timber in that area. It was a desert. It still is a desert. LAMAN RIVER: 1 Ne. 2:6-9 mentions a river named Laman that flows into the Red Sea. There is no river there and has not been since the Pleistocene era. BOTANICAL PROBLEMS are many in the Book of Mormon. Wheat, barley, olives, etc., are mentioned, but none of these were in the Americas at that time. ANIMALS: North America had no cows, asses, horses, oxen, etc. Europeans brought them hundreds and hundreds of years later. North America had no lions, leopards, or sheep at that time. Honey bees were taken there by Europeans much later. Ether 9:18, 19, lists domestic cattle, cows, and oxen as separate species! They did not even exist in the Americas at that time. The Book of Mormon also mentions swine as being useful to man. Maybe, but Jews would not think of swine as being useful or good; swine were forbidden, unclean animals to them. Elephants were not in the Americas either. And what on earth are "cureloms" and "cumoms"? No such animals have ever been identified anywhere. Domestic animals that are thought to be "useful" would hardly become extinct. Ether 9:30-34 talks about poisonous snakes driving sheep to the south. The Book of Mormon states that the people ate the snake-killed animals, all of them! (v. 34). Hebrews would not have eaten animals that were killed that way. Chickens and dogs did not exist in the Americas at that time either. BUTTER is also mentioned, but it could not possibly exist, since no milk-producing animals were found in the Americas at that time. CLOTHING MATERIAL: No silk and wool clothing (or moths) existed at that time either, contrary to 1 Ne. 13:7; Alma 4:6; Ether 9:17 and 10:24. BEHEADING: Beheaded Shiz --- Ether 15:30-31 says that after Shiz was beheaded, he raised up and struggled for breath! MISCALCULATIONS: In Ether, chapter 6, we learn that furious winds propelled the barges to the promised land for 344 days! Even if the winds were not "furious" but, for example, blew only 10 miles per hour, the distance traveled in 344 days would have been 82,560 miles, or more than three times around the world. Absurdity, to say the least! And why would the Lord instruct Jared to make a hole on top and bottom of each barge? (Ether 2:20). POPULATION: When Lehi left Jerusalem, according to the Book of Mormon, his group consisted of fewer than 20 people. Yet 19 years later the people had so prospered and multiplied in the Promised Land that they built a temple of which the "manner of construction was like unto the temple of Solomon: and the workmanship thereof was exceeding fine" (2. Ne. 5:16). Looking at what the Bible says about the construction of Solomon's temple, we find that it took 30,000 Israelites, 150,000 hewers of stone and carriers, 3,300 supervisors (I Kings 5:13-16) and about seven years to build it (See also I Kings 6). And how many people could Lehi have had in his group after 19 years? The book further tells that in less than 30 years after arriving on this continent, they had multiplied so rapidly that they even divided into two nations. Even the most rapid human reproduction could only have resulted in a few dozen in that brief time, and most of them still would be infants and children and about one-third older people. Not only did they divide into two nations, but throughout the book, about every few years, they had devastating wars that killed thousands (i.e., Alma 28:2). SKIN COLOR: Beginning after the first 19 years or so, Laman and Lemuel and their descendants and followers (!) turned dark skinned because of their disobedience (2 Ne. 5:21). According to the Book of Mormon, dark skin color was a curse from God! This change of skin color takes place throughout the book. In 2 Ne. 30:6 we read that if Lamanites accepted the true gospel, they became "white and delightsome" (and since the 1981 printing of the Book of Mormon, they became "pure and delightsome.) But if they left this true gospel, they became "dark and loathsome." People's skin color does not change if they believe or do not believe! Nor is the skin color a curse! The Book of Mormon teaches that Indians originated from these Jewish settlers. Indians are distinctly Mongoloid. They have the "Mongoloid" blue spot, specific blood traits, and their facial features are of typical Asian origin, not Semitic at all. Current DNA evidence has confirmed this as well. Questionable Materials for This Time Period: In Ether 7:8-9, we read of steel and breakable windows (2:23) in Abraham's time! Try to explain that to an archaeologist. Steel was not even developed until c 1400 years later. At the end of the Book of Mormon, Moroni tells about a great battle that took place on the Hill Cumorah. Over 200,000 people, armed to their teeth, were killed on that hill. The story tells about their weapons, breastplates, helmets, swords etc. Nothing has ever been found on that hill or anywhere else in this continent. As a matter of fact, metal, helmets, swords, etc., do not disappear in a mere 1,400 years. Before the LDS Church purchased the Hill Cumorah, it was literally dug full of holes and even caves, but nothing was ever found. (Joseph Smith told about a cave inside Hill Cumorah and how they - he and Oliver - went in and out of it. Supposedly it had wagon loads of gold plates, Laban sword, etc.) When people dig even for worms in the Holy Land, they make discoveries. In contrast to the Book of Mormon, cities, places, coins, clothing, swords, etc. mentioned in the Bible have been found by archaeologists, but not one single place mentioned in the Book of Mormon has ever been identified. There are still people in the LDS Church who believe that archaeology has proved, at least to a degree, the Book of Mormon. Some missionaries have shown pictures of ruins from Mexico and South America, implying that they prove the Book of Mormon, but they are from an entirely DIFFERENT TIME PERIOD and are ruins of idol worshipers who offered human sacrifices. further: www.namb.net/apologetics/the-truth-about-mormonism kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q9mjdLeG17e1eGg.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLtyhMhyy5ywkpc.html www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0002929707616292 /

