the fact that tony hawk helped christian, possibly his biggest rival of all time, get out of prison, is a prime example of why he's the hawk

He really is an example of how to live your life whether you skate or not. He caught unimaginable and unjustified amounts of shit but he stayed cool, stayed classy, and won in the end.... all these "core" guys would be irrelevant without Tony Hawk. It took some time but eventually these second and third rate guys *had* to respect him.

The 80's was such a great time to skate. It was underground, but these guys were rock stars that were ours. No one outside of skateboarding knew who they were, but they were as big as any rock star or movie star to us skaters. The decks and clothes were neons, pastels, and other bright colors, and where style was just as important as technical skills. It went hand in hand with the 80's punk/alternative scene too. Those bands were huge to us, but they weren't widely known just like Hawk and Hosoi. That was the 80's.

Christian did a demo in '88 in SLC, I was around 14. He did a morning demo at a local skate shop, and then a demo at our local Raging Waters. Not many people at the early demo, so my friends and I were able to skate with him in the parking lot for about an hour then we saw him at the Raging Waters demo and he saw us remembering who we were from earlier and stoked us with t-shirts and stickers. Great dude.

Amazing show..so glad Christian got off that crap..I was on ice hard from 2016 to 2019...ball a day habit! Selling it running around all hours a day in Florida..true story I swear to God I watched Christians doc rising sun and I'll never forget it..I'm at work smoking meth in the work bathroom every 20 minutes and I was so done...I was a shell of a man..I was like Im going to watch this Hosoi doc and see if I can get some inspiration to stop..Christian said 4 words that did it..there is no peace! I felt that so hard..I started crying at work..He was right there was NO PEACE with that crap just chaos...I went home and took a couple balls and got one of those 30 day pill organizers and I divided it all up...until at the end I was doing tiny tiny amounts and I got off! Starbucks expresso and pre-workout really helped in the end but I got clean and I'm doing great today..Christian's doc was the very start and I credit him with saving my life indirectly..I swear it's a true story..Thank you Christian for giving me the wisdom to change what I could..I swear my thought was..this guy was a GOD in the skateworld and had to go do 4 years in prison..I thought that had to be the roughest sht ever..I'm free..no trouble with the law..If he can get clean and deal with prison and being away from skating I can do it to..I remember thinking what a weak man I am if I can't do this...again thinking about Holmes going thru what he did...it's crazy that a doc about your fallen hero can be more powerful than an intervention or all the friends I lost...If you read any of this Christian, thank you so much brother!!!!

I remember my Dad always talking about Christian Hosoi when I was a kid, he would tell me how innovative and inspiring Hosoi was to the big air scene.. really cool seeing these legends talk about the times my dad always talked about. I totally get why Hosoi is and will always be his favorite skater, what a cool dude. I got Dad a Hosoi reprint Hammerhead deck for christmas this year and he told me it made him want to cry and that it was his favorite gift he'd ever been given. Thank you guys for everything you've done for the sport and Christian Hosoi, thank you for allowing me to share something special with my dad even after all these years. Skateboarding is for LIFE.

If someone would’ve told me in the 80’s I was going to discover this when I was 51 in 2023… Seeing living legends in the same room talking like this… I would’ve been like what?!?! 🙏🏽😎

Truly one of the greatest conversations ever about real Venice skateboarding legends. I was bnr in Venice grew watching & skateboarding in Venice when the palladium was still there. Much respect to Tony hawk, Christian Hosoi, & Jason Ellis. You guys are always an inspiration for generations of skateboarding to come. I would see these guys skating at the beach as a kid….. & I am still on inspired to my core to this day ….skateboarding is not crime…!! Ghostown!!!

I never took a side, I really appreciated both. I loved Hosoi’s style and power and I liked Hawk’s technical prowess. I just loved watching vert even though I only skated street. When launch ramps were all I skated then I was trying so hard to look like Hosoi doing a method! Loved that era

as a hair stylist, i love and appreciate the hair extension story! Christian visited the hair salon I work at a few years ago and it was like a celebrity walked in the door. He was so kind and gracious. Skate or die my friends! Until the wheels fall off!

I still remember all of this like it was this morning. It was an incredible place in time. And to watch the rival, I didn’t ever think it was arrival. I just went through the motions of what was being projected. But I think everyone knew, we were all going to get sick and tired of watching someone go back-and-forth on the ramp pulling great big areas with a lot of style. And in the end, the amount of tricks that Toni shared with us. That helped us progress in our skateboarding blew away the fact that Cristian could never ever give us any of that. Sadly, I think that pressure overwhelmed Christian to the point where he tried to disguise things with drugs. In my mind, I would have loved for Toni and Christian to hang out at Tony’s and just passed tricks back-and-forth so they both could’ve progressed together. Because when the X game started and there was no Christian, skateboarding was missing something. And it would’ve changed the direction that skateboarding went. If there was only something besides this stupid rival. It can’t be fixed now. But when you hear this conversation, it’s clear. You can see it, you can feel it, and we can’t change it and that sucks. But thank God we all got to go through it. And think God in the end Christian chose God and fixed everything. Now entertainment value alone, how lucky we all are to hear this story. Helmets off to you too. Thank you. You are both #OfTheEpic

On a sidenote. I have the best Mike McGill station wagon disaster ever. And the best part is, he still ended up to be a hero for how cool he was by the way he handled that situation and by what he was doing to help his family. And that makes Mike McGill the most amazing person on planet earth. True story. Really happened. You might ask me what is the story? And I might tell you. Then again, you probably won’t even notice this comment. #NowThatsComedy.

Jason said it right!! God has never spoken to me and I'm not into what your in to, but he's happy to see Christian where he is at in his life today. I was regions in my earlier days. I'm 48 today. I was religious up till I was 39-40. I don't knock anyone's religion or any religion, well I'm on the fence with scientology but I am who I am because I chose to be who I am because of life experiences and stuff. If religion has made Christian who he is today, I'm happy for him. live and let live!!!!!
