Led Zeppelin formed in 1968 and went on to become one of the most influential, innovative, and successful groups in modern music, having sold more than 300 million albums worldwide. The band rose from the ashes of The Yardbirds, when Jimmy Page brought in John Bonham, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant to tour as The New Yardbirds. In 1969, Led Zeppelin released its self-titled debut which was produced by Page, as were all the subsequent albums. It marked the beginning of a 12-year reign, during which the group was widely considered to be the biggest and most innovative rock band in the world.

I was in my room one night, probably 15 years ago, trying to sleep. I was suddenly awoken to the bass opening of this song. I went downstairs and there’s my dad, sitting at the dimly lit kitchen table, his amp and bass guitar plugged in playing along to Dazed and Confused. He felt like a jam session in the middle of the night. I couldn’t get mad at that. Sometimes, even when your kids are trying to sleep, you just gotta get the Led out!

Skelter was certainly heavy for it's time, but listen to Dazed and Confused from 3:28 - 5.26 minute mark - you hear an extremely intense fast bass lick like never before, powerful loud drumming, and Page's blaring guitar riffs, all combining to create a sublime sound for heavy metal that had never been heard before. The breakdown is incredible. It's all about call and response. Of course, you have Page and Plant doing their thing, but in the background, holding the groove, you can hear JPJ and Bonham doing the same thing. It's incredible, the more I listen the better this song gets.

Not exactly the same, but it was my birthday gift to my nephew of ten years, after Deep Purple's In Rock at his ninth, following an electric guitar from his parents the Christmas before. Followed by Dire Straits' Love over Gold for his eleventh birthday. Not sure at the moment, but maybe it's Jethro Tull's Aqualung next year. He likes to hear all these albums when he goes to sleep. :)

It was also their most self-indulgent number live, with Page screeching away for a half-hour on his guitar with a violin bow. Weakest track on an otherwise damn good debut album.

Nope. The Beatles put out the best catalogue of rock ever. And they did it all in 7 1/2 years. Zeppelin lost it after 'Physical Graffiti' and the great Earls Court shows in '75. 'Presence' and 'In Through the Out Door' were sub-par, and on the final 1977 US tour, Page was so wacked on heroin that he often played out-of-tune on many nights.

I love that Helluva boss used a remix of this song in episode six. It really fit well with the episode.
