Your reaction to Led Zeppelin is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! You have been bitten by the LZ bug. Please check out all the older live songs. 69' was the best yr I believe. They were raw...powerful...took no prisoners. GREATEST EVER ROCK N ROLL BLUES BAND IN HISTORY. GREATEST SINGER DRUMMER BASS/ KEYBOARD ARTIST ..JPJ...GREATEST LEAD GUITARIST JIMMY PAGE. Just keep playing their old stuff. Try the live version of I Cant Quit You Baby....Whole Lotta Love....Lemon Song...Youll love them all. Keep up the great work. Best reactions Ive seen so far. @@DLynn Don't listen to anyone saying to listen to live versions of a song first. Any live version of any song (as good as it may be) is always a variation that can only be appreciated when you have heard the original first for context. Also, I agree with Scott. There’s a little bit of something for everyone when it comes to Zeppelin. Their genre range is vast. Blues, funk, full spectrum of rock styles, reggae, folk, samba, country, electronic art house rock. Sometimes they mix all that stuff up into something that’s undefinable-but amazing.

As a matter of fact Zeppelin was so interested in American blues that they blatantly stole songs and arrangements from some of our greatest black artists. The got sued by Willie Dixon who wrote every other blues song you’ve ever heard and we’re forced to pay the man $1,000,000 USD. Listen to some Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf and you’ll hear exactly what Zep was up to. Don’t get me wrong, I love them. Just stating facts.

Robert Plant was deep into blues before coming into Led Zeppelin. He was still a kid when he went to see the likes of Bukka White. Plant didn't sing the blues to exploit it as pop music. It was and is part of his soul. Plant is not afraid to sing with emotion. He was so often the "victim" in his songs. It was called the blues for a reason. Plant's contemporaries, the Mick Jaggers and Rod Stewarts, sang with the swagger of men who loved them and left them. For that reason any trip through the best covers of Led Zeppelin songs will find women singers at the top of the list.

Page is also producer on this track (as he was throughout), but pays attention to all the elements. As for 'Percy' Plant, a presumably apocryphal story relates one occasion when the PA system failed during a gig and he could still be heard above the band at the back of the venue. I have my doubts. Not ignoring the rest of the group, John Paul Jones on keys and the beast John Bonham laying down those drums. The folk element, for the sake of future research, comes more into play on Led Zeppelin 3 that probably any of their other albums and may even have contributed to it being a slower seller - fans having come to expect the heavier sound of the previous two.

Duddette, you gotta do the live version from Madison Square Garden. Takes this song to a whole new level. Jimmy Page was a studio musician other bands would hire to play the guitar parts their guitarists couldn't before Zeppelin. So not surprising you hear all sorts of influences. Zeppelin is primarily a rock band but they are not one of those bands that didn't evolve from each album. To me Physical Graffiti is their best album. You know it's Zeppelin from the start but it dosn't sound like any other album they or anyone else ever did. It's got a blues and funk and folk sort of thing all mixed in with the rock.

Also...I personally like Plant's vocals best when he stays lower and belts. He could belt the blues like few white men could dream of. He just didn't do it often. Listen to his voice in the latter part of I'm Gonna Crawl, Trampled Under Foot, or Wraring and Tearing. Its amazing.

You should check out "Gallows Pole" on that same album for something totally different. About a guy at the gallows asking the hangman to wait before pulling the rope. 1st waiting for friends to give him something to bribe the hangman, then for brother, then for sister, but all for naught. And if you want some BLUES, to rock, back to BLUES, check out "Bring it on Home" on 1st album.

Jimmy Page came from the Yardbirds before he created Led Zeppelin. The Yardbirds were a psychedelic/rock/blues band who at one time or another had guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. Zep has a variety of styles besides hard rock/heavy blues such as ethereal soundscapes, epics, ballads, folk, acoustic, funk and a hint of prog rock. Please do more Led Zeppelin! Go through their catalogue and pick one at random; their musical diversity is on point.

I think you'll find Zep brings a lot of moods and emotions. I'm a huge Zep fan so let me know if you have any questions; I'm happy to help. My recommendation is to go in album and track order because you'll miss a lot of their gems if you go by requests alone.

@@DLynn Yes, D. Lynn all 4 members at their prime. Robert Plant would later have throat surgery in 1973, so 1972 is the last year of their youth I would say. Still the best live band ever, but by 1973 years of touring and drugs and alcohol abuse definitely started to take a toll on this band, like many others.

They were the band everyone came to emulate, both on the stage and off. They would rent the entire top floor of the Hyatt Hotel... John Bonham rode a motor cycle into the pool lmao. We can call it a Blues with a tinge of Rock -- you will find LED ZEPPELIN to have a wide range of styles but not necessarily all mixed in same song. You are welcome to scrutinise the musical landscape they are offering in their catalogue. They also have a number of Bluesy songs beyond this one. This song 1971.

When you said you recognized the Blues influence I thought you might reference B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf or Buddy Guy. But I'm guessing you haven't discovered them yet. There's a lot of great music out there in the world from may different genres. I hope you investigate the Blues more. BTW the lyric, "I open my front door I hear the back door slam, I must have one of them new fangled..." , This line is lifted from a classic blues number.

I have never heard a musical performance with this level of raw emotion before (and I heard it when it was first released), and I'm sure I never will.
