The chirality explanation partly cleared up one concern I had earlier in the lecture, but not fully. It seems to me that there are other ways to arrange these various groups besides just swapping two of them. On the Alanine example near the end, what happens if you swap a pair that are not opposites, such as H and CH3. I realize these are 3D molecules and you can rotate them, but it's hard to tell if it will be equivalent to the L or D types without a 3D model in front of me to play with. Will this affect the angles between the different groups? I remember Eric Weinstein talking about chirality being a fundamental property of the universe and I can't help but think I'm on the trail of something key here.

05:18 Why is it that some textbooks show those groups differently? Some of them have H₂N-C-C(=O)OH, while others have it your way: H₃N⁺-C-C(=O)O⁻. What's the deal with that?

The former is the molecule; the latter is the monomer (when it is part of a protein).

@@michaelgerzevitz7052 I don't think that's correct. If that would be the case, they would have to draw additional bonds. Amino acids are not ionic compounds, they don't form proteins by attraction of charges - they do that by peptide bonds.

@@bonbonpony Correct; they form bonds because of the ribosome. The latter is just a representation of the former in it's monomeric state (a Zwitterion). They're the same thing.

NH2 is the amino group. NH3+ is the ionized form of an amino group. When it is in a solution it will attract an H+ proton and will be protonated becoming NH3+.
