Well I don't know whether if u will see this reply but I was from band once. I play the clarinet & I did play this song before for my SYF! Did saw how the percussionist played their instrument also. I believe that kid is trying to make the gong sound fade away slowly that's why he is doing that action. Well, surely he has a purpose in doing that. But not sure whether the answer I gave was correct haha
