One detail I've always found odd is that someone (maybe caesar?) describes Lanius as basically just a brute. He apparently doesn't care about the legion whatsoever, he is only loyal because he has ample opportunities to fight. But when you meet him, he's pretty reasonable, to the point that you can just convince him to retreat, by explaining that it would be for the benefit of the legion he supposedly doesn't care about.

@Satellaview1889

I think the game makes it clear that while Lanius doesn’t care about the Legion, he does care about winning. The Legion has sizable power that they can pull back with and preserve, if they stay and fight, they will undoubtedly be slaughtered. Lanius doesn’t care about the rest of the Legion, he cares about winning, and because of that, if you can convince him that he’s fighting a battle that would inevitably lead to his failure, he doesn’t fight. Because while he is physically imposing, he isn’t a brute, he’s a smart, capable man, who wins not simply by taking others lives, but by knowing how to strike in ways his enemies can’t stop. That’s the very reason the 2nd Battle is such a slaughter, because he figured out a weakness that the NCR didn’t think about. That’s why some people are told by others that Lanius was part of the Legion from birth. Because he’s as brutal as the Legion, and as intelligent as their best. The problem is that he isn’t part of the Legion, he’s just here because it’s convenient for him. So the Legion tells stories of a man so capable he rose through the ranks at an impossible pace, to make up for the fact that he represents the figure head of their ship, yet doesn’t care about the Legion’s beliefs or principles. He just cares about winning. You can’t talk in him down because he’s weak, you can talk him down because he fears being made weak, and having his strength, the one thing he really thinks he has, lost in a way that would shatter his image. Or I don’t know, maybe I’m just making stuff up.

Josh Sawyer, confirmed that Lanius' face lacks scars due to engine limitations. Lanius doesn't so much surrender "because of Words", but rather sees logic in the Courier's words: The Legion only just secured the Far East of their vast empire and it was not a quick campaign, securing the Mojave AND pushing further into California after two costly battles at the Hoover Dam would leave the Legion stretched thin making it entirely possible for the Far East of the Legion to rise up in retaliation. Lanius understands both the importance of maintaining the Cohesion of the Legion and maintaining stable logistics for the Legion as its Senior Field Commander; thus he backs down realizing the folly of rushing into the Mojave and California on such short notice but promises to return in time to finish what he and Caesar began.
@dylanmorgan2752

There were definitely parts of Lanius’ story embellished out of proportion such as him being a completely barbaric animalistic brute. I’m sure he had a cruel streak but you couldn’t rise up in the legion so fast without at least having enough sense and logic to know when not to die in a Pyrrhic fashion when bigger victories can be obtained later.

According to Joshua Graham, after killing Ceaser (Edward Sallow) that only 'Ceaser can lead the Legion'. While Lanius can lead the Legion, he wouldn't last. Brutality can only carry you so far, and without support from cities like Vegas... Lanius would have a Civil War or insurrection on his hands.

I don’t think he is an actor but just a normal member of the legion and Caesar has mystified his origin to making a living myth, similar to how Roman emperor would try to claim their were descendants of Emperors, gods or saint, or that were part of a prophecy or were part of a miracle Like emperor Basil I who claim descend for Constantine, that the Bulgarian Khan told him as a kid he will become a great ruler one day and that a priest was visited by an angel so he would give shelter to young Basil when he was homeless in Constantinople, but in reality he was a very charismatic wrestler that became very popular, became friends with the emperor, convinced him to named him co-emperor to help him rule and then killing him and took the empire I wouldn’t be surprised he was just a kid that was raised by the legion and rose through the ranks like a normal legionary

Lol, this is the most lefty comment I've ever heard. Lanius is 7 feet tall, how many 7 feet men of massive frame in your life do you know? What's more likely is that Casear created the myth around Lanius himself intentionally to be more "legendary", he's a literal representation of Mars on earth to the legion, even Casear obscures his own history to make him see more mythic. Lanius as a character is a brute first and foremost, he shows no mercy especially not to failure and will lash out in rage when he deems necessary I.e cutting the traders brahmin in half for getting in his way, decimating the legion for underperfoming, making human sacrifices to Mars before the hoover damm. But he's also known for being an exceptional commander who has never lost a singe battle and has a great mind for warfare, deeply understands logistics, and is very eloquent in his speech despite being a characterised as a brute. Also, the legion don't need to "buy into their own hype" when they're the most prosperous faction in the region , assimilated 87th tribes in warfare, without the courier's intervention they beat the NCR with ease, the same NCR who can barely achieve anything themselves and solely rely on you the player character to remotely get themselves a chance of winning. At least understand the game before you start inserting your political agenda into things.

In my opinion I think this scene would be better: if you didn’t destroy Caesar in the fort, you would have to fight him and Lanius. However you’re able to use a speech check against Caesar. Now if you killed Caesar in the fort before the final battle, obviously only Lanius will talk to you but speech checks cannot be used against him. He would want to fight you right away.
