I set out to discover the secrets of Leftfield's production on this all time classic track - Song of Life.
I recreated all the sounds I could and uncovered the samples, the synths and the secrets of what went into it.
Here's a link to more info on the gear used - gearspace.com/board/electroni...

Thanks for a great insight into the track lifted from one of the best dance albums ever made that still sounds decades ahead of the music of today. One thing I've always wanted to know is what was the thinking behind having John Lydon sing the vocals on the brilliant 'Open Up' track? It's a stroke of genius as i'm sure that 99% of dance music producers wouldn't even have considered him as a suitable choice. Only Smarties have the answer right?

Just found your channel while looking for reaction videos for faithless. Astounding there isn't many on KZfaq. Can definitely see the Maxi Jazz influence with you vocal chants on the track, his Buddhist influence made the tracks what they were. Have to admit having some DJ experience I love how pitch and beat come together in a set. Appreciate that ear you have for how tracks are made up. I only wish I had your ability to play around with the electronics. I'd be doing my own music. Away to binge watch your posts. Subscribed and will recommend 🙏

I love Leftism, Jilted also Exit Planet Dust (best Chemicals album imo) and Dubnobasswithmyheadman, they're all in the same top tier and they're all actually different directions in 'dance music', you don't have to decide which is the best. Leftism is the 'housiest' and most playable in clubs. Jilted is on a par though, that was Liam Howlett's own harder 'electronic punk' sound with tracks like Voodoo People and Poison.

Totally. Leftism is the high watermark of UK dance in the nineties. Still love the others listed here, and I’d add Oto by Fluke too. Along with “Pearl’s Girl” and “Leave Home,” “Song of Life” for me brings back so many wonderful memories. What a great time to be alive!

this is a bogus way of recreating anything or any music made more than 15 or 20 years ago. Why? These people (being worshipped) never used any Ableton nor did they have the processing power of so many tracks piled up. Also there's no education value in copying and repeating something from the past. Then we have Patreon beggars picking up the cents n dimes... What a racket this is.

The strings sound the way they do because the song is in C Dorian rather than Natural Minor, so the A flat in C minor scale (C, D, E♭, F, G, A♭, B♭) is raise a semitone to A. This gives it a slightly brighter sound than the sad sounding Natural Minor and gives the F major IV chord instead of F minor which is that beautiful but slightly unexpected 3rd chord in the progression. Absolutely love these breakdowns, there's no way we weren't at the same rave at some point during the 90s because every track you breakdown is straight out of my fondest memories playlist. The 303 pitched bassline completely blew my mind, absolutely nailed it, a very special sound indeed. Thank you!

It's kind of weird how Leftfield was like the definitive example of what progressive house music sounded like considering that most modern progressive house music nowadays sounds nothing like Leftfield. A lot of their classic stuff like Song of Life, Open Up, and Space Shanty could easily fit well in a "techno" or even a "psytrance" mix in certain circumstances today.

Big leftfield fan here, must say there was a point in time where that album never left the cd player, i've also got it on it on all my mobile devices too, love the full album,...AWESOMENESS!! Whenever i purchased/auditioned new monitors/speakers back in the day this was one of my go to track alongside "inspection" (CHECK ONE) to test their drive, authority and scale! "SONG OF LIFE" helped separate the "wheat from the chaff" in my decision making...the bass on this track is truly awesome and it demands to be driven hard to be fully appreciated. just about to go watch your "Orb" little fluffy cloud deconstruction/reconstruction,,oh and i've just subscribed too!...love what you do!! Absolute classic track and a great rundown of its components. The lead sound @ 14:49 I'm almost certain is a JD-990. IIRC they had one. The phaser effect gives it away plus it has such presence even on a relatively straightforward timbre. Also think the strings could be from the JD too. Great work.

Good call. Just dusted off the the Super JD and sounds like “bubbly lead”. My initial thought was the K2600 (until I realised the synth came out 7 years after the song 😂) The sci-if part at the end sounds like it could be from one of those Roland expansion boards in the JD too.
