I really wish the games never went full 3D. I'll always love these old style models.

It's impressive that this game was made for the psp. The little animated scenes in between give it an extra sense of quality.

i LOVE this graphic style, reminds me of FF Tactics or Grandia 2 and that whole era of jrpgs i grew up with.

Great to see the positive review! As a longtime fan of the ‘Trails’ series, I’ve been really looking forward to this game. Happy they rereleased it in the West, even though it might feel a few steps backwards from the ‘Trails of Cold Steel’ series. I preordered a physical copy of ’Trails of Zero’ and it was supposed to release tomorrow. My supplier e-mailed me this afternoon though that the release was delayed by two weeks. The new release date is October 14th. More time for my ever increasing backlog, I guess.😅

This duology is definitely my favorite in the series. The story was fantastic. You can’t really view this entry on its own. Trails To Azure is a must play as well

Copy gets here on Monday...still on Trails FC though, so can't wait to eventually get to this. Love that the series is getting even more exposure from this game than normal.

The thing I've realized about Trails that no one really mentions is the gameplay is 90% about going and talking to all the NPCs over and over. There's a main story and quest but you'll only move that along incrementally before going and talking to all the NPCs again. You don't have to of course, but that's where most of the script is

This is my favorite JRPG ever, I’ve played all of them, including fan translated Kuro. This series is magnum opus of Jrpg genre. Also, this is first of two games, and this game is more like a prologue and first half. It expands far more in second part

I grew up loving and playing as many Rpgs as I could. Now in my 40s, I just don't have the patience for them. Still play one every couple years or so, but nowadays, I've gone back to my old roots of playing shoot em ups, beat em ups and platformers. Games I can play for a bit or as much as I want and move on. Still have a soft spot for Rpgs, just seems playing for 80+ hours is so daunting.

It's great to see all these JRPs get a release outside of Japan. Hope to see more in the near future. I personally would like to see Skies Of Arcadia get a multiplatform release. Will this ever happen? l hope so.

I have the 1st Trails of the Sky game on the PSP and that game didn’t quite grab me when I first played it, but Trails from Zero is a whole other beast. I am definitely interested in the rest of the Trails series now.

always good to see more turned based rpgs even it's a remake or port. we have too many action rpgs now days. Definitely hoping to see the Skies trilogy on switch, great place for it.

I can't handle all these RPGs coming out for the Switch. Trials of Zero, Crisis Core Reunion, P5R, NieR Automata, Star Ocean 6 and Valkyrie Elysium. And I only just came to the end of Torna: The Golden Country for Xenoblade 2, with a total playtime of 185 hours... And I STILL haven't started Xenoblade 3. God help me (not upset though)

We still need Cold Steel 1 and 2 on Switch.

Played the japanese version on PC with the Geofront english translation patch a couple years ago. Awesome game. The lack of english voice over sucks though.

this is how games should've looked all through the 90s. enhanced 2d with embellished effects, not the low polygon attempts at 3D. Despite the fact I grew up in that era and love many of those early 3D titles, I still think it was too soon for a jump to 3D.

There is a spoiler about 00:50 seconds in concerning character development! Been playing this game for 9 hours and still haven't learned that! So far would recommend this game. Love the channel but my advice is to try not to have spoilers even if they seem inconsequential, at least a warning would be nice. Thanks!

This Falcom game might do for me on the Switch what Legend of Heroes: Tear of Vermillion did for me on the PSP - a decent story to play through every night in bed after hard days at work. I’m certainly grateful for a physical version being available as well.

Really great review. Only element I disagree with is the suggestion at the end that this game is a good place to start the series. It really isn't tbh, but I appreciate the switch has limited entries.

What I just don't get is this: Why in the world won't they release Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 for the Switch? They released 3 and 4, but won't release 1 and 2? What's the deal here? For someone like me who has never had a Playstation and probably never will have one, this is hard to swallow. I just wish they would release the first two, so I could at least have this part of the Legend of Heroes series completely.

