Game #118 at the marathon. Live run of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for Super NES. This is a really impressive run considering it was done at a marathon. Cyghfer delivers as always.

Released in April 1992, A Link to the Past was the third game in the Zelda series and the only one to be made for Super Nintendo. Link goes on a quest that spans two worlds in an effort to restore the seal of the 7 wise men, recently broken by the mysterious wizard Agahnim. The game was re-released for GBA in December 2002, featuring faster text scrolling, Link screaming, a redone Ice Palace puzzle, and a link with the included game, "The Four Swords". For those who stumble across these videos, a speed run is a video of a person or persons, completing a game as fast as possible using any means possible. This can include glitches, abusing in-game mechanics and skipping items or even playing events out of sequence.

TAS (Tool Assisted Speedrun) essentially works by allowing you to pause the game and move frame by frame to get frame perfect button presses or other events.

Only PAL games have 50Hz. US and JP games are both NTSC and running at 60Hz. The reason why JP version are used is because the text is faster and there are more timesaving glitches in JP.

If you leave a dungeon and come back inside, don't the hearts and magic jar locations reset themselves? So in the last dungeon when he ran out of magic, shouldn't he just have left the dungeon and come back instead of flying to that tree?

I didn't know there were so many tricks you could do in this game... My jaw dropped when I saw him use the hammer while running with boots, and many times before that when he succeeded with the bomb jumps. Almost makes me want to try them all, but I can't... My SNES is at my parents' house and I'm faaaaaar away from home. Do the tricks work on an emulated version as well? Do they work on the non-Japanese versions?

You use an emulator to slow the game down to a frame by frame basis, allowing for perfect input. When making a TAS, it's not really about playing the game: it's about figuring out the perfect input sequence that finishes the game in the shortest amount of time. There is a TAS of Super Mario 64 that was released semi-recently that took 5 years to make, for instance.
