In Colorado, recreational marijuana (without a medical prescription) is taxed at 40%. We were the first state to fully legalize with the high taxes going into our public schools. Yesterday, we voted to fully fund free school lunches. Last election, it was all day kindergarten without payment. Lots of weed money to spend

I live in Texas and while my kids were in school between 2001-2013, corporal punishment in our school district was allowed by default but only could be administered by the vice principal or principal of the campus. Parents had the ability to refuse that punishment authority but we had to submit a signed form each year to ensure it was not used.

We definitely got paddlings in school when I was a kid (80s/90s) in Texas. Behavior has a demerit system. We were given green cards for acting up (so a warning.) 2 green demerits equaled a red demerit. And like in soccer, you could also get an immediate red demerit for acting up particularly "bad". Getting a red meant you were sent directly to the principals office, where he'd use an old ping pong paddle to whip your ass. Usually after lunch there'd be a line of kids waiting outside his office, crying, waiting for their ass whipping.

that’s really what corporal punishment is all about, instilling enough fear of the consequences that you don’t do what it is they are trying to keep you from doing, like crossing a paved highway unaccompanied when you’re too young. they are trying to keep you alive, yup! my dad chased me all the way home with that willow switch, glad he loved me enough to beat my ass so i wouldn’t cross the street.

I'd bet most places require parental consent forms to allow using the "board of education" these days because it'd be an instant lawsuit without written consent. My grandpa was a school principal from the 60's-80's, and he talked about breaking multiple paddles (using them) over the years, ending sometime in the 70's. The shop class made him new paddles as needed, even drilling holes in them to reduce air resistance. He prided himself on lifting football players off the ground and hopefullymaking them cry. (He was especially proud of that because he had polio as a boy, so had physical disabilities, including a pronounced limp due to one leg being 5 inches shorter and the foot significantly smaller, which got him exempted from WWII service) He only paddled the boys, as the teachers paddled girls.Really weird was when I was a 911 operator, one cop I worked with noticed my last name and asked if I was related to him. When I told him yes, he responded "Your grandpa paddled me! But I deserved it. And now I'm a cop.. so I guess it worked."

7:01 It might surprise Dave to know that CANING wasn't made illegal in Britain until around the year 2000. For government run schools corporal punishment became illegal in 1987. Privately run schools had to abandon corporal punishment in 1999 (for England and Wales), the year 2000 for Scotland, and 2003 in Northern Ireland. I was caned at school several times back in the 1970s while living in England. The canes used were approximately 1m long and about as big around as a regular walking stick. The strikes were not on the bottom but onto the naked skin at the small of the back. The process left welts which wept blood and then scabbed over in the following days. It didn't fully heal over for about 2-3 weeks.

About paddling in school, it's been 20+ years since I was in high school but it was allowed then but only if a parent signed a form saying they could. The principal and vice principal were the only ones who did the actual paddling and they made sure everyone saw the massive wooden paddle on display in their office. I don't know how often it was used but for some offenses I know they usually gave the student a choice of either the paddle or a call to the parents.

When I was in the 10th grade, I went to a private Southern Baptist school in Florida. They had a strict dress code and I couldn't find my belt that morning. I had to let a grown-ass man beat my ass with a paddle because I didn't have a belt on. Good ol' Christian values. No wonder I'm an atheist today. I actually almost had it happen a second time, but an unbelievably hot girl lent me a strap off her backpack to wear as a pseudo belt to escape punishment. So, you know, that rule was super important (hence the spankings) yet you could get by with a neon orange backpack strap as a "belt" apparently.

When I was a kid I lived in Memphis, Tennessee, and in 1st grade, we had a little bathroom in our classroom. It was essentially just a small box room in the corner with a toilet in it. There was a kid being a bit loud and energetic, you know, like what kids do at that age, and the teacher got upset. After giving a single warning, she walked over to the window where she had a pedestal for her decorated paddle. It was essentially a smaller cricket bat with holes throughout the whole thing for less resistance. She took him into the little bathroom and all you heard was.......*smack*.....*screaming and crying*......*smack*......*screaming and crying*......*smack*.......*crying*. Then they came out with this kid's face beat red with snot and tears running down his face. Teacher: "Have you learned your lesson?" Kid: *nods* then lays down back at is seat. Teacher: "Remember kids, if you're good and well behaved, I won't have to use this." Sooooooo, glad that was aloud. We really learned our lesson to not act our ages, it's better to lie if there's a chance to not be spanked, and adults are perfectly willing to hurt us if they're upset. What a great policy to help develop socially adjusted kids.

Taxing Cannabis at 20% would make SFA difference to the UK economy. If there were not untaxed Cannabis and all consumption was via sources that paid tax. It is easy to think you can solve the countries problems when they are not held up to scrutiny or if no one checks your figures. £2.6 Billion of Cannabis is consumed annually in the uk so a 20% tax is 520 Million which sounds like a lot until you learn that is around 1/2000th of all Taxes collected in the UK each year. So if this 520 million was collected for every £20 the Government has to distribute they would gain an extra penny. Not seeing how that would solve everything..

Within two seconds my mother flew across two rooms and smacked me in the mouth. And I'll tell you what, I never mouthed off again. And I also learned something. Manners. One of my 7th grade teachers hated me for some reason. My 9th grade year I made a deal with my drafting teacher to get a C average without doing any work for licks every day after his class. He didn't do it daily, only when I was loud or got in his nerves but he did give me the C at the end of each semester. I wasn't a good student in high school but was into sports. I look back now and see that they didn't do me any favors by making sure I had passing grades so I could play baseball. I did go on to be a better student in college though. Small schools in this state are already littered with the worst teachers so we were at a disadvantage going on to college.