Nevermind the japan exclusive jrpgs, it's great that we're finally getting the jrpgs that were actually localised but stayed in the US for some god damn reason, which was even more galling at the time

Just finished trails of cold steel 1, one of the best jrpgs I’ve played. Have been looking forward to this and a few other legend of heroes trails games coming out in the months to come. Keep up the good work with all the content you guys put out!

Im playing the psp version right now, didnt know it has a New port. I've played the first trails in the sky long time ago but not SC and third. I've downloaded zero and the sequel at same time and thinking to play the rest of sky afterwards.

Can anyone say if this has like a backstory option in the start screen? The kinda thing that does a recap of the sky trilogy?

I think I got halfway through Trails in the Sky, the first of the many games in the series. It’s wicked good, I just get distracted easily. For some reason the games you want to start with aren’t on the Switch, though. I don’t get it.

Not sure what to think of the Trails series... But JelloApocalypse made it seem fun

It would he nice to play when/if gamestop EVER fulfills my preorder. I should have had it 9/27 buy they still haven't gotten it. I could already had it by now though BB/Ebay/Amazon. I just got Nier Automata so that will tide me over bit can't wait to play this eventually.

Lack of english dub is kinda not worth the price imo, God Eater 2 RB got dubs over the original japanese PSP version while this game is not

I feel like all of those would be better with a solid action combat system, and I mean solid, not like on the mana series or anything we have seen so far.

I think this game is a Goat. It really is great. It's up there with Xenogears and Suikoden 2.

I still find it weird you can buy 4 and 5 of the cold steel series (basically arc 3 I believe of the legend of heros massive story) it good now you can at least play game one of this massive series.

I'm buying this game but not at full price. I'll gladly wait for a sale.

While I am not a super fan of JRPGs (thankfully), I do like the artstyle presented in this game. I know I won't be grabbing this any time soon but it looks like a title that I may revisit if my backlog ever permits or I'm in desperate need of a time killing RPG. As always, BIG shoutout to Azdin.

Honestly, I feel like this review somewhat undersells this game. The story of the Crossbell arc is actually "of a high standard", it's just that Trails from Zero is merely the first part of a two part arc, so it's no wonder why the plot might seem a tad underwhelming. But play it in concert with Azure and the rest of the series and with a bit of patience, the quality of the story shines through. Even Zero alone I would consider a good story (though do note that I did play the Sky trilogy beforehand, so that could have colored my perception given how connected the games are). Also, on the gameplay side of things I actually quite liked how there were no quest markers. I might be more of an old school gamer, but I personally had no trouble tracking quests down. Given how much time the game gives you to get acquainted with the layout of Crossbell it's actually rather easy to track quests down given only the information in the detective notebook. It's kind of like The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind in that regard. And reporting quests wasn't really that annoying either. I just completed all the quests first and then reported all of them when I returned to the SSS Building. I mean, if we're being real, the place you will most frequently spend Mira in the game; the weapon shop, is literally right next to the SSS building. The farthest you'll have to go after that, the upgrade shop, is still within city limits and is used relatively infrequently. Speaking of which, I would HIGHLY recommend playing the Sky trilogy before playing this game. Most of the time, when people ask if you need to play previous entries of a series to understand the later entries, the answer is no. But when it comes to Trails, that answer is always YES. There are many plot points that at the least will be understood better with experience with the prior games and at the most are almost incoherent without prior knowledge. It is very rewarding to go through the series in order. Though if you choose to ignore this advice and play Zero (or Cold Steel 1/3) first, the hey, as long as it gets you into this great series. Just make sure to go back to previous games, and maybe replay the ones you've played to catch onto some references you've missed.

I'd only suggest buying if it if you really really like JRPGs, or if you liked Trails in the Sky series, or Trails of Cold Steel series.

Its unfortunate to hear the story isn’t very good. I’ve had my eye on the trails series for a while, and have heard this is a good jumping on point, yet I also heard that this game and it’s direct sequel are the two best in the series, and from what you described and showcased in the video, the games just seem kind of meh? If the story was immaculate like most people say I’d probably go for it, but I think I’ll just pass on this series as a whole then sadly.
