I hope to elevate my motorcycle camping experience with this mini camper called Lees-Ure Lite Excel Tent Trailer. I believe this is the best camper for motorcycle touring in today's market.

Great video. I agree with a lot of your observations. I've dropped about 15% in average mileage with the Mini Mate. After my "runaway" incident, I've been on a bit of safety chain crusade. It looked as if your chains were hooked on the safe spot on the bike and with no chance to cradle the tongue if you had a bitch/ball failure. They also looked a little long. With the chains on, pop the connector off the ball and see if it can touch the ground and even more important, will the tongue reach your back tire if uncoupled and you are trying to brake. If either, they are too long. Keep them coming... I hope to be on the road in 3 weeks.

Hi Jim, you bring up some controversial points. The chain is a towing requirement in Canada (I guess pretty much everywhere) but …… there are two lines of thoughts when comes down to motorcycles. ( I am currently 50-50 on each one and I am aware that some of our rider friends are following #2 ) 1- Have the chain attached so a fixed (and strong) location and ensure the chain is crossed to create a cradle (as you eluded). This is the official or correct way to haul any kind of trailer mainly with cars or pick up trucks. Note: This is how I used to tow my boat trailer. 2- Have the chain attached to a weak location (just to comply with motor vehicle rules) to ensure the trailer would actually separate in case of the ball failure (extremely rare) or if the hitch isn’t properly attached to the ball. (as you know this is possible) The argument about #2 is based on the fact we wouldn’t like to see the hitch hitting the ground at high speeds or at best resting temporarily onto the cradle and then touching tire if the rider slows down or brake. Both could take the rider and motorcycle down. Based on your longer experience (and the pickle you went through) would you still go for option #1 ?

@@WindyTherapy I ama strong advocate of option #1. I think there is only one option. I chose to tow the trailer so I should take full responsibility to keep it attached to my bike. Mechanical failure is rare. The only moving parts are the grabber under the ball and that should be inspected and tightened (or loosened as required) Signs of metal fatigue will usually show up at the ball or the hitch and they should be looked for before and after long trips. During if you have been hitting a lot of rough terrain. In my case, it was operator error. I actually closed the hitch and pinned it ABOVE the ball. I know do a pull up test after pinning to make sure it is properly in place. People do forget to pin the hitch and they can be subject to bouncing open. Here's the Catch 22, if you are 100% sure that your equipment is in good shape and that your hook up routine insures that you are always on the ball and locked, then you will never have an accidental uncoupling... so, you will never have your trailer dragging behind you or going into your rear tire. You are 100% safe from that, so why not have proper safety chains attached. You are NEVER going to need them. So why not comply with the law here. Note, if the chains are the right length they will keep the tongue off the ground and not allow it to hit your tire. I'll have to do a video on that as I start camping for the summer.

@@OldGuyonaBike I go with Number 2, been towing with my bikes for years. My chains are attached with a tie wrap, there is NO 100% when towing. Anything can happen while on the road, while I am responsible for my trailer, I sure don't want it to take me out. But do what makes YOU feel safe.

@@WindyTherapy My general formula for shooting a video is for a viewer to have some sort of takeaway, a lesson learned if you will. Sans the clowning videos like Halloween one I posted, mail call, etc. I have the next 27 videos scheduled for topic to cover and much is just me in my garage. Boring to say the least... There's so much to cover that help motorcyclists. What draws me to your content is you are legitimately try to help. Mo drama, no clickbait, just facts! Take my thoughts with a grain of salt as I am but a pimple on the buns of YT and almost no impact on the community. Eric

So far I love it as I was a bit tired of sleeping on the ground and with my solar generator and foldable solar panel, it allows me to bush camp (boondock) with somewhat the conveniences of a campground (except the washroom of course) Your new or even the old bike wouldn’t have any issues towing a trailer. Hi Mariana ! Nice to connect with TTSE owners ! Yep the hitch was a bugger and I had to design it and get it fabricated so …. Needless to say it wasn’t cheap but I don’t regret it. The only point that you need to be mindful about is the fact the bike has plenty CC’s and HP but the torque is much lower than I expected so be careful on the trailer overall weight. In my case towing 450 Lbs (loaded) I can’t bring my wife nor face steep hills. We have the same Bike 👍👍👍 I’m in Alberta but ride thru BC once a year usually depending on work schedule. Must be hard on back tires towing, I barely get 10,000km on mine but mostly from flat spots. I’m originally from the UK so had to have a Triumph bike. Hoping they come out with another 2 up touring bike in the future. My wife struggles climbing up on the trophy now 🙄🙄 ride safe hopefully see you out on the road sometime. Not often I see many Trophies around Alberta.

