I moved to Hollywood in '84, Rit was already a guitar hero to me. For years to come I had the pleasure of seeing all of these players in different local venues, their own gigs or supporting others. It was a time I'll never forget.

I've been listening to Lee Ritenour longer than I thought: he did the appagiation on Strawberry Letter #23 with the Brothers Johnson, but it was decades before I knew that. in the same way, I heard Phil Perry sing Say You Will with Rena Scott and Dr. Osamu Kitajima when I was in high school, but it wasn't until I came out of Navy boot camp decades later that I knew who Phil Perry was! The Heart Of The Man cassette was the first active duty purchase I made at the AAFES in which I grew up.

I know, many people will mention Miles' bands or some other bands like Weather Report, etc., but this line up is just amazing! One of the most interesting drummers from 70s and 80s, one of the best bass players, the endless voice of Phil, the great tone of Ernie, the solid presence of Barnaby Finch and of course, the juicy guitar of Captain Rit!

As a teenger and young adult, I grew up on this music. It made appreciate melody and complexity. Hearing it againg takes me back in time. I know all these musical pieces, I heard them constantly (also people like Grusin, Benson, Carlton, Narell, Felder, P. Jackson Jr., Spyrogira, Yellowjackets, Rippingtones, Sanborn, Klugh, etc.). Something unique. How fortunate I was.

It's a sign of the times kind of concert.....the music was predominantly what passed for rock music and instrumental excursions back then. Lee has gotten so much better and broadened his playing to encompass jazz, fusion, and more contemporary arrangements. Rock can be so boring, and it was in this performance despite exemplary and tasteful soloing by several instrument players, including Lee. But this format of music strangles the percussionist, bass guy, and even the keyboards to a degree. Mostly formulaic stuff by all, but in later decades, the tempos were varied and uptempo time signatures began to prevail. With as talented a drummer as Carlos was back then, he was able to put his full repertoire or skill set on display during the Record Plant performance when they did more creative material and had players like Dave Grusin and Larry Williams in the mix. Carlos Vega was a talented guy, but this kind of rock material does little to show his talent. Such a shame. But quality concert nonetheless.
