hi, could you plz tell me how to solve a massless bar-spring mass system? It is a problem 8.4 of fundamentals of str. dynamics by Craig.

@@Freeball99 Thank u for replying , 8.4 For the bar-spring-mass system in Fig. P8.4, assume that the bar is rigid but its mass is negligible, that the rotation of the bar remains small, and that gravity can be neglected. In parts (a) and (b), derive the equations of motion, and write the equations in matrix form, (a) Let coordinates u1 and u2 be the vertical displacements of the masses m1 and m2, respectively, (b) Let coordinates u1 and u2 be the vertical displacements of points A and C where springs k1 and k2, respectively, are connected to the rigid bar. (c) Briefly discuss how the equations of motion are coupled in each case.

Apologies for the delay. I thought I had posted a response to this. This problem is really about getting the kinematics correct. I have done this on the attached sheet. You should be able to plug the displacements and velocities in for your potential and kinetic energy expressions and then get the equations of motion. www.dropbox.com/s/0gic5tok64hen85/2DOF.pdf?dl=0

The app is called "Paper" by WeTransfer. Running on an iPad Pro 13 inch and using an Apple Pencil. Quicktime is used to record the screen.
