I have been taking a look at the brand new Lee Ultimate Turret press and putting it through its paces. This intended to be just introduction to the press I do get into quite a bit of detail. I plan to make a more detailed video in the future.

I got mine yesterday and you are spot on about the indexing issues. Coming off of the classic turret I am not a fan of the new system. The only advantage is now I can use the bullet feeder. Honestly for the money I can't see it worth not using your fingers to insert the bullets. Great video.

Sorry about your experiance. My first impression was disappointment. I slept on it and gave it a second chance. Two things that help so far. Pull the turret and lube the thrust plate (flat plate) and outside diamater with some thick wheel bearing grease, not thick just thin and even. This will slow it down. Next, just slow a little at the bottom of the stroke as the clutch disengages. Bit of a feel thing. Yeah, its not optimal and its going to need an update but ive knocked out quite a few rounds with decent speed. best of luck.

Man, I wish they would have come out with this 5 or 6 years ago. I probably have nearly a dozen 4 hole turrets loaded up. With storage for them all.But I am like you I really like the turret over the progressive as I get older. And teaching newbies one case at a time over 5 cases at a time will soothe the nerves. :) Now if the bushings didn't cost more than a 4 hole turret. Thanks for the video.

I get you, I have a bunch of turrets and it isn't lost on me that Lee just created a market for breech lock bushings LOL. Bottom line, I didn't need this press but I am enjoying it.

You have long been my go to guy for Lee Turret stuff. I've been using my Classic for maybe nine years now and have made a lot of rounds with it. Over time I've learned it's foibles and idiosyncrasies and I'm quite comfortable with it. I only load my pistol cartridges with it, using an RCBS Rock Chucker for my more carefully made rifle rounds. This was my first exposure to the new press. Outside of the bullet feeder, I'm not sure I see any advantage over the way I load now. I can already see Lee's famed "fiddling with" design in the indexing scheme which I understand is necessary with the variable number of dies feature. I'll be looking forward to your follow up videos. Had this been available 10 years ago I may have chosen it. But as it stands I'm fine with what I have.

Thanks for you kind words Sir, means a lot! I don't think the LCT press is going anywhere any time soon, its great. I think there will be quite a few folks who just stick with the classic turret press. I will say, the addition of the bullet feeder is really big and not just for convenience. It sets the bullets in perfectly straight on the case, better than I can do by hand. Thanks again.

I watched in stages a Johnny's Reloading Bench video on the RCBS Rebel kit that was over 6 hours long. It's always worth the watch if the content creator is fun and competent and if the subject matter is worth it. Please make the long version of the video, I've really been enjoying your content on the Lee Presses and auto-drum/auto-disc powder measuring.

This is the press I've been waiting for! Please make more content on this since you have so much experience with the other lee turret presses. Maybe do some more detailed comparison videos of this vs the less classic and value turret. It's such a new press there is very little video content on it right now.

I am new to the whole reloading game and I have been watching as many videos as I possibly can from various KZfaqrs.. and doing as much research as I can before deciding on what brand and press to go with before making my first purchase. Ok.. at first I though.. start off with a single stage press as a beginner.. take your time and learn the craft one step at a time. Now.. I am not completely new to reloading as I have been reloading 12ga for years.. and I know reloading for 12ga is much more forgiving than reloading brass.. and I had my mind set on getting the RCBS Rockchucker single stage press (I should mention that I will be starting of reloading for 2 rifle rounds - 6.5 Creedmoor and 7.62x39.. and the only 2 pistol rounds I will be reloading for will be 9mm and 44Mag) I then thought about starting off with one of the Lee Classic Challenger Breech lock kits that give you everything you need to get started (except the dies and calipers) - Currently.. I had made my mind up and I was planning on buying the Lee Classic Turret Press.. to me it just makes more sense than a single stage press.. and I feel like the Turret press would be right up my alley as I already spent some time researching it and understanding it's operation.. and it would be perfectly suited for the type of reloading that I want to be doing. This is the very first in depth video I have watched on this newer Lee Ultimate Turret press.. and although it seems very impressive.. Im sure it retails for quite a bit more than a Lee Classic Turret Press.. and for me PRICE is super important as I am on a budget.. and there are still lots of other reloading tools that I will also still need to buy like a brass tumbler.. powder thrower.. brass case trimmer.. and the actual dies for each caliber.. and in the end it all adds up! (I will also be casting my own bullets as well as using factory made bullets) I think my mind is made up.. and I still plan to buy the Lee Classic Turret Press next week! This was an AWESOME video.. and as a new subscriber to your channel I really appreciate the time you took to explain everything so in depth! If you have any advice for me as a newbie just starting out on my journey into the world of brass reloading.. I would welcome any advice you might have to offer! Salute!