www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/the-two-kingdoms-of-israel There were three superpowers around the time of Lehi (600 BC): The Assyrians, the Babylonians, and the Egyptians. Judah defected her alliance to Egypt and then to Babylon. If you do quick research on this, you'll find out that out of the three superpowers, Egypt threated Judah less harshly. Lehi, according to the Book of Mormon was wealthy. He could have been a merchant and when alliances are formed, commerce flows between entities. Lehi could have learned the language and writing of the Egyptians and taught his children, including Nephi. I'm stating this perspective here for consideration. It's up to you to decide. It appears like you like reading your scriptures. If I remember it right, even hundreds of years later, an angel who appeared in Joseph's dream instructed him to take his family to Egypt to protect the young Jesus. Also, www.moellerhaus.com/assyrian.htm. " Israel was exiled in this period and Judah was harassed and lost much territory to Assyria. 700 to 610 B.C. was a period of sustaining what had been gained and decline. Egypt had been subjugated politically but won the cultural struggle. Nineveh accepted the art and cultural styles of Egypt much like Americans are led by European culture. The artifacts dug from Nimrud from this period are almost totally Egyptian in style."

he just blew his point. The bible: 66 books, 39 authors, over 1500 years, and it is actually not as contradictory as he tries to make it out to be, especially for that many authors over that frame of time, it is amazingly, DIVINELY, cohesive. And the book of Mormon he claims in this video that it was given "in a single passing, in one bang, just like that, the whole thing, all edited, all in order, all translated, we don't have to argue about any of that stuff." HOW HONEST IS THIS? STUDY THE BOOK OF MORMON EDITS, AND CHANGES. For it being as Hugh put it, why did it have to have any edits and changes at all? Don't just use your heart to answer this question, use your mind too, because your heart can be deceived as the scriptures say. The bible also says test all things. Is Hugh being honest here? Use your heart and your mind.

Joseph Smith took a lot of material from the King James Bible, to include in his "Book of Mormon", supposedly written 1,200 years earlier than the KJBible! Here are some of those many plagiarisms in the Book of Mormon, which Joseph Smith obviously copied from the King James Bible: 1 Nephi 20,21 (Isaiah 48,49); 2 Nephi 7,8 (Isaiah 50-52:2); 2 Nephi 12-24 (Isaiah 2-14); 2 Nephi 27 (Isaiah 29); Mosiah 14 (Isaiah 53); 3 Nephi 12-14 (Matthew 5-7); 3 Nephi 22 (Isaiah 54); 3 Nephi 24,25 (Malachi 3,4). You might well ask how it is that sections of the 17th-century King James Bible appear in the Book of Mormon which was reportedly written and buried in the 5th century, some 1,200 years earlier! What do you think? Many sections have been copied literally word-for-word. This is proof positive that the Book of Mormon is an invention of Joseph Smith (probably with the assistance of some cohorts). ADDITIONALLY, there are loads of errors in the "Book of Mormon". Please check this site for details: www.bibleanswer.com/bom_cont.htm ~~~

hugh talking about how amazing this book is and how it couldn't have been made up, and that there is no alternative explanation other than an angel of God had to have allowed joseph to translate it... IF IT HAD THE CORRECT ANIMALS, CORRECT PLANTS, CORRECT METALLURGY, CORRECT WEAPONS, CORRECT GEOGRAPHY THEN IT WOULD BE AS AMAZING AS HUGH NIBLEY IS MAKING IT OUT TO BE. AND SINCE JOSEPH WAS TRANSLATING IT DIRECTLY WITHOUT ANY TRANSLATION INBETWEEN THAT WOULD CORRUPT OR DILUTE ITS ACCURACY WHY WOULD IT NOT HAVE ALL THE CORRECT ANIMALS, PLANTS, WEAPONS, ETC. ETC.

