Lee Konitz passed away on April 15, 2020 - 1 month after this was put on KZfaq.

Thank you for this. I first heard Lee play in the 70’s in a little bar on the East Side called Gregory’s. Each night he played was a revelation.

Qué maestro, dios santo. Pide y es exigente con la música y con su instrumento, por ende de él mismo. Una ética increíble a esa edad, ahora dicen que está dejando de tocar.

Legend. He was on great terms with Bird. Found it necessary to create a sound and rhythmic approach to alto saxophone that departed from Bird’s own revolutionary approach. I’ve seen and met him over the years. Excruciatingly shy. Also demanding. This is a typical musical situation for LK. An atonal, impromptu piece. He first did this back in 1949 with the Lennie Tristano group.
