When The Levee Breaks is a country blues song written and first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. The lyrics are about the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. After the flood there was a migration north (Chicago) because there was so much destruction that there was no work and no where to live. A levee is a ridge of sediment deposited naturally along the side of a river by overflowing waters or it can be man-made to keep rising flood waters of a river from flooding a city or urban area.

According to Wikipedia, the flooding covered 70,000 square km (27,000 square miles) at a depth of up to 9 m (30 feet). It caused 250 million to 1 billion dollars (in 1927 dollars!) in damages.

I just recently discovered Led Zeppelin for me. I don’t know why I thought I wouldn’t like their style when growing up. I grew up with 90’s music so I never thought to even listen to them back then. I got into Pink Floyd and some other bands of my parents’ generation but Led Zeppelin escaped me somehow. And I can’t get enough of them now. They’re great. Just magnificent.

It happens to many people -- there is so much music - great music, but we're influenced by various things that pull us in directions - and then certain bands stay on the periphery of our lives until we're ready or open to really hearing them.

This song is gritty, raw, dirty; it's backwater Mississippi delta blues music. I agree with you regarding Zep. Jimmy has said so himself that it was four master musicians, who, after combining their talents, became an alchemical reaction that created Led Zeppelin - a new entity. Zeppelin is always a journey. For me, this song's heavy, thunderous groove carves furrows into your brain until it becomes blues infused goo. Thanks for the reaction.

A levee is a earthen dam built to hold back swollen rivers so they don't overflow on to the land. Old blues song from the 1920s about floods in Mississippi. Millions of African Americans immigrated from the South to northern cities, many went to and settled in Chicago. It's the final track on their fourth album. Yeah, that album was that good. I just gave it a listen the other day.

You need to watch “Moby Dick”, it’s a drum solo, and you will see he doesn’t hit that hard. He’s powerful, but he’s also mic’ed up really well. Levee is a cover of a song about the Mississippi River floods in the 1920’s, and the migration to Chicago from the South. Robert Plant plays the harmonica and Jimmy Page is using a slide. Have you reacted to “In My Time of Dying”? The live version at Earl’s Court is excellent. Jimmy is using a slide in this song as well, and Robert’s vocals are great. Bonzo, as always, is tremendous.

This song was originally recorded in 1929 by the legendary blues guitarist Memphis Minnie and her husband, Kansas Joe McCoy. It tells the story of "The Great Mississippi Flood" of 1927 that destroyed countless homes and livestock, and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, the majority of them being African Americans. Many African American families chose to go find work in northern cities like New York, Baltimore, and especially, Chicago. This is because Chicago was the transportation and industrial hub of the country and there were tons of jobs available in the stockyards and factories, and jobs in transportation, like railroad porters.

"When the Levee Breaks" is a country blues song written and first recorded by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie in 1929. The lyrics reflect experiences during the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. "When the Levee Breaks" was re-worked by English rock group Led Zeppelin as the last song on their untitled fourth album. Singer Robert Plant used many of the original lyrics and the songwriting is credited to Memphis Minnie and the individual members of Led Zeppelin.

Led Zeppelin was a perfect example of something that is greater than the sum of its parts. All four were outstanding musicians, but together they became something off the scale. I never saw them play live, but I was lucky enough to see the Plant and Page "No Quarter" tour, with Jason Bonham on drums. It was incredible. I'm really enjoying seeing young people appreciating them today, thank you! If you want to try some other tracks, have a listen to The Battle of Evermore (LZ IV) (with the amazing Sandy Denny on guest vocals), The Ocean (Houses/Holy) (my favourite alongside Kashmir and this (When the Levee Breaks)) and for something a bit different Thank You (LZ II)

1968 - Before there was a Led Zep there was "Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Donovan. Both Allan Holdsworth and Jimmy Page play the electric guitars (Page wrote in his auto-bio this is true), and John Paul Jones both arranged the music and played bass. On drums was Clem Cattini, though many contend still that John Bonham also contributed some of the drum track.

I don't think I've heard a bad Led Zeppelin song yet. The song was based on an old blues song from about 100 years ago, I believe about a flood in the southern United States. Crazy to think that Led Zeppelin 4, the album with Levee, also had Stairway to Heaven as well and has been out 50 years. Timeless music. Hard to find music in 2021 that will be even close in making an influence or impact.

A levee is a big berm that is constructed to keep a river from flooding during storms. Levees usually run parallel to the river, and are often right next to the river.

The song is inspired by an old Delta blues number. The levees were on the Mississippi to prevent flooding. There was a big agricultural industry, cotton and other things around there, and a lot of workers, and share croppers were all around the river. There are some notable delta blues songs about the floods down there, such as Charlie Patton's water, and "When the levee breaks" by Memphis Minnie, and Kansas Joe McCoy. It was the land where the blues began, and Chicago was the next step because a lot of delta musicians moved there, and started playing electric blues.

To get a sense of the importance of levees, you only have to look for vids about Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Mississippi got the full wrath of the hurricane itself and it looked like New Orleans dodged a bullet at first. And then the levees failed and the water flooded parts of New Orleans. Many people died and others left homeless. Quite a few evacuated to Houston, Tx, and many stayed leaving New Orleans behind. In 1975 I was a student at the University of Miami and had a minor in climatology. My professor went on and on about the levee system and how much of the city of New Orleans is below sea level and that some day they would fail and people would die. So, 30 years later, that's exactly what happened.

You were right at the start: "sounds like thunder," then later you said "Its a huricane; it's a storm." When the rains come and the levee made of earth holding back the water fails, there will be a massive flood, as happened in real life.
