Couldn’t get through this without crying. He was my boyhood hero. Great ball player and better man. Wasn’t really aware of the racial prejudice against him in the early 60’s. That is sad because he brought so much joy to Pittsburgh and western Pa with the way he played. Pirate announcer Bob Prince every now and again referred to him as Bobby Clemente when he came to the plate. I don’t think that was a slight to Roberto because Prince always spoke of Roberto’s greatness. May never be another like him in a Pirate uniform.

the dodgers originally signed him and tried to stash him on their triple a team but the pirates selected him in the rule 5 draft. dumb move by the dodgers to say the least. rip roberto
