The misty mountains is a reference to the Hobbit. Led Zeppelin makes Hobbit and Lord of the Rings references in many of their songs, over a period of many years. They were huge JRR Tolkien fans.

Misty Mountain takes me back to the 70's instantly. Black light room, R Crumb posters, thick Weed smell and all.

Bonham's drumming makes my eyes water. So damn great. Like Floyd , there will never be another. Not even close.

As someone who spent Sunday afternoons in the Sydney Domain, a large park, in the early 1970s with other hippies I know exactly what this song is all about.

One of my favorite Led Zeppelin lines: "If you go down to the streets today baby, you better open your eyes." When you go outside , be alert. Good advice from Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham.

You guys are a great combo. Lex always has great insight into the music and you can see she just really appreciates music of many genres. While Brad often looks like an old man listening to music of a younger generation, thinking, what is this stuff? I love it!

Pretty insightful Lex. Once you give led Zeppelin a little time you realize the complexity and the composition. Always heavily layered. This tune is great for the hippie vibe that appeals to teenage and young adult freedom of the times.

funny you should mention "Black Dog" this was released on the B-side of the Black Dog record. vocals were all Plant using his Amazing voice with jpj on electric piano and harmonizing with Page's guitar and with the band switching it up to different time signatures and Bonzo's double base drum holding it all down. Watch one of the Live versions and you can clearly see there are no "tricks of the trade" being used - Pure Talent. As far as the meaning it starts off with a bunch of peaceful people getting arrested for marijuana and goes on to speak of and wish / dream of living in a better world.

I think they are singing about being in a park and meeting a bunch of hippies and hanging out getting stoned and what happened while doing so or possibly what he was thinking about.

This song is very much a trippy hippie song. For reference: "Tea" was a double entendre of the day, meaning marijuana. A lot of the 60s idealism had gotten melded into clique-ish activism by the early 1970s, & you'll hear veiled counter-cultural and "tune in, drop out" messages in lots of mostly complex, intricate rock artists between 69-73. Not only Pink Floyd (Fearless is another great example of a trippy hippie classic that never made it on rock radio), but also from the Rolling Stones, King Crimson, Black Sabbath, CSNY, The Band, The Grateful Dead, and Elton John (Burn Down the Mission, 11/17/70, I shall say no more). As will undoubtedly be mentioned elsewhere here, the "Misty" mountain is a reference to Tolkien, one of many, many allusions to him in songs about journeys and struggles within Zeppelin's catalog.

Nice job Lex... Zeppelin needs to be absorbed. Over time this became my favorite Zeppelin tune.

Yep, layered track on Plant's vocals. "This sounds like it's from upside-down world." Ahhh, the 70's. A great time for music and a great time to be a kid, and we're headed back that way again, 'cept probably a bit worse and certainly more dangerous. I really hope that some great music can come out of the 2020's, maybe people will slow down, stop watching TV and get back to a creative mentality. Many would say that the autotoned music of today heard on the radio, seriously pales in comparison to the raw, honest as sunshine expression of soul belief in what they were doing back then combined with new tones of distortion and harmonic balance woven into and often made of, their musicianship with each other in the groups. They took the pop, r&b and soul of music of the past, put on a new set of tires, dropped in a Hemi and stomped it to the floor just to see what it could do.

The 70's were and extremely creative time period fo music and art. Artists and musicians just went in all directions experimenting. Many times the rules were just ignored and we got gems like this. Musically Led Zeppelin especially went in all kinds of directions. I think because it was a time when freedom and the will to do whatever we wanted, when we wanted, was on the minds of every kid and young adult. Loads of different Drugs helped too. 

Do the Crunge next just to mess with Brad. It proves Zeppelin can play anything, including Funk.

