The so-called “Baghdad battery” is believed to be from the Sassanian Era, roughly 224 - 651 AD. The jar was found in Khujut Rabu just outside Baghdad and is composed of a clay jar with a stopper made of asphalt. Sticking through the asphalt is an iron rod surrounded by a copper cylinder. The so-called “Baghdad battery” is not really a battery at all. We know this because it bears a very close resemblance to objects with an identifiable purpose found by a team of archaeologists from the University of Michigan in 1930 at the site of Seleukia, not far from Baghdad. The objects found at Seleukia look almost just like the so-called “Baghdad battery,” but we know they were, in fact, used to hold papyrus scrolls because they all contained remnants of papyrus scrolls when they were excavated. The scroll-holders from Seleukia consist of a metal rod that the scroll could be wrapped around and a tube inside a ceramic pot that the scroll to be slid inside for protection. Most likely, the so-called “Baghdad battery” is just a scroll container. The scroll was meant to be wrapped around the iron rod, slid inside the copper tube, and then slipped inside the ceramic container, which could then be sealed to protect the scroll inside. The acidic residue on the inside of the container most likely comes from the papyrus or parchment of the scroll that the pot once contained, since papyrus and parchment are both slightly acidic. Eventually, the scroll decomposed, leaving the acidic residue behind.

Also, there is no evidence of anything being electroplated, no evidence of ancient lightbulbs, no thin copper or tin wires. What good is a battery if you don't have wires? Now, if they could produce high voltage, like +1000 V, ancient people could torture criminals. That would be useful.

Hey there, Archaeology/anthropology graduate student here that specializes in South Asia and adjacent areas, including the Middle East. I just wanted to say that this is an excellent refutation of the notion that this was some kind of battery. Also, both of your proposed uses are entirely plausible. I’m not sure if this is the case in Iran, but in South Asia, there is an ancient medical tradition that includes the belief that copper includes properties that are good for the body. In 2021, there are even stores with special copper vessels that are specifically made so that you keep water in them and it gets that metallic “coppery” taste. Since this practice is also mentioned in texts dating back 2000+ years, it is very possible that Iran had a similar beliefs around that time too. So your random guess is actually seriously plausible, especially considering the relatedness of South Asian and Iranian cultures and the vast information exchange networks across Southern Eurasia at the time. Also, the stuff that ancient people in Southern Eurasia were actually making was cool enough for us to not have to make shit up. They were experimenting with clays, minerals and metals to make new types of synthetic objects (mostly for making things like ornaments). Some of these were ceramics by engineering definitions (i.e. sintered composites), which means that they were able to achieve temperatures high enough to induce a phase change. Also, during the 2nd-1st millennia BCE they developed how to make glass. They were also processing raw materials to make glues and lots of other things. All of this is many orders of magnitude more impressive than a bunch of useless pot batteries put in series to barely light an LED. Of course all of our tech is more impressive now, we have 2000+ years of accumulated knowledge and 7 billion people that can dedicate their entire existence to working out tiny problems in science. Thanks for the awesome vids!

I remember on MythBusters that they found out the battery could be used for electroplating. They then noted that the artifact in the form they were found was actually missing the terminal and couldn't work if it was in the form it was found. They then speculated the terminals were lost before the battery got buried and preserved. I'm quite sure that's not how it works, but to be fair to them, they specialized in special effects, engineering, and science, not archeology.
