Tucked away in the tiny town of Bovina, NY in the Catskill Mountains is Russell’s General Store: a quaint small general store with one of New York’s best bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches. Antonio, a former executive chef of Quality Bistro in NYC, moved up to Bovina during the pandemic to cook at Russell’s at the urging of friends who left the city to start anew in Bovina. Along with pie-maker Maggie, the two run the food program at Russell’s General Store, which also stocks classic and unexpected dry goods.

Wow…. This is pretty wild. Antonio, Chef Mora, was the first real chef I ever worked under when I got out of college and moved back up north to the city and got a job at Quality Meats. I learned more working under him and his sous chefs than almost any job I’ve had since. I remember the way he’d get when he’d be working on the line and get into it, frustrated at times cuz service could be pretty stressful sometimes (and to be honest I wasn’t the best employee at that point in my life at all), but he had so much grace and attention to the dishes he’d touch and finish plating. I knew he was extremely talented but could tell something about it wasn’t feeding his soul day to day; I am beyond proud to call him a role model and a mentor and to see where he’s at today. It gives me hope. And I’m so glad to have met him. Bless you, Chef!

You know I've been feeling the same way!!! I'm from Los Angeles, California living near Portland, Oregon. I have cooked in 3 Michelin star restaurants, and fine dining the rest. During the lockdown, I began to examine my life and focus. I am also a full time single parent. Not having to work 80 hours a week away from my children changed me. I no longer want to chase the dream of food critics, and stars. I just want to be happy and close to my family!! We have started a family business selling pizza from home! I don't earn the money I used to, but I'm happier than I ever have been in all my life!!!

The shelves of the store are beautifully stocked, almost like an art wall. This was an interesting video. While it's all about this small, remote town and it's thriving general store, I'm curious how many "locals" shop there for everyday items and how visitors coming from out of town might benefit any other local business?

Grew up in northern NH. Chased dreams in Boston and NYC, moved “back north” 20 years ago and I’m here to tell you, there’s nothing that beats small-town New England life in the 21st century. All the classic small town positives, coupled with the awareness and availability of “big city” cuisine/culture (usually being available within the “confines” of a day trip). Plus nature LOL

Places like these are normally in the middle of a bunch of farm land. You'll have a dozen or so families farming and a place like this will be on the main road in/out of town. Families will make a long run for groceries once a week or every other week out to "town" what ever biggest city is near them. These places get most of their business from guys heading to/from work who stop for something to eat or pick up a few things they might need. The rent on the building is next to nothing because of location and people become pretty loyal and may stop EVERY day for food or items. At least that's how it is in Missouri corn land where my wife's family come from. They will say "you wanna go down and get something to eat?" and since there is only one place in town they know what they mean.

My grandma lives in a small town. The people who live there go and eat at the local restaurants whenever they can. They know that it's the only way to keep those little places alive

I grew up in small farm towns in NY state and even I've never heard of Bovina until now. But it's right near Oneonta which I have heard of and been to.