OK, please hear me. I'm a subscriber and I've been watching you guys for some time now. I also watch a lot of the other reaction video providers on KZfaq. I don't know what else you two are into, but I really think you hit a niche for yourselves with your reaction vids. As far as I'm concerned, you're the best thing going right now. Especially for us old timers who love watching young people getting high on our generation's music. This gives me, and old dogs like me, a chance to relive the magic of that era, and experience the whole thing again vicariously through your eyes. I'm crowding 60 years old and I cut my rock 'n roll teeth on Led Zeppelin and so many of the other bands of the 60's, 70's. And I guess about halfway into the 80's. Sidenote: I think when Van Halen broke up after the release of their album, "1984", that marked the beginning of the end for that entire era of Rock. Anyway, I deeply appreciate that you take the time to go back and explore the music of my generation. In my estimation it was the platinum age of Rock music. In my youth, you could take off walking through the streets of your own neighborhood on any given Friday or Saturday evening, and just follow the music to a party where there would be some garage band kickin' it and everybody spread out on the lawn, up the driveway and in the back yard. Blankets laid out and everybody getting high and jammin'. All the pretty girls in their hip-huggers and bell bottom jeans with chain belts, sitting in groups, (yeah, some of them even had flowers in their hair) laughing at the guys who were in steep competition to get their attention. All you'd have to do is walk past once, and act like you forgot something and walk by again, and it would be just like in this song. They'd invite you to get high with them, and stay a while. Perfect strangers! Next thing you know, you just made a gaggle of new friends. They'd probably be gone by the end of the summer, because in that day, renters, especially hippie renters, moved around a lot. For me, it was really the finest time to grow up. I don't want to say you kids "missed" something, because I'm sure you have similar memories and a love like ours for the times you grew up in. All that said, and bless you for sticking with me here; didn't mean to write a book, but it's my belief that Led Zeppelin is the greatest of all time. I guess nowadays they say, the GOAT. Anybody who comes from my generation who disagrees with that, literally does not know what they're talking about. There are two categories of rock band. In one category, there are all the bands in the world, except for one. And that one is the band that occupies the other category, all by themselves. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, Led Zeppelin. They did more top-scoring music in more different genre, than any band on Earth. But that's not what really sets them apart. They lived what they wrote about. They lived their music. A good example is the song, Kashmir, which, buy the way, you guys did an excellent reaction for. They were in Morocco and Tibet and India, and yes, the ever-disputed territory of Kashmir when they got the inspirations for this song and a lot of the other songs on those two or three albums they released during that stretch of their career. In other words, they didn't go into a studio and just like, "ok what are we gonna write songs about?" They lived it. When they say, "I sit with elders of a gentle race, whose world is seldom seen", they actually did. Anyways, please keep up the awesome work. I always anticipate your next post with angst. Brad! You are the technical guy. You love structure, and you expect things to make sense. Which they should. I'm right there with you. Lex, you are awesome! I love your love for music, and how you jump on board and seem to be all in for a good time. You're like me in that sense; music is a natural high, and sometimes it isn't as structured as the logical mind often unfairly demands. You are the balancing factor in the equation and the two of you together make one hell of a Yin and Yang. DO. NOT. STOP. I love you guys. Peace!

Brad and Lex. I'm glad to see you checking out some classic rock masterpieces by Led Zeppelin. For those who were alive and old enough to appreciate the music (early teens and up), Led Zeppelin's entrance into the world of music brought a new and unique sound. No other bands at the time sounded like Led Zeppelin. To have experienced that transition of the music of that time period leaves a very special imprint in one's memory. Led Zeppelin brought blues to another level through electric guitars and electric basses and with the big driving sound of John Bonham's drums. As you have discovered, Led Zeppelin had more dimensions than just blues. Robert Plant's voice and vocals....nobody else sounds like him. He could raise the roof in one song and then sing a gentle ballad like "Thank You," one you have reviewed. Then there is Jimmy Page on guitar. A master of that stringed instrument. John Paul Jones who played bass and keyboards, had some classical music training. Led Zeppelin paved the way for what would become heavy metal. I have been enjoying watching your videos for the past couple days. Keep up the good work and looking forward to seeing more "Reaction Videos" on your channel.

Zeppelin definitely gets better and better the more you listen to it. I've been listening to them for decades and it never gets old. Each time I concentrate on a different part. Lyrics, percussion, bass, guitar, rhythm, the whole, and back again to individual parts. It never gets old. I guess that's how I can get lost in them listening for literally the several hundredth time and never get tired of it. There's some really good songs out there but I tire of them after a while. But Led Zeppelin has sustained since I was a little kid and now I'm old. Still, I can get lost and sent rocking out to them.

On an album full of timeless classics, this is actually my favourite song.

This is their hippy trippy song. It makes me feel like I'm in Golden Gate Park tripping on shrooms in the early 70's & so is everyone else. And we just have a great day & go to a new friends house & party the hippy way.

I was blessed to see Led Zeppelin in Toronto, September 4th 1971. I was 15 years old. Their 4th album from which this song is on debuted on November 8th, 1971. From that album they played Stairway To Heaven, Black dog, and Going To California. It was a prelude to yet another classic rock album by Zeppelin. I will never forget that show.

This is one of the few Zep tracks where Jimmy Page sings backing vocals. The track that follows this on the album is really great too.

This song, The Battle of Evermore and Ramble On are songs that reference and were slightly inspired by The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit. The Misty Mountains were the first destination that Bilbo and the Dwarves were going to.

Okay kids we can use the words psychoacoustics actually technically he's singing in harmony but the backup Harmony is not in the key of the song or the chord structure it's what they call a tunnel it's out of key you know you hear somebody singing out a key and you're like oh man but the thing is is he keeps doing it consistently through the whole verse so your mind kind of accepts it even though it is out of key I would love to do this song live but it's kind of hard to figure out the harmony it's hard to separate the two you know it's cut all the guitars and drums on top of it kind of hard to hear it there's this guy Rick beato he's got some kind of Technology where you can bring out the vocals of the guitar part you can actually separate it some sort of a digital process so actually there is a technology so maybe somehow I could figure something like this out I've got a general idea of what the notes are but I'm not 100% certain you got to love Bonham's drumming though oh my gosh I mean you know he comes up over the keyboard part and does this beat and then resolves with the downbeat alrighty you goofy dim bulbs now you're not dim bulbs I'm just kidding though just a term of endearment

There's a Wurlitzer Electric Piano or Fender Rhodes following the vocals... keep on listening and persevering Brad, it will make sense eventually as it is music for higher minds, and you're raising your mind without realising it listening to this old music.... Lex is killing it.... you can see by the joy on her face .... all this old music is designed like this... Just wait until you discover YES, ELP, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rush and King Crimson....
