1966 I was 17. Growing up in the Village of Harlem exciting and eclatic. SideWinder was blaring on the radio. Not just the jazz stations but on the R&B stations too. 1966 summer was electrifying in so many ways. Black power was a new theme being heard in America. In fact it scared the be jesus out of white America. Any way Sidewinder was like an anthem of sorts.

It's still amazing to me that this is Barry Harris on piano, it's so funky it almost sounds like Horace silver. Just goes to show how great BH is!

My buddy Keith, also a trumpet man, gave this to me as a birthday gift in 1967. Still have the LP. Have played this at least hundreds of times over the decades.

This "crossover" tune was called "The Song That Saved Blue Note", because it generated a lot of cash to a label that cared about music first and money second. All kinds of folks dug this tune - you could swing to it, dance to it, make love to it, just about anything to it. The cars at Blue Note helped get real music to the masses and they should be revered. You need good businessman in the music business, because musicians are notoriously bad when it comes to business, and most of the "businessman" were crooks who just stole from the artists.

My introduction to the sound of Joe Henderson when I was 14 years old. Still is one of my favorite tenor players

I completely agree. These musicians were and perhaps still are if you’re around so inspiring and give pride and joy to our souls no matter where we come from if we just listen. Stay safe and healthy my friend with you and your family. Keep sharing the music.

I used to play this song live in clubs and in concert twice. First, as a drummer on WBUR, in 1978, in a trio with trumpet, bass and drums. Then in 1997 with a trio with vibraphone, violin and bass. That was great. I booked 52 dates in 52 weeks. No one listened. It was Jazz Brunch.
