Who would ever have thought 'funk' could be like this, ( that is, if I know what funk really is)? For me, funk is raw. Funk is the other side of something unsaid but truly magnetic. I'm still stuck, Mr. Ritenour.

You got almost all of the players involved in making of this memorable tune on the original release correctly, except for the drummer. It was the incomparable Omar Hakim, and not the late, great Carlos Vega.

The man on bass was Abraham Laboriel, father of Paul McCartney/Wings current percussion/drummer.....he/Abe was the awesome bassist Lee used during his Record Plant sessions in LA in the 80's on which an incredible DVD was released.....Dave Grusin was also on it.

I like all the drummers that ever played this tune but Gary's groove is just fat and solid....much more so than all the other versions I've seen. JR John Robinson school of laying it down. Nice.

No disrespect intended. I simply consider Carlos as one of the elite players. His style was that of a musical quality...not just tasteful fills and grooves, but drum fills that became part of the song as much as a melody line. I'm not familiar with this drummer but he is rock solid with a real nice natural sound. Certainly worthy of praise.

Great upload, thank you for letting us know this performance. Just as a suggestion, and I could be wrong, I believe that the last name of the bass player is "Laboriel", Abraham "Abe" Laboriel, well known bassist generally associated with smooth jazz musicians like Al Jarreau.

Gary Novak's drum progression and groove is similar to that used by Hillary Jones in the European Pori Festival around the same time, but Hillary puts a bit more physicality and the mixing seems to give the drumming in Pori more bandwidth and volume. Great musicianship.....I never heard how Carlos Vega interpreted the beat and fills.....assume there is a live performance with him as drummer somewhere out there.

@ianidinuse ;Hi, my friend ! For sure, the best versions of this song are played with nylon strings Guitars ; we can't say that it is "classical guitars", cause "it's a solid-body nylon that has a hybrid sound combining acoustic & electric "colors"" (said Lee Ritenour) but I've always heard it played on a solid-body electric-acoustic guitar;sometimes, it was a Gibson Chet Atkins nylon, sometimes a Sadowski, and even once (I'm proud of that, cause I got the same guitar), a Godin Multiac Duet....
@lorenzino1
@lorenzino1 14 жыл бұрын
@wackyshredder :Hi ! You're right, this guitar is an electric-acoustic nylon strings SADOWSKY, a Crafter that's in manhattan. Many Brasilians' musicians are playing with the same guitar (I even suppose that Lee Ritenour had showed it to Djavan, or Djavan had showed it to Lee, cause it's after having played "Asa" together that both are using a Sadowsky ). I hope beeing able to buy one soon or late. I know that I can still buy one cause I've looked the Sadowsky's guitars on my computer. BYE !

@ianidinuse :Those guitars are made to be amplified, principally,you can play just for working or for fun, you'll hear it enough, but it's not like the real electric-acoustics, so the mics that are used have many importance. I know that the Gibson Chet Atkins got 1 piezo, but a hexaphonique 1, & there's no equalizer,there's a volume for each string. In the Sadowski, don't know,but in the Godin,2 ways,a piezo & a condensator mic,& you can mix the 2 to have a clear but warm sound.Later ! BYE, man!

@ianidinuse :Hi, my friend ! Like it's written somewhere, that guitar is a Sadowsky, electric-acoustic Guitar crafted in Manhattan. Many great guitarists got one (Gilberto Gil, Djavan, and others, not only Brasilian's players, but I forgot their names). I'd love to have the same one, but it coasts something like 2500 euros. It it still in production, but I think that you must command one to have that great guitar. Not sure ! I'm sure of the rest of what I've written.Later. BYE !