Thanks for your comment, I really dont think you can go wrong with a Lee Classic Turret press as a first option. Maybe even look into the Value turret press. (budget friendly) It uses the same turrets. It will certainly do all your hand gun and small rifle cartridges. The Creedmor may be near the upper range when it comes to sizing but I bet it would be fine. I do not care for the kitted options from Lee. Mostly because the beam scale powder measure is hard to trust IMO. It works if your really careful but the vernier scale it uses is tricky particularly if you dont have a background using that type of measurement. Reloading, if you like it, is a journey. You will not end up where you started. All of our reloading companies are great and make great products. Lee is the most affordable. My optimum would always be a single stage press and a Lee turret press. The turret press really gives you some volume and speed that you wont get from a single stage. I think most people would quit if they loaded 50rds on a single stage LOL. Ive picked up nice components by keeping an eye on CraigsList and ebay for used items. The occasional garage sale. I have a 4 part video series on my Rumble channel that might be useful. Its long but it really explores the basics. Hit me up if theres any thing you need help with. Good luck!

Very well shown to us as always Tree top! I think the "Die Tipping" is more of a thing with almost any progressive press. Its important to have all your dies adjusted about to the same height or tightness" against the shellplate. Just so that the shell plate does not "tip" on most progressives. I agree the vertical turret movement (tolerance) is never an issue with Lees older turret or this newer turret. I bet its just sales hype they wanted to say they got rid of more vertical play. (not that it even matters.) It looks like a great new Turret. I wanted something faster to get more rounds per stroke with pistol so I am very happy with my new 6 Pk Pro as well. I have the Lee 4 tube bullet feeder and the double Alpha powder alarm that beeps for overcharge or undercharge and I can still do seperate seat and crimp. It has a ball detent but also has the locater rod thru the shellplate as your turret does. I love this new progressive press for pistol and even 300 AAC BLK. Lees new 6pk pro is such low muscle effort and smooth I am amazed. For all other longer rifle cases I will still use my Lee Classic Cast 4 hole turret or the 550 manual index Dillon unless I find a buyer and I can get the new Ultimate turret. It looks like a awesome Ultimate Turret ! Happy loading !

Lee has always struggled against perception. They know you don't need 20 tons of force to resize brass which is the only press operation that even requires force, but... the industry markets powerful presses to the masses very well. They also know that vertical movement in the die carrier doesn't cause irregularities but the industry has sold... tight is right. Ironically, the same people who would howl over "slop" in a Lee turret press would swoon over sliding a die in the slot of a Co-Ax press LOL. I think, with the last two offerings Lee just said, fine, you want powerful and tight...here ya go! I get it though, we are trying to capture lightning in a bottle with accuracy so its normal to try to reduce variables, human nature. If you have an Area 419 press and your shooting 4" groups, you would never assume it was the press. Same situation with a $100 Lee press, yep its got to be that cheep press. Lots of love in the comments for the 6 Pack pro. Thats good to hear.

So you'll see two little boxes underneith the turret. Take off the bearing plate and their labled "5" and "4-6". I drilled two 1/4" holes in the bearing plate where those two boxes are and I installed a 15mm spring and a 1/4" ball bearing, drilled small dimples in the turret where the ball would engage the turret. In the newly published instructions for this press Lee states that the "4-6" hole is for a 5 hole turret and the "5" hole is for the 4 & 6 hole turrets. This will allow you to fully index the press and prevents over-rotation of the turret.