Welcome aboard Colin ! Historically the rear tire would wear out faster but since I started pulling the trailer the front one is the one taking the beating due to breaking with 350/400 lbs pushing the bike forward. I just replaced the front tire last week and the rear can make it until the next season. (flat spots for me too so I guess we aren’t getting our knees closer to the ground very often lol ) Now I am breaking differently using the rear brake and gearing down to make things easier for the front one. I am still new into trailer towing but learning a lot. (The hardest part was the fact there are no standard hitches for the Trophy so I had to get it fabricated so it costed my 1K to get it done) What kind of tires are you using ?

@@WindyTherapy I had the Pirelli Angel GT II 's for the 1st 32,000km but couldn't find any replacements due to supply issues so now I am trying Dunlop Roadsmart III for this time. They seem a little different than the Pirelli tires. I get your point about connecting a hitch to the bike there isn't much back there to attach anything to. I tour with the wife we usually go to the USA but due to COVID... still waiting for the border to open fingers crossed for September i love riding thru MOntana/Idaho/Washington and Oregon. I've ridden all over BC too but the 2 lane roads are way nicer down south i find. Hopefully see you out and about one day, not a lot of Trophy owners here in western Canada!!!!

My first set was The Pirelli Angel as well (OEM) but it got flat spots faster than any other tire i tried previously. My second set was a Michelin Road Pilot 5 and was very good. This time I am trying a Bridgestone Battlax hypersport (front only so far) and I am really enjoying its grip. I love the WA and OR coast as well so probably if everything improves it will be the plan for the next spring. As far as the TTSE, there are about 4 or 5 in the Okanagan but mine is the only black. (To the best of my knowledge) Please send me a message if you pass by. Cheers

Thanks a lot my friend ! Yes the hitch was an ordeal but after 4 modifications is finally 150%. Lots of folks are towing this pop-up camper (or similar) or cargo trailers with spiders. Remove the hitch on your trailer and install a swivel hitch then it doesn’t have to rotate when placed on the ball.

You might want to look at a Heim Coupler swivel hitch. This hitch allows more leaning of you bike and if your trailer tools over it will not pull your bike over. Great videos, keep up the good work. Kevin

I’m excited to pick up my new LuL in ten days & start a road trip with it on the classic US-50. You’ve been an inspiration with your videos. The major camping we choose are likely natural ones in national forests, NPs, SPs & similar. But sometimes one might go to an RV park. Q: what is your experience with the LuL on RV parks, since at least in the US I have been rejected coming with a classical tent.

As far as camping in RV parks ..... Yes it can be an issue pop up campers are between tents and RV's and sometimes we are caught between the rock and the hard place. Here in Canada RV parks are very restrictive so I look for regional, municipal or private campgrounds. I don't mind few days "in the bushes" but I have to confess I love my hot showers and a clean washroom.

Thanks Pete !! Most definitely… it does add some risks but I often tell people that towing with a motorcycle is like unprotected sex. We all know that’s wrong, not recommended and shouldn’t be done but we all love the benefits, comfort and convenience it provides !

Maybe one day Charlie. Some countries deem towing a motorcycle trailer dangerous (which can be if not respectfully handled) but more people get hurt and die riding scooters, bicycles and cars. Thanks for watching !

