After 40 hours with Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon we can say, without a doubt, that this is a must play game of 2023. The gameplay combines the nostalgia of past tiles with the modern nuances we've come to expect from our games. It's an incredible, fast-paced, ridiculously challenging game that will have you hooked for dozens of hours.

As a veteran that started playing over 20 years ago, you hit the nail on the head when it came to the short 5 min missions compared to the long ones. I’d hate it if they got rid of the short ones all together. As a Bungie employee once said… “it’s all about capturing that 30 seconds of fun, over and over again”

I want to give a shoutout to many Armored Core content creators, because they deserve a lot of love for their efforts after all the years and specially since this franchise will get more popular (this includes you, Iron Pinneapple, Oroboro, Zentreya, Fightincowboy and VaatiVidya): - The Lore Hunter - Silver Glint - AesirAesthetics - Armoredcorelore - Love_Arc - Sinclair Lore - Anatolia's Mercenary - MrHappy1227 (though he is more focused on Final Fantasy) - Rubicon Dogs - Zealous (Znote) - Cleric - FromCheng - Writing on Games - Above Average Gaming

I first played Armored Core just over 20 years ago and I can't remember the last time I played ANY Armored Core. It might have been close to then. But somehow this game feels like the exact progression of everything I expected the game to be. In a good way. Im old... this game is super nostalgic somehow. Did FromSoft just drop a GoTY on us? Is FromSoft the new Death Row records?

I'm not a fromsoft games player. I'm not a mech enthusiast. I'm not even a single player or action game player. But I do love fighting games, and, especially when fighting humanoid acs, it feels like a 3d fighting game. It's amazing. I'm a fan for life now.

Same here, my main concern was about the smaller enemies meaning the main enjoyment of the game comes solely from bosses to the point where the lead up would t be that enjoyable. The other is how I feel like the reliance on switching up parts to beat a boss feels more like you are choosing the parts that were designed to win, less about me actually beating the boss solely due to my own decisionmaking

Slight error in this review. There is the OS system that you can update, and it's kind of like a skill tree. So there IS something beyond just the skills of the player and building unlocked parts otherwise. I feel like that should be touched on. It does get mentioned later, but for those who would tune out to soon would miss this fun fact. It is a replacement of the skill tree bit, but done in a very good way.

This game reminds me of a more hardcore version of ratchet and clank. You find power in unlocking sick ass weapons and there’s no stat upgrading just gaining currency and unlocking weapons and armor and completing missions. R&C is more story driven and caters to the casual then AC caters to the hardcore gamer. Then how successful you are depends on your movement and weapon choices which R&C also depends on but to a lesser degree. As a person who grew up with ratchet and clank and loved them all but have never played armored core until now I can say this game is amazing it is just what I wanted as an adult gamer who enjoys shooting games and a challenge.

The simple addition of the "Contextual Help" button. should make this game of the year on its own. every game should adopt this. This needs to be industry standard shit right here. The whole game is great, BUT THAT BUTTON IS A GAME CHANGER! You look at a generator and wonder, "What does {energy weapon spec} actually do? is it just more dmg?" Turns out, it also heavily affects charge speed! It even clarifies that it doesn't apply to plasma missiles because they don't charge. Now thats good shit right there! 9.8/10 User Interface (and thats just because i dont believe in perfect scores!)

As a long-time vet since AC1 -- this review seems a phone-in and is missing key points of the series. You mention that this is not a Souls game but, all the tell-tell mechanics are indeed a Souls game. It was also noted that this was the release that longtime veterans were looking for -- but this initiative feels like FROM is trying to convert Souls fans into the AC series. A common review trend for this game is the mention that it's not a Souls game despite the fact that most reviewers haven't dived into the previous games. I feel like FROM paid reviewers to stick to a narrative in hopes that vets like myself will and did drop cash on this game expecting something else. For starters, this game controls now features a dodge button, energy packs, and a staggered system. Gone is the radar system for back and head models, fixed camera, and rechargeable generator when not engaged mid-flight. Now, players are given a handful of "classic missions" and a bigger focus on bosses that can and will kill you in 2 to 3 hits forcing players to retry missions countless times. There's a stupid weapon recharge/reload/overheat that slows down your offense, a Souls stagger system and controls that modulate between responsive and outright dead. Devs now force you to fight large and fast bosses that will suffer chip damage with the expected strategy change when down to 40% health. Most of the players clapping this move are Souls players. None of the previous installments have seen the marking hype this game has had and most of that speaks to FROM pumping this series with the same annoying mechanics found in other previous Souls games. You are no longer required to pull yourself up by your bootstraps to win. Instead, you have to remember idiotic patterns, use weapons that don't match your playstyle, and flat-out ignore overall parts stats in favor of using what deals the most damage. Yes, the Souls gameplay is popular but this was a series that didn't need this nonsense injected into it. The majority of new players have no experience with the previous installments that made this series a cult classic.

I'm only just through to chapter 2, but so far I'm finding the snippets of story really compelling. There are characters I hate (Snail), factions I'm rooting for and disappointed when I have to go on a mission against, and intrigue which I won't spoil. In typical From style the story is fragmented and relies on you putting those fragments into a coherent order, but in many ways it's much more explicit than Dark Souls and only marginally less explicit than Sekiro.

Everyone constantly be comparing it with all this “souls-like” bs. Honestly I’m glad it has little to nothing to do with souls. I’ve played every AC game and was a Raven before the whole Souls generation took over. I’m glad AC stands on its own as an outstanding game and the Souls generation can learn to step outside of that mentality and rediscover the AC franchise.

I guess there's an attempt to try and bring it back with the first games remake. Hopefully it sells well enough to show there's interest for more mainline games

I've been waiting to see your review of this (Saw Livid's activity on this on my friend list, haha), but I've been waiting on AC6 even since I was playing AC: Verdict Day. This game's been a LONG time coming, and I'm SO glad that it sounds like it won't disappoint. I wish it had campaign co-op, or even the Mercenary system of AC:VD (you could save your builds to be hireable allies for other players, which would earn you the profit cut your copy makes, or you could go on those missions yourself), but I'm just happy to see AC getting the return to glory that it deserves!

its just a souls game. Slow everything, poor boost mechanics, staggering is a very very very persistent issue, health pots (called repairs in this game) and no UI such as minimap, or easy to read missile direction indication. just a slight beep when something (dont even know if it was far or close) fires at you. after that you don't have any info on what or were the shot is. like I said, its just a Souls game that's been put into mech form. I hope I save you $70 if you want a true core game.

Yea I think graphics are good. On par with what From always does where they just have good artists. but yea its not Horizon Forbidden West. To be fair I dont think theres a chance in hell of getting stable frames if it did. All those games just crank up the shadows and reflections and Bloom to kind of fake you out anyway its not really better.