Thank you for the great comment. Im aware of the abandon cups molded into the tool hanger. Interesting that they didnt even lable the molding correctly...good lord! Apparently Lee is now shipping the press with a drilled bearing plate, ball and spring. The items are on the site...(you have to dig) in the parts section. looks like about 20 bucks. You really took matters in your own hand (big respect) Ive been testing some friction and fine tuning the index rod twist with good results. Im to the point where Im not sure I need the ball. Anyway, well done my friend... fortune favors the bold!

Nice overview of the press. 👍 Vintage early versions of the Three Hole Turret Press with Auto Index featured adjustable “friction”. The three hole configuration with 120 degrees of rotation per stroke develops quite a bit of inertia due to the larger amount of rotation in the cycle - it’s a mass times acceleration and mass times velocity squared type of thing. That’s why slowing the handle rate helps so effectively - the acceleration and velocity of the moving mass is reduced. The large diameter of the new turret increases the effect over the old three hole press - it’s a pretty good flywheel! I imagine you’ve already revisited your thoughts about needing different detent locations for the various number of stations. The detent on the press would be consistent, and notches on the turrets would be relative to the station holes in the same way the location pin holes are. The challenge would be only using 3 of the notches on the 6 hole turret.
@TreeTopFlier
@TreeTopFlier 3 ай бұрын
Hey William, yes we are definitely running into a "flywheel" type situation and the effect is minimized or exaggerated by the particular setup being used. As we deconstruct the design, I am currently leaning away from an index ball system in favor of some sort of adjustable friction to mitigate overrun. An index ball system AND alignment pin might not always agree when it comes to alignment. Thanks for your comment and thoughts on this. I would be interested in seeing the 3 hole friction adjustment you referenced if you could find a link. Thanks Sir.

Hey Tony, good to hear from you again! I happened to spot an ad for this new turret press and did a search here on KZfaq. Yours is the 1st one I've watched. I agree with some of the other commenters here, about the only advantage is to get that 5th hole for the bullet feeder. Not sure that's enough to redo my whole setup. As I've gotten older I actually prefer going slower and taking my time. I tried that new 6 pack Pro and it gave me anxiety attacks! Sent it back for a refund and carried on with my trusty old Classic turret. Not to mention your powder measure stand wouldn't work with the new setup. I think you'll need a new design 😉Looking forward to more of your content as always. Hope you and the family are doing well.

Hey Greg good to hear from you. Funny you mentioned anxiety from the 6 pack pro... that is exactly my reaction too. Not very relaxing in my opinion. This new turret press grows on you. The ability to set up different turrets is a very nice option. It isnt perfect and adding so many options makes for more possible challenges but depending on your mind set, they can be worked through. I havent built a powder stand for this press yet. Partly because Im having really good luck with my rebuilt auto drum measure and partly because the use of the bullet feeder makes it difficult to hover a powder measure over the turret without interference. I stopped making the stands. With Bidens new rules on PayPal tax transactions and not having a proper facility to work in I dropped it. I gave all the specs to Dan at Inline Fabrication, with the hopes he will pick up the manufacturing. Fingers crossed. We're all doing good here, hope you and yours are as well. Take care Sir.

