You were mislead by irresponsible Zeppelin fans. You always listen to the studio version before the live version. It’s imperative to do that for context on the live track. It’s the only way to get the true Zeppelin experience. That’s how everyone else had it. They listened to the album then went to the concert.

I agree with you 100%. The true genius of Led Zeppelin was not only in the artistry and virtuosity of 4 of the greatest musicians to ever grace the planet, but also in the musical wizardry of Jimmy Page's studio productions. The live versions can be cool snippets of the bands mindset at a particular moment in time, or of their improvised interpretation of the material on any give night in front of 20,000 intoxicated fans, but the true genius of the band was what they achieved in the studio, and that was how they wanted the songs to be heard in perpetuity. And of course, this was achieved in the studio by one of the greatest music producers to ever live, and his name is Jimmy Page. Peace

Yes always listen to the studio version first - that is exactly how the band wanted that song to sound - so they committed it to record. Live versions are to see their true virtuosity in a given moment in time - and live is never the same twice
@stevedahlberg8680
@stevedahlberg8680 Жыл бұрын
I guess it depends upon the situation but with LED zeppelin, most of us heard it on the radio first and then got the record album and then if you are lucky you would just go see them in concert. I wasn't quite old enough for that and missed it by a few years. But I owned all of their albums and played them all the time. But yeah man the live version is interesting in order to get a better feel for what they were like on stage, and I always as a musician can totally relate to any sort of live performance, it's easy to put myself in their shoes. But this song and the Led Zeppelin content in general is such a damn masterpiece, it seems a shame not to encounter it and it's pristine and original delivery before adding all the other stuff in of a live performance. One thing that I've never heard pulled off very well although kind of sometimes is the ending of this, where they reach the same ending point through different tempos and they merged together just right so you feel that tension when the wave patterns cross and then they just perfectly draw together by the final note.

My thoughts.... Music comes from our souls (lyrically, vocally and instrumentally). The debate over Live vs Studio version boils down to a "Soul" thing. While NONE of us will argue that "Stairway To Heaven" is a masterpiece, the debate over Live or Studio versions RAGES ON.... and IMO, the debate boils down to what vibes with your soul most. Some of us really vibe with Live performances and some vibe more with Studio tracks..... Neither side is wrong.... we just feel it on different "wave-lengths". I fell in love with the studio version on the radio but then..... I saw the Live MSG performance and it hit me on a whole other level!!! I prefer seeing/hearing live performances whenever possible (for any of the groups that I love). It's more pure to me.... not tainted with all the technology and sound engineering. It's simply more human. But again, that's just a soul thing and there is no right or wrong.... ;)

Many times, live versions, while full of energy, are often muddled for one reason or another ( alcohol ,drugs, etc...) Studio versions are meticulously gone over again and again till they are as crisp and clean as they can be produced. I saw them live on a good night and it was wonderful! Some of their concerts are cringeworthy. Just my opinion! 🙂

People love live versions because they already know the studio version, know all the lyrics, and then want to check it out live after they're already completely familiar with the song. Anyone checking out any song for the first time should always check out the studio version first. There's only a handful of bands (maybe less) that can pull off sounding the same live as they do in the studio. Live versions tend to incorporate the audience where the singer will sing a part, then hold out the microphone to have the audience sing the next part etc.. Bands also add words and do things different live, which is cool for the ppl there because they already know the song. But it's not so cool for someone hearing a song for the first time to truly understand the lyrics and the meaning to start out with live versions. Queensryche live in Tokyo 1984 is the only one I can think of off the top of my head that I would rather hear live even if I wasn't familiar with the studio version.

i agree that the studio versions of songs in general sound better. However, sometimes Live concerts can be just as good. I know because I saw (LZ) LED ZEPPELIN live at Kezar Stadium SAN FRANCISCO. Every song was like a studio-produced song. UNBELIEVABLE. There is no better Rock band than LZ.