Ungodliness in the world... and Joseph Smith is a perfect example of that. Smith wanted to be rich and he had a scheme to sell a book to make a lot of money. In 1830 he placed newspaper advertisements and the first copies of the Book of Mormon were for sale at Grandin Bookstore in Palmyra, NY. Originally 5,000 copies of the BOM were published, selling for $1.75 a copy (about $48 today - which back then was a lot of money). Smith claimed the price was established via "revelation", a convenient revelation that accounted for $1.08 per copy more than the cost of publication). Due to the high price the BOM did not sell well and the price was later reduced to $1.25 per copy. Most of the publication was funded by Martin Harris whose wife claim he stated, "What if it is a lie; if you will let me alone I will make money out of it!" Even though the book did not sell as well, people did find Smith to be a charismatic religious leader and thus the formation of the LDS church. When Smith was creating the Book of Mormon pulled from a variety of sources. But he made a tragic mistake by using verses from the 1769 King James Version of the Bible as filler material. When doing so he unknowingly copied some KJV translation mistakes (some particularly unique to the KJV) into his book. The appearance of these mistakes prove that the BOM is not what Smith claimed it to be. For example, the first part of 2 Nephi 27:27 was copied by Smith from Isaiah 29:15 (1769 KJV). The next part was taken from Isaiah 29:16 with Smith adding the words "And they also say" and "But behold, I will show unto them, saith the Lord of Hosts, that I know all their works." The problem is that the part that goes "Surely, your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay" was not translated correctly in the King James Version of the Bible. Even though there has been much diversity in the rendering of this passage you will not find another Bible version that has been translated here like the KJV (which is a shame because John Wycliffe had already translated the passage correctly many years earlier). As one can see in the Wycliffe translation, in the Hebrew Isaiah 29:16 should begin with an exclamation of waywardness or perversity (also see the DBY). But notice how the Book of Mormon records the incorrectly translated 1769 King James Version of the Bible verbatim - thus proving that Smith was not "translating" (or dictating) from an ancient source but instead copying text from the 1769 KJV. Here's another example: Isaiah 9:5a was not translated correctly in the 1769 KJV. In the verse the Hebrew word transliterated seon actually means "sandal, boot (of soldier)" and not the word "battle." Notice how the BOM records the entire verse word for word from the 1769 KJV including the incorrectly translated word "battle" (2 Nephi 19:5). This shows Smith's reliance on the English of the 1769 KJV and not ancient plates. Yet another example is found in Isaiah 3:2 where the King James Version translators incorrectly render the Hebrew word transliterated qosem as "prudent" (see 2 Nephi 13:12). The word qosem actually means properly "a diviner" (or "soothsayer"). The KJV's incorrect translation was no doubt derived from the Geneva Bible and carried over into the Bishops Bible which served as the text basis for the 1611 KJV. The appearance of KJV translation mistakes in the Book of Mormon prove that Smith was lying about the origins of the Book of Mormon and witnesses were lying about the translation process. There is absolutely no reason why 17th century translation mistakes should occur in Smiths supposed ancient record. Don't fall for the LDS tactic of trusting your feelings (burning bosom) when it comes to the authenticity of the Book of Mormon - instead do what the Bible says and "test all things, hold fast to what is good."

Mormons teach that Jesus isn't the authority on who gets into heaven, but Joseph Smith. Can you explain to me how one of your leaders, Brigham Young stated in the Journal of Discourses Vol 7 Page 289 "no man or woman in this dispensation will ever inter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith." This clearly goes against scripture because in John 14:6 Jesus responds to Thomas by stating that "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me you would know my Father as well." If you truly believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God then how can you possibly believe that Joseph Smith has authority of equality with Jesus or above Jesus.

Because the Jesus Christ calls prophets and gives them authority. He is the way, the truth and the life, but he chooses men he trusts and gives them authority, with this authority comes responsibility for those that choose or do not choose to act on his words based on his actions. Should a man be allowed in that hates the prophets of old and refuses to acknowledge them? What good is the authority and responsibility if it has no meaning?