I'm curious if most motorcycle hitches are connected to the upper part of the frame like yours or to the swing arm next to the wheel? As I consider adding a trailer to my setup I never considered the hitch configuration because I've haven't actually seen one in person before. Thanks for the excellent explanation 🤘

Most aren’t connected to the top however mine isn’t really a benchmark as I had to design it and get it fabricated (custom made) because there wasn’t anything available. Depending what kind of trailer you’re looking for (I think would be a small cargo trailer) there are some that are simply connected through the wheel. (They use the hollow hub to put through a rod and connect to the trailer) I can DM you some references through IG

Hi Dom, yes I don’t have a swivel hitch but instead I have a 1 7/8” ball with a thinner shank (neck) which allows more leaning angle than standard ones. A swivel hitch is great but not a must. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers

You gave me an idea to research Instead of having an SUV pulling a trailer can have my mustang pull a small mini camper. Can I get the same experience? I have been researching the real tow capacity of the mustang and what small rv trailer or mini camper it could pull If I find a solution I can I would need the Suv or larger trailer will keep you posted

For sure ! The Lees-Ure Lite pop up camper trailer is a mini camper that can be easily pulled with your mustang. It is a lightweight trailer (total weight about 400 lbs and 40 lbs for the tongue weight) so it can definitely work out for you. Thanks for commenting! Cheers

Good question Chris ! Long story short ….. no they don’t. I am used to tow a boat so my first safety concern was the fact motorcycles trailers don’t (normally) have brakes. Having said that, after researching the reasons it make sense. 1) Motorcycle trailers are light and typically add the weight of a passenger so the bike brakes can handle it. 2) Electric brakes tend to be a bit jerky and wouldn’t be safe to have the trailer pulling the bike when you apply the brakes as it may compromise the stabilization at higher speeds. Thanks Mike ! The motorcycle (dry weight) is 294 kgs / 650 lbs. A towing rule of thumb the trailer or camper weight should be 50% (or less) of the pulling vehicle. Considering the 650lbs + 36 lbs of fuel + my own 200 lbs = 886 lbs so I am slightly below the threshold. What kind of motorcycle do you have ? Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Vilayat ! Yes, I went through lots of heavy rain and no water went in the camper. The unit has a standard and removable rainfly. (the silver material you can see on the top). Welcome a board ! Are you planning to get a op up camper ? Eddie

I have a 2021 Honda xr650l dual sport that has very nice torque. I’m wondering if I can do a hitch set up for that bike and pull this camper. I haven’t seen it done on a dual sport.

@@WindyTherapy 43 horse power 52 foot pounds of torque and couldn’t find any GVW listed for the bike the weight is 359 pounds dry. It has very good disc brakes front and rear

@@breakdownbill1 Unfortunately I wouldn’t recommend pulling a pop up camper with your current bike as mine struggles uphill with 95 ft lbs of torque and 137 HP. (Torque is more important than HP ) Also the trailer loaded (I work hard to keep it as light as possible) but I am still at 480 lbs so heavier than your bike. The biggest issues (taking torque and HP out of the picture) is the fact your bike is dangerously light so at high or Hwy speeds the trailer would pull you out of the road due to the centrifugal forces. (The tail wagging the dog effect) Ideally the bike weight should be 70-100% more than the trailer. My bike dry weight is 680 (low side of my rule) but adding a full tank and my 190lbs helps. Maybe consider a small cargo trailer such as KipMoto to give you more storage space for an awesome tenting experience

@@cutuupak That’s why I bought this pop up camper. I love motorcycle trips and camping but after several years of tenting with my 2 person tent I had enough. (Plus I can tow the trailer with our family SUV so is like a 2 in 1 toy) Your bike can tow it without issues. Note: Check my last video which shows how I set up my whole campground in 23 minutes

Hi Alva ! Thank you so much for your kind message. I just got back from a longer trip and I can tell you it hauls well and on Hwy speeds I can’t even notice it. Going up hill, braking or facing high winds are the factors that reminds me I have something behind me. I wish my bike had more torque (such as a Goldwing) but as long I don’t hit mountain passes I am fine. Keep in mind that I also tow the pop up with our SUV (Nissan Murano) and then is truly effortless. My most recent video shows how to setup my entire campground (in few minutes) so you may find it interesting or helpful. Feel free to ask any other question you may have.
