Most ventilators during Initial setup, do calculation of resistance & compliance of the tubing system and ask you if you need to compensate for these. This is compensation of the " Mechanical dead space" only , not other types of dead space.

You need to have capnography attached to your Ventilator ( it is an option in most Ventilators now) Using Volumetric capnography, Ventilator is automatically calculates dead space for you
