This scene is so great because they did not have to show a single person dying, not even a CGI satellite moving and targeting people. Just a flick of a wrist to show how powerful Brother Day is. That is masterful.

@@MrFerparedes well, wiping every body out does make sense. If something (Azura’s actions) did manage to happen, then it was a consequence of something (her ancestry and relationships). Wiping everything out made sure that it has a much lower chance of happening again.

What's scary is that it's the humanity he felt in himself that propels this level of cruelty and ruthlessness. He was genuinely hurt at the fact that he was put in the position of extinguishing someone who he nurtured as if he was his own son, imprinted his nuances and qualities on to and being robbed of any "legacy", which is precisely what he told Azura he would be doing to her. He stated that he purged even the faintest trace of her impact in the world.

There a still quite many places where dictatorial regimes oppress their people in just this way. They come in different guises and appearances, but they all pursue the same goal: power over others. Orwell described this perfectly in his epic novel "1984." I remember the saying: There are three deaths: the first is when the body ceases to function. The second is when the body is consigned to the grave. The third is that moment, sometime in the future, when your name is spoken for the last time.

I think the end of the episode shows that she didn't want to do it. Like when she's talking to the holy woman she says that her programing would override her will and force her to kill her. I think the second season could show her trying to purge her core programming so nothing can stop her free will again.

The beauty of this ruthlessness is that EVERYTHING up until he told her what he'd do too her personally could've been complete bullshit, because she'll never get the opportunity to find out before she's removed from the events of the world. The despair can come entirely from his delivery of the narrative, a narrative that she'll think is real as she spends as much time as it takes for her body to wear out running it over and over again in her mind. Infinitely easier than actually carrying out any of what he said, and the only verfiably real actions can all be done with basic available tech.

May I ask, what was the main cause of your disappointment? This is the first sci-fi show in a while that I've truly enjoyed and felt had some top tier writing. For me this is filled the void that was left by Star Wars. Though I have not read the Foundation novels so perhaps that is what I am missing. Still, I found Demerzel and Cleon to both be extremely compelling characters and the whole Dusk, Day and Dawn idea seems very well thought out. Jared Harris as Hari Seldon was also top notch. @ciarandwynvil273
@ciarandwynvil273 10 ай бұрын
I respectfully disagree. The conspirators have nothing better to offer, and the Cleons have been pretty good shepherds for the people of the empire. Even Salvor's daddy admitted that he had had it good in the empire. His parents were of the upper working class, no nobles or anything, and they enjoyed damn good lives. That he chose to follow a religious zealot into an exile, well, that's not exactly the emperors' fault. He just said that the good stuff he had gladly enjoyed had been built on lies - but what lies he meant, that got never specified. Until Hari came along with his predictions of doom, the empire was a stable realm, predictable, orderly, and not prone to cruelties towards its population. That is not a small deal, and it speaks well of the ruling dynasty. Alas, it seems that a few malcontents were hell bent not to respect and enjoy the peace.

exactly how I felt. the series, sadly, are a mess, but Cleon storyline is quite good and Lee Pace makes it legendary. I soon became annoyed when the story would cut to other plots, relieved and enthralled when it returned to Empire.

Exactly. Terence Mann and Jared Harris also helped carry the show. Other than that, the only other strength were the visual effects. The actresses who played Gaal and Salvor were boring as hell.

It remind me of a Manga where the antagonist is finally defeated and getting the worst punishment ever. This person is basically stripped for his entire senses, and kept alive forever. Eventually we saw how they do this. They are basically remove his brain and then put it in some safety glass container with life support. He is alive and still aware but cannot do anything and cannot sense anything. At the end, the main character is finally decided to forgive him and turn off the life support.

Find me one parent that wouldn't at the very least consider this before you say he was ruthless. The most damage most of us could do to our child's murderer would be to kill him but that is only because we are who we are. EM...no? First Brother Dawn wasn't killed by her, he got betrayed by her. That doesn't justify that kind of punishment. Demerzel killed Brother Dawn because Dawn was different (due to the fact that his DNA was altered and that wasn't Azuras fault; since she is supposed to be the same age as Dawn she was practically a baby back then when they messed with the Cleon's DNA) Also, if someone is different it is not a reason to kill him/her. If your child was betrayed and you come up with that kind of punishment (killing all the people who had something to do with the betrayer, putting the betrayer in a cell, chained and sensory shrouded for a lifetime which is far worse than what the betrayer did) makes you basically a psychopath. Really, I am worried by your statement "if you have the ressources..." and that others agree to it. Brother Day is a psychopath. He is pure sadistic here. He is not angry at Demerzel for killing Dawn. He is just a power hungry egocentric maniac who loves to scare people who are socially below him and to punish them to satisfy his sadistic tendencies.

Cleon is turning out to be an incredibly compelling villain. I find villains to be most compelling when their actions lie within some kind of moral grey area. For example, Cleon did brutally cull half of the population of two whole planets, but it was in response to a catastrophic terror attack. And as he points out, he has to be a leader and sometimes has to make decisions without considering the individual. If he considered every individual then he would not be able to make the difficult decisions that need to be made in order to keep the peace. The fact that he gives some justification for his heinous actions makes him a very interesting character to me. I believe that he believes he is doing the right thing.
@soul.searcher333
@soul.searcher333 2 жыл бұрын
Well this Brother Day Cleon is very different from Brother Dusk Cleon (the Cleon that culled 2 planets). The latter was arrogantly sadistic which you can notice the difference in behaviour with the former (Brother Dawn all grown up). This is actually such brilliant acting on the part of Lee pace and the guy that plays Brother Dusk, as while they look exactly the same there is differentiation in the actions/behaviour
@soul.searcher333
@soul.searcher333 2 жыл бұрын
But yeah, the Brother Dusk (Brother Day in the first episode) is incredibly cruel and has no moral justification for his actions. He enjoys his absolute power and does not hide it (think of the scenes with that arrogant smug grin, one that this Day lacks)

Pure spite. He thinks he has erased her and the plot from history, but he remembers and it will shape his actions going forward. Will he tell the Cleon's that follow him? Will he also erase those that researched her constellation and wielded the particle beam weapons? Great, disturbing scene. An example of the control authoritarians always wish they had.

I think the punishment may not be as prolonged as Day would have wished. That sort of sensory deprivation is likely to wig out Azura and turn her into a mindless vegetable. Even being in a float tank overnight can leave people a bit "weird". And there is still some sensory input happening. So the chances of Azura zoning out into zombie status and not remaining "aware" are quite high. Still pretty nasty though.

Having a massive (on a galactic scale) drug program to keep possible malcontents docile has the potential to backfire and make the “regular joe” citizen concerned for their personal liberty. A great authoritarian system is invisible in it’s repression, like Day in this scene.

I am so glad I wasn't the only person freaked out with this scene. I assume that they have the technology to basically keep Azura alive in complete sensory deprivation almost indefinitely. Truly a fate worse than death. I couldn't sleep that night because I couldn't get the thought of that out of my head. At the end of that exchange, I hope Azura did a header into the concrete slab before the guards came to take her away. It would take a lot of will power to off herself, but that was her only chance to avoid the hell that awaited her.