<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="857">14:17</a> Adding an indexing detent would actually be very simple to do on that press configuration. In fact, it would be simply enough that it could be done with hand tools (though a drill press would make quick work of it). Its simply a case of drilling and tapping a radial thru-hole in the steel top plate in a decently chosen position (position is all that critical) and then a series of shallow dimples drilled radially into each turret tool plate you plan on using. LEE more than likely dropped the feature, not because it cant be done but rather as a cost saving measure to reduce both machine cycle time and extra materials cost associated with the detent. In fact, the engineers likely had it designed in and the bean counters said, "get ride of it".
@TreeTopFlier
@TreeTopFlier 4 ай бұрын
I'm sure a detent is possible...I can think of several options myself. I suspect, however, they were focused on improved alignment via the bayonet pin vs a ball in a notch. The LCT could be aligned by running a case into the sizing die while the bolts on the turret housing were loose, then tightening the bolts, which also means it could be misaligned. This version they tried to put to rest some of their chief criticisms, valid or not...My impression. So far, Ive had two reports ,one from a former LCT user, not happy and one from someone who hadn't used the LCT...No big deal. I think ultimately to make everyone happy there will have to be some sort of friction added to the turret so it doesnt advance past its index point. A simple Teflon screw to put a tiny amount of drag on the turret. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have no desire or need for a progressive press. The only press I've had or used since 2014ish is the classic 4 hole turret press. It has been excellent. I only reload various pistol ammo. I have the old round safety prime and auto disk and they are excellent. I just bought the deluxe auto drum powder measure because of your videos and over the weekend I've been testing it out. Excellent, now I can dial in the charge instead of getting close with the disk. I think it holds better tolerance than the disk which was really good. This new press I will definitely check out. I really like what you've shown so far. I'm not worried about the overshoot. Having the option with more holes is what I'm interested in. Not putting out more rounds an hour. Your videos are awesome and have helped me a lot. Especially the new deluxe auto drum powder measure that you covered extremely well has been a blessing. You can go as long and detailed as you want. I also have the LCT press with round safety prime and auto disk powder feed. I think the round version safety prime is by far the best Lee design. I've customized and adjusted the auto disk so that it will drop even the finest flake powders accurately, so I'm not inclined to learn how to use the drum.
@vinsonhelton7141
@vinsonhelton7141 4 ай бұрын
@user-sp9wr5rf4c The auto disk works great. I wanted something that I could adjust easily that covers what the holes in the disk couldn't. I tried the adjustable disk bar but was not satisfied with it. I have the double disk kit and it works great also. I'm still trying out the auto drum and so far it's been what I've been looking for as far as tuning in the amount very easily and conveniently. Another bonus is adjusting it without turning off the hopper and changing disk size especially when your going from 38 spl to 357 magnum. The auto drum has it's quirks like the auto disk but the drum does seem to throw a slightly more accurate drop. But of course the powder type plays into this as well. I wasn't looking for more accuracy because the auto disk worked great.
@user-sp9wr5rf4c

@@vinsonhelton7141 I hear you about that dumb adjustable charge bar. I increased the adjustability of the fixed auto disk charge hole design by installing a small set screw into the sides of the charge holes on several disks. I turn the screw inward so that it protrudes into the charge hole to reduce volume. I can now throw custom charges of different powder types. But I suspect that Lee will just drop the Auto Disk now that the improved Drum measure is out.

Thanks for the great review. I was looking to move up from the classic turret for bulk range ammo and greater speed. I opted to go with the 6 pack, and made the purchase before this was released (I'm very happy with it). This looks like a great press, but I don't see much of an advantage over the 4 hole turret. The slower operation of the turret allows you to keep a close eye on powder, and placing a bullet isn't a big deal. It seems this just creates more pulls of the lever. I think this may be a great option for someone just looking to step up from a single stage, as the 4 hole was in the past, while allowing more opportunity for growth.

Lots of great comments in the chat about that 6 Pack. I've used it a little, seems nice but we struggled to get reliability from the primer system. Need to get back to it. The one thing I will say about the Ultimate turret is the 5th hole with Lees inline bullet feeder and using the press as intended with the case kicker and catch tray more than makes up for the extra handle pull. Its so efficient it makes up for it and the bullet feeder (so far) sets the bullet straight in the case, better than I can do by hand...very nice.

I believe that would be a nice press for someone that is beginning to break away from a single set up. Cost and Value seems to be Lee's approach of a Business and in recent years they have came out with many new innovations. Some work, some don't without fiddling and tuning. Hi Dave! Lee has been on an innovation rampage for the last 5 or so years. One new product after another. And I have to respect the effort to keep American made products affordable. I do think they should field a few for testing and refinement before putting them out in public. Overall this new press is pretty awesome and feature filled. I feel like the turret over run issue will need to be addressed to reach full market acceptance. I am a sample size of one so not sure if this has been an issue for others. Hope you're doing well sir!

