​@@DrCST Hello Dr CST, I was wondering why people would go to work at a top university if the pay is about the same. Is there any reason? I believe if a lecturer works at a higher ranked university like UCL, IC, Manchester, Surrey etc, she/ he will be under more pressure compare to those who are working elsewhere?

Thanks for watching! The medical physics researchers I know who work as university lecturers in the UK do have PhD's - but I suspect there are roles where people don't. I'd look at jobs.ac.uk to get a feel of the requirements for the lectureship posts that would align to your area 😃

Typically to get promoted to a UK professor you need to demonstrate excellence and leadership in your subject (great publications, recognised subject expert, significant department admin roles, research funding income, teaching experience etc). Usually this all takes time... but there is not a fixed timescale to go from lecturer to professor.

A few people on the teaching pathway still conduct research in their specialist subjects, (eg physics, sociology etc). The vast majority on the teaching pathway tend to conduct research in the more educational/pedagogical aspects of their subjects. I do not believe it is possible to attain the rank of Professorial Teaching Fellow/Professor of Teaching in [named subject] with a zero record in publications. It´s more to do with the criteria for promotion. If you´re on the Lecturer pathway, the promotions committee will judge you primarily on a respectable balance in teaching and research productivity. For the teaching (or research) pathway, you will be judged primarily on absolute excellence in teaching (or research). In other words, you will not be promoted to a more advanced rank on the teaching pathway if your admin and research output are far superior to your teaching - basically you´re on the wrong track.

I tend to go with Dear Dr/Professor [Surname] in an opening email to someone. Then I go by the tone of the reply, but often will move to using the persons first name in future emails 😊

Thanks for watching 😊 Whether you can lecturer without a PhD/whilst studying for one will depend on your subject and location. I'd suggest having a look at job adverts for lecturers in your field to see if the PhD is a requirement (jobs.ac.uk lets you search for lectureship roles in specific disciplines). For UK physics lecturers we do tend to need the PhD first. Hope this helps!

Just to add that Those who have a 1st at Undergrad level often have the opportunity too skip Masters straight to PhD.

Welcome to the channel. Congratulations on your Master's and all the best for your PhD. I'd suggest looking at lecturer job adverts in your subject field - that will help give you a feel of the requirements. (For physics my requirements included needing a PhD, evidence of teaching and leading research programmes.)

A good place to looks is jobs.ac.uk or the adverts universities put up. That way you can see the jobs requirements and offered salary.

Each university will have their own requirements for PhD applications, generally they will be looking for students to have demonstrated a range of skills in their CV. Publishing a public essay/paper whilst an undergraduate is challenging and in my subject is not expected prior to starting a PhD. However publishing essays/papers forms a key component once a student is undertaking their PhD. Might be different depending on the subject and country - but I hope this helps.
