Actually, I think "Heartbreaker" stands perfectly on its own. I want to do a video sometime explaining my thoughts on the song, as it's one of my top faves of theirs, and IMO one of the greatest hard rock songs ever. There is SO much passion in this song, it's just stunning. The only element I'll expound here is the final down-stroke "HEART--" which ends the song so abruptly. I think it's brilliant, as it throws off the listener in terms of pitch, as well as interrupting (breaking!) the title word. It leaves us in mid-stride verbally and off-pitch melodically, just as it feels in real life when someone breaks your heart. It occurs (at least sometimes) with no warning and creates a jarring sense of disruption of the "beautiful music" of love. That "Living Loving Maid" follows on so well, and was placed so quickly after "Heartbreaker" on the original vinyl album, has created a sense that these two songs "MUST" be played back-to-back (and of course radio has treated them that way), and I don't really object to doing so, but when I spent some time pondering "Heartbreaker" in itself, I realized that it doesn't actually have to be that way. I'm happy with them on their own or as a quasi-medley.

I think Jimmy Page must hold the record for top guitar solos of all time. I love Led Zeppelin too!!! Great shirt btw! I think Kel is right about the sound of the instruments back then. The other thing is that Page produced all the albums. So he is intimately involved in all aspects of the Zeppelin sound.
@bishlap
@bishlap 4 жыл бұрын
when Jimmy was right/healthy, he was as good/exciting/original ROCK player as anyone. Technically, there are thousands of great/better players, but, they cannot play/write/produce like Jimmy...and that is what separates Jimmy Page from most great guitarists. Of course, the visual dynamics of Jimmy and Zeppelin will never be touched, NEVER. Peace all.

Jimmy was known for his experimentation. He would shave a coin to use as a pick or a bone from his chicken lunch. Put marbles in a violin case. His most famous of course is when he had Bonham run a second beat on a guitar case under his regular drumming.
@esoomynona5813

The often overlooked aspect of Page's musical genius, is the way he created and experimented with textures and sounds. Kel, think also about how the tracks were performed, often live in the studio and using the natural acoustics and mic placement. Plus the recording was analog, which makes a huge difference, a far more 'organic' feel to the music.

Whenever I listen to a Led Zep song on the Radio or here in reactor videos, at the end of a song, in my mind, I always hear the Next song from the album, just the side effect of listening to them over & Over & over etc...... So THANK YOU for playing this one the way it was meant, It always feels like a punch to the gut when people or even the Radio only plays one or the other song!!! I know that on Utube, that not everyone knows, simply because they've never listened to an Entire album before, let alone those that are hearing these songs for the first time. So I always give them a pass but will check if someone in the Comments had "Hinted" about it. Again, Many many many THANK YOU's for reacting to Led Zeppelin!!!

I 100% agree. Zeppelin is an album band. Put it on, play side one, turn it over, play side two. I've been a huge fan since 1 came out and saw them live in 1970, yet I never learned the name of some of my favorite songs until the advent of KZfaq, where everything is labeled. But I always know what song comes after the one that's playing!

She is spot on about Hendrix! Rich, you spoke of the “heaviness” of the music, and that is EXACTLY the word we used back in ‘69......”wow man....that’s really heavy stuff”. The only sound around at the time before Zeppelin hit that was anywhere near as heavy, in my opinion, was Hendrix. She’s hearing the distortion in the guitar sound....that huge, rich, heavy sound that just blows your socks off. Add in Bonzo’s legendary monstrous drum sound, and Plant’s powerful voice with its huge range, and JPJ expert bass/keyboards and you did indeed have a sound that no one had ever heard before. And it took the world by storm.....

That guitar quality you're hearing in all these 70's tunes (Led Zeppelin, The Who etc) is the Fender or Gibson guitar fed through Marshall amps. They were the weapons of choice for most guitarists of the time. Hendrix and Blackmore commonly used Fender Stratocaster, while Page and Townsend used the Gibson Les Paul. The Gibsons tend to have a deeper, more gutsy tone and the Stratocaster gets you that amazing screaming notes high up the fretboard. Together they give you that amazing 70's tone

I'd never heard such fury before, at least not from a musical instrument! It totally captivated me as a teen, and I still lock in on it and rock out every time it comes on. And it keeps going after the rhythm section comes back in! Keep listening to the lead guitar as it builds up to the final desperate crescendo wail before Plant grinds back in on vocals. The way Page keeps playing just a little further past when the rhythm section cuts off again, but not playing anything new, just repeating the same riff he'd been playing several times already... it absolutely PERFECTLY conveys desperation and frustration. Utterly brilliant musicmaking.