Thanks very much for reviewing this for us TT. I saw the Ultimate advertised and wondered if I should upgrade, you answered my questions -except - why is there no built-in LED ring lighting to see the case? I'm like @JP1AO - I have already invested in about 30 calibers with complete die and turret heads already set up ready to go, so I'm not keen on replacing all of those. My Classic turret press has been disassembled, lubricated (per TreeTopFlier guidance) and so perfectly adjusted that it almost operates itself! I don't like the lack of an indexing ball on the turret head. I'd probably have to also learn a new powder drop instead of using my Auto Discs. As far as I can see the only real advantage of the Ultimate to me would be the added speed of the bullet feed. I don't load magnum-length rifle rounds and don't really need more than four dies in the turret. Glen

I recently upgraded from single stage to the Lee 4000 progressive, found that when I change calibers/setup I need to manually feed 1 case per rotation and check function at each die to see if any need adjustment (flare amount, seating/crimp depth) and once getting a complete cartridge perfected several times then I can use autocase feed function for speed. However the bullet seating is on back of press , difficult to double check for powder, have to sit at an angle to be closer and use mirror and lights (especially for those deep 38 cases). I can see the need for 6 die head if want to use a bullet feeder(glad you got yours to work) and a powder checker.

Treetop great review, I just bought a Lee value turret press for my Christmas present. I know what Lee is speaking of about die tipping, I've seen it when I was to aggressive with the press. The press pushes the tool head up on one side cocking the tool head.

Yeah, I'm sure that's what they are referring to, however, I searched and couldn't find anyone talking about it as a problem other than Lee? And I have never been able to translate that into an actual problem. It would be easy to isolate. Mark cases on one side, resize them and seat bullets in them with the mark in the same location. Then check cases and completed rounds for runnout. If the tool head is inducing a problem you would see it indexed in the same direction each time. I dont think thats the case. Perception vs reality. But I agree there is a little rise on one side.

I've seen another video review of this press which shows that some non-LEE shell holders are not held in position very well (no spring clip to capture them) and even the LEE shell holders seem like they could slip out of position very easily. I'd appreciate your opinion of the new shell holder system. Thanks again for a great review of this press.

Thanks for the comment. I measured shell holders from 4 manufacturers. They were within .012" of each other...not enough to make any difference. While I'm not a fan of the plastic clip that holds the shell holder it has worked OK for me. The shell holder is designed to float for self alignment. I plan another more independent video as soon as I get the rest of the turrets.

@TreeTopFlier

There is no roller bearing in it. The turret rides on a lubricated disk I would call a thrust washer (More in my next video) and its held in place with the turret housing with much tighter tolerances than we have seen in the past. I've messed with manually advancing the turret and its do-able but it requires you to make alignment visually rather than by feel. It is different and a little weird but I adjusted to it pretty fast. Some will never like it I'm sure.

There is a bunch of things you could do. But yes something that puts a little drag on the turret would be easy. The instructions call for STP lube or grease on the turret. As I recall STP is very sticky and would probably be viscus enough to at least dampen the effect. It really wasnt a big deal in operation, you slow down to prime, you slow down to keep the bullet on the case while bringing the seating die in position. Just a minor change in speed as you reach the down stroke. It is weird coming from the other versions of this press, so its my job to point it out. Thanks for watching.

@@TreeTopFlier just got my parts from lee. So the holes in the bearing plate were 1/4" and same location I had them. The spring is a higher spring rate than what I have. If your 5 or 6 hole turret doesn't have dimples in it, you'll probably have to put some in there. Mine didn't, but I suspect if you order new ones they will. The holes I drilled combined with the increased spring rate locs that turret tight, maybe too well.