They say we have lots of rights and freedoms here in Canada as well. We have the legal right to go out at night, but a lot of people won't because of fear. We have the right to use a bike for transportation, but few do as it will likely get stolen. We have freedom of speech, but say the wrong thing in front of the wrong person and you may get stabbed. Gen X here too. The paddle/spanking is the ONLY thing that worked on me in my younger years. In school (christian school), they were called "swats". I was swatted twice. Once for cheating on a quiz in 1982 (it was a quiz for a short story we read that was titled "Bill's Bill". The principal would call home about the punishment, and I remember sitting in the secretary's office and hearing the call. I was hoping my mom would say that she'd handle the punishment (because I was terrified that I was going to get swats). I was sweatin' my ass off, and I didn't get a reprieve of execution. The second time for getting in a fight with Scott L. , although we really didn't fight. The other boys were fighting, and we each pushed each other once but then stopped. We got the same punishment as the others though. Those are the 2 school punishments that always stayed with me! I was at some friends of mine (3 brothers) after church one night. One of them got spanked, and I saw what their dad used. It was the top wooden part of a chair from a kitchen table set. Their dad had etched "Mama's Helping Hand" into it. I did NOT get into trouble at that house!!

Smart mouth? That's a paddlin'. Definitely an option at my and every other school nearby growing up, aside from perhaps some private establishments that didn't. The potential for such punishment was known to all the parents for sure, and exceptions/requests against it for specific kids could and would be made, but that was pretty rare, in my experience. I can recall a particular coach and P. E. teacher that was generally hated when in elementary school that seemed to really get off on it, even had a particular student he would sometimes walk out of sight (any real corporal punishment was never done openly either) and pretend to paddle very loudly if the group was getting rowdy in his opinion. I'll be 38 on the 29th of this month for reference

I received a leather belt that scared ja more than anything. Then my mother would go cry on the porch. That was worse. ... but the best part was she had a studded leather belt hanging on a hook right next to the spanking belt. That, to me, was the nuclear deterrent. Funny part was she confessed, when I told her about that years later, it was a complete coincidence ... she had no intention of ever using that for discipline. ... but my snotty kid self sure through it was.😆

About the voting thing: I think it would be more effective to give someone smth for voting compared to punishing someone for not voting. Like give out smth at the voting booths that u can send in with ur tax and u get 20$ tax write off or smth similar.

I'm shocked to hear that parents have the right to spank their children when black mothers have lost custody of their children for a whole year after giving them a spanking and then the child telling on the mother or grandmother because they didn't want to be corrected. smhsmhsmh

We had corporal punishment in school. it may seem bad, but it wasn't because you had the choice and "swats" was the easy way out. Most children given the choice to choose between 3 quick swats or a full 3 days in ISS or after-school detention would just take the 3 swats. They cannot give you both punishments and the child has to choose. It was the same as getting a spanking at home or getting grounded for a month, you know what you're going to choose. I think it's a good exercise in decision-making for children.

About not voting, a large amount of Americans just couldn't care who becomes president and by forcing them to vote anyway, would cause them to likely just vote for whoever to get it over with and effect the election in a way people who do care wouldn't like

We got paddled in Louisiana back in the 80's. And if dad found out, we usually got spanked again when we got home. The parent did have the right to sign a form forbidding the practice though.

You are agreeing to the teachers being allowed to do that when you place your child in that school system and if this is the policy. If this policy is news to you then well that's the #1 issue with Americans, they do not read the fine print and then get upset with the outcome.

@@Kirinketsu_ I've read my kid's school policy and no where does it say they hit children. Also, by law, adults can not hit adults but our laws allow adults to hit children, weaker, more easily harmed, children. It's the dumbest shit.

@@DaniS398 Ever public school that I've heard about that still has this practice has it where it's allowed only if the parents sign a permission slip giving them permission to do so. If you don't sign the letter, they can't spank your child. And just because it's not illegal in your state, doesn't mean your child's school allows it anyway. So, you're getting angry at a problem you don't even have to worry about.

on weed and licenses is weird. im in washington state and we were one of the top to legalize weed (not the first) and it has been a boom of income but cause they have messed up the licenses and laws it has rough times. my neighbor just moved cause of the taxes she was paying in this county. she has moved to another county about 30-40 minutes away and she can grow more there and pay less taxes on the more she makes. its the same state so why. we arent in a city here so why the high taxes? this is a problem in all the states where weed can be grown. people that know nothing making rules about it.

I may be speaking out of turn cause I was born in 1982, I got a paddling when I was 9-10 so 1992 or so. That was the last time I got in trouble at school. And, my parents agreed with the principal when he told them what I did. My dad on the other hand, he had a belt. So when I messed up I got the belt until I wised up. My younger brother on the other hand took a few times even when I told him what was coming and where he messed up. We’re both fine grown adults now so I agree with it

I think a good butt paddling would go a long way with correcting the spoiled children that think they can get away with anything...its not going to kill them and it might just detour them from misbehaving in the future...just for the humiliation alone...I agree with spanking an unruly child...sometimes its the only alternative when they are out of control...it dosnt kill them and it certainly teaches them a hard lesson that being bad has consequences

Dictatorships use enforced voting to identify protesters and to arrest/detain/torture depending on the situation plus they are probably forced to a choice at the polling centers. I know that is the case in Syria, I think that happens in other dictatorships as well.