Absolutely love watching you two do these videos! You both make me smile so much! I was excited to see this particular reaction, today. I don't know I missed it, the other day when you posted it. But, here I am! Rich is correct... It's criminal to not listen to both of these songs, back-to-back. I don't know the history behind it, but I can only imagine that it's a situation of... A DJ was playing Heartbreaker, and didn't realize that was the end of the song, and didn't spin the next record quickly enough, or shut off this particular turntable on time, before living loving maid started up. And it just picked up, from there. I'm sure there's some musically studious person out there, who has the actual answer. I don't know. Anyway, I think it would be kind of fun to pull up some songs, and either review them, or react to them, that are similar to this. Two songs that were separate songs, but, we're always played back-to-back. For example, Van Halen's Eruption, + You Really Got Me... They just go back to back. One was not part of the other, but that's just how they're supposed to be listened to. It's musical law. Another great one, would be from Journey...Just the Same Way + Anytime. One song is not related to, or tied to the other. But, according to musical law, it is a global crime to not listen to them, back-to-back. Now, as far as new sound, and listening to some of these well-digger's... Another fun musical journey would be to let Kell reacts to some of the "super groups,"... but, begin with listening to some of the original artist, and their songs, try to hooking up with other great musicians, to phone the super group. I thought I'd just come up listening to riches explanation of Led Zeppelin's guitar sound. You said something like, "That's just Jimmy Page. That's his sound." So, maybe dive into one or two more Zeppelin songs, and then jump into some Bad Company, with Paul Rodgers on vocals. Then, follow up with The Firm... a song like Closer, or Radioactive. Another fun one, would be... Get into some David Coverdale era Deep Purple... or maybe Whitesnake... And then either some Zeppelin stuff, to set up a late 80s collaboration... "Coverdale-Page." Or maybe some grunge, like Alice in Chains... Followed up by may be some Screaming Trees, all in prep for listening to a band that I've mentioned, few times before... Mad Season. And, now that I mention Mad Season , it just came to me...thr best way to describe Mad Season, and their sound. Imagine if Dark Side of the Moon, had been released in the 90s, as a grunge album. Okay, I've got to end it here. Sorry I rambled on so long. I just get really excited when I talk about some of my favorite music! #feelthemusic

Whole Lotta Love, Ramble On and Heartbreaker/Living Lovin Maid are some of my favorite songs of all time. One of the things that people don't always realize is that when this album was released, the Beatles Abbey Road, the Rolling Stones Let it Bleed, and the Who Tommy album had either just been released or were about to be released. This album was at a complete other level than all those other great albums. The sound that Page was able to get out of his guitar and the band in general was amazing.

YES!! LZ II is my favorite album by them as well. When I met my best friend back in 1979 (10th grade), I was introduced to this album and we obsessed over this combo track, especially Page's solo. I bought this album for my daughter a couple of years ago when she was 15. She loves classic artists (LZ, Queen, Tull, Rush, ELO, BOC, etc.), so she makes me proud. As a bass player, I'm also focused on JPJ's sound here. In addition to the overdriven sound, I think he's playing through a rotating Lesley speaker to give that "vibrating" effect when he sustains his notes. Lesley speakers are most commonly used in combination with a Hammond organ if you want to dig into that (there are videos on KZfaq that demonstrate the sound). I'd love if someone could confirm this for me. BTW, love the Icarus shirt, Rich! Last thing I want to mention is that you absolutely MUST react to the acoustic version of the Rain Song that Page/Plant did in the '90s with a string section backing them up. It is truly wonderful - and I know you will both love it (awesome lyric, too): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eMt0rM91ncq6Z4k.html

You are correct, I've never heard a bad Zeppelin song. Page has been my hero since the mid 70s. And Kel actually got his head bob just after the solo in Heartbreaker momentarily. Exactly. Love you guys.

Zeppelin would never have been...Zeppelin without Bonzo's genius. Everything in their sound is based on his unique and otherworldly groove, phrasing and dynamics. Period.

This was my first classic rock cd. I was in middle school and listening to stuff like No Doubt and Sheryl Crow. My mom showed me the light. She bought this as a birthday gift. There was no looking back.

The trick with the bass was that it was run through a rotating Leslie speaker - the kind typically used with a Hammond organ. That is where that warble comes from. The thing that Kelly is hearing with the guitar is the classic sound of a straight Gibson Les Paul into a Marshall amp with absolutely no effects other than reverb being mixed in by the engineer. Everything today is played through a string of effects and it pretty much all sounds the same. Les Paul, the 1940s-1950s jazz guitarist who designed the guitar would later comment on the specific sound that Kel is talking about - that harmonically rich whining bark. He referred to that sound on the Les Paul, saying, "People try all sorts of tones but they always end up with 'THE tone'."

Kel I am still in love with them since I got as a Christmas present in 1969. I was 10 years old and had asked for this. My parents had no idea what they were buying. I am now 60 and I rock out to them all the time still. Babe I am going to leave you is mind altering.

One thing about the Hendrix Page comparison Kel made is that 1 thing those 2 had in common is they both set the bar and just about everyone tried to emulate them. Now if I could just remember what "emulate" means 🤔

2:00 Some bands just have a special chemistry that doesn’t exist anywhere else in nature. They recorded the first album, I believe, over nine days, within two months of playing together for the first time. It doesn’t seem possible.

Led Zeppelin was part of what we used to call “album rock”. Back before playlists, you had to get up and change the record. Bands like Zeppelin, Rush and Boston put out albums that you could listen to the whole album without changing the record. Today it’s all been lost and lumped together into “classic rock”.

People ask what my top 10 bands are. My answer is a bit confusing. After Zeppelin, Floyd, Beatles, Stones, and Genesis. Who all stand above the rest. The actual top 10. The Who, Queen, the Eagles , etc. It’s so hard to put an order. Other than the the first 5 which are “ over and above”the list. You guys are awesome!!

LED ZEPPELIN II their greatest Album a masterpiece from beginning to end. They have mad other good albums but ZEP II stands above all of them from Whole Lotta Love the opener to the closing Bring It On Home it still sounds as fresh as it did in 1968.