I think so, with so many bullet lengths its hard to say yes for sure. if you use a bullet feeder maybe not. The problem is with the feeder. when the feeder sets the bullet on top of the cartridge as you lower the ram the turret rotates. If the turret rotates before the bullet is clear of the die the die can nock over the bullet. I would say if you hand feed into the seating die, no problem, auto indexing should be possible. I just made a batch of 7.62x54R with a bullet feeder and it was fine, still had about 3/8" clearance. hope this helps.

This press does not make a lot of sense to me. On an auto-indexing turret press there is a premium, in the form of full (big 50 BMG in this case) handle movement, to pay for each additional station. Plus the larger turret circumference makes the auto-indexing system work harder and wear quicker. So the 5- and 6- stations are too much. I would rather insert the bullet manually, than load the bullet feeder and then add a handle pull to each round. After all, the case is in the most convenient place (for manual operations and visual checking) in front of the reloader at all times. On a turret press, a 2-station option is worth more than 5- and 6- combined. In rifle calibers, sizing is usually followed by trimming, deburring and wet tumbling to remove the case lube. So what is left for the auto-indexing turret press is just powder drop and bullet seating if we skip the Factory Crimp. The only situation I can imagine, where 5 stations would be worth it, is factory crimped .357 Sig / .400 CorBon with 2-stage sizing - first the body with a carbide .40 S&W / .45 ACP die, then the neck and shoulder with the caliber specific steel die. Some say it is possible to avoid lubing the cases this way. Plus there is the issue of hard to change turrets. The option to quickly switch between 3 and 4 holes would be nice. 3 for revolvers with seating and crimping combined, 4 for pistols with the FC die. I would rather prefer the old style presses, 4 hole max, with their easy to change turrets, just with optional 3-hole turrets and re-worked auto-indexing system to provide the 2-3-4 flexibility.
@TreeTopFlier
@TreeTopFlier 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment. There will be a lot of people who will not see the value of this press, meaning the 4 hole LCT will not be going anywhere soon. The indexing system seems to be strong enough to handle the weight on the turret. I don't see wear as a problem. If there is wear overtime, I think we will see it in the clutch assembly which will be easy to maintain with a simple parts swap. Lee sells the ENTIRE plastic parts kit for $10 so freshening it up would be easy and inexpensive. I'm sure they will refine that to just the clutch and clutch housing in the near future. As for the extra pulls for a completed round... My experience, so far, is the efficiency of the bullet feeder and the completed round kicker makes the extra handle pulls less noticeable. The press is very productive in my limited time using it.
@misiomor
@misiomor 3 ай бұрын
@@TreeTopFlier Manual bullet insertion is not very time consuming on a turret press, at least the fetching of the bullet can be done while flaring and powder dispensing. And it needs to be done anyway while filling up the bullet feeder. I cannot imagine an automatic (motorized) bullet feeder working with a turret press. I withdraw my criticism of the new turret change system - the old way of lifting the turret half way between the clicks is impossible with a variable number of stations. What I am liking less and less, is the new turret positioning system. The ball detent would still be nice, it might be made softer (not to make the indexing work to hard) and less precise, to provide some coarse positioning for the alignment pin to find its mark and do the final touch. The only sacrifice would be the dual use of the 6-hole plate. A separate 3-hole would need to be made. Yet these plates are intended to be bought separately, so the probability of using both 3- and 6- options by the same reloader is rather low. On the plus side - the 6-hole plate could be used in the manual indexing mode, providing some competition to machines like the Lyman All-American 8. With the current system, manual indexing simply does not make sense. Too bad for those in favor of working with just 2 dies. The complete round kicker - it comes with some awkward shellholder retention system (to provide free rotation), not working very well with other brands' shellholders with their different outside diameter. Tell that to reloaders doing .44 Mag or 9x19 - Lee shellholders are notoriously bad in these calibers because of the unification with the next bigger caliber - .45 Colt or .40 S&W. I had some brands (S&B for example) of brass pull away from a Lee shellholder on priming or sizing downstroke, with some rim damage.
